Sport has always been a huge part of the Grey College culture and the school has some of the best sporting facilities in South Africa. Grey College continues its endeavor to improve the current cricket structures, as well as developing the remarkable cricket talent at the school.
With the establishment of the Grey College Cricket Institute, we aim to raise the bar again and set new standards when it comes schoolboy cricket coaching.
Phase 1 of the development started in 2016 when this was still part of the old shooting range. We developed the first 12 grass strips and made sure these were of the highest quality.
Phase 2 of the net development began towards the end of 2018. The first concrete was cast back in August 2019 and the first ball was only bowled in September 2021 due to Covid restrictions. The design of the roof makes this building unique by allowing the natural flow of air straight through the building.
Not only did we want a facility or a building that was really impressive from the outside, but we also aimed to establish a facility with a combination of features not seen before. All in all, a world class facility every young aspiring cricketer would feel proud of.
The Grey College Cricket Institute or GCCI consists of the Indoor Cricket Centre with 6 lanes, which can convert into 7 skills nets.
- 3 Cricket ovals right next to the indoor centre.
- A turf net complex which consists of 18 grass or turf nets.
- 21 artificial or concrete nets.
Inside the Indoor Centre you will find:
- The best quality lighting. At the batting area it goes up to 1100 Lux.
- Top quality flooring where we can control the pace of the ball on the batting surfaces and the silica sand allows them to take turn, which again replicates a normal cricket pitch.
- 40mm grass with rubber filling at the run-ups and landing areas.
- Best quality white netting with the roof net at a height of 4,5m for extra volume. Everything is retractable to allow one big practice area.
- The activation gym where basic strength and conditioning work are done by the cricket conditioning coach.
- An agility station for mobility work and agility drills.
- Coaches offices and the team analysis room on the top floor.
The indoor centre is also equipped with PitchVision Technology. This recording and analysis system has revolutionized the technical aspects of cricket and is something that is used by all the major cricketing institutions in the world. One of the features that sets the Grey College Cricket Institute aside from other cricket facilities, is the Mellins i-Style Training Centre. Here our young cricketers have their eyes tested regularly and various forms of eye training is done.
The main purpose of the Grey College Cricket Institute is to ensure that all Grey College cricketers, from under 9 level right up to the under 19’s and First team, have the best opportunity to reach their potential. Nothing should stop them from following in the footsteps of all the great cricketers this proud institution has produced over the years.
