Even though Holdsworth thought his work on this UK album was "rubbish." His accustic work on this album was awesome, even the small intro pieces he played.

I met Alan back in 2008. He was the kindest most down to earth musician you could ever meet. He was going to let me play his guitar but I couldn't because I am a lefty.
Don't be so bedazzled by the brilliant Holdsworth, that you overlook the real genius behind UK -- Eddie Jobson wrote or co-wrote ALL of UK's music and is one of the greatest ever rock keyboard players and composers. He should have received the same respect as Emerson or Wakeman IMHO. And he played with Zappa!
he is great here, i am assuming he wrote 30 years, to me that's his best on this album... but the holdsworth/bruford contributions are really built to last/evergreen... the songs i revisit the most are nevermore/mental.

Lucky enough to be exposed to quality arts since childhood, or later in life encounter (in person) somebody like mentor or teacher to point to certain things. I know plenty of non-musicians friends who I grew up with, who listened together with me to UK, Zappa, Vannelli, Yes, Jethro Tull, Return to Forever, Mahavishnu, Weather Report and so on... These were the same people who grew up being exposed to Chopin, Bach, Ravel, Mahler, Ogerman/Brecker, Stravinsky, Goldsmith, Williams, Herrmann and so on...
When good friends like these get together, good things happen. Holdsworth's solo at the end of this tune, shows that he could play sometimes at a slower velocity, and make it reach the bottom of your soul.

Its a strange lyrical content for such a dreamy and other worldly piece and my favorite UK composition btw. . From Wetton's point of view it seems to be about a night out drinking in Soho and ending with a touch of romance in the morning. Yes he did have a huge drinking problem- Not to detract from his immense talent and creativity, we all have our demons. But still somewhat strange lyrics.
According to Bruford's biography, he started his band and released Feels Good To Me before UK formed. After he and Holdsworth departed from UK and, as was stated before, Bill continued his band. Thanks to PMP for posting this amazing piece of music. Allan Holdsworth is tremendous as a player and a composer. Nevermore is an amazing piece of music. Did I mention it's amazing :-) It is though. I could write an essay on how brilliant I feel it is. Everybody put their best into it. Those harmonies Wetton sings are phenomenal. Jobson uses just the right timbre and texture to create just the right atmosphere. Bruford places the right grooves in the right places and what brilliance it was to play those Roto-toms to give that specific voice to the drum fills. Nobody else, ever had done that! And Holdsworth, from the phenomenal acoustic guitar opening (not Al DiMeola, not John McLaughlin, none has made the acoustic guitar sound so fluid) all the way to the crucial lead lines at the end of the song, it's just impeccable, passionate and cutting. It's an amazing piece of work. I first heard it back in the late 70's when it came out and it still stands alone as a pinnacle for progressive/jazz-rock/fusion music. I'm grateful that I have "an ear that can hear it."

I truly love music that continues to unfold and reveal artistry that went previously unnoticed, as the years go by. I'm being honest... in addition to being a musician for more than 30 years now, I'm also an audiophile and over the years have invested in high end equipment (because good music deserves to be heard on good equipment). Regardless of how good the listening equipment is, the music will always be heard differently on different equipment. Sometimes even cheap equipment can reveal sounds and frequencies that the better doesn't. In Nevermore, Holdsworth plays the lead line that John Wetton sings, simultaneously. For over 30 years I thought Holdsworth paralleled Wetton note for note, without variation (except for a drop off at the end of "When day is dawning...), but I've recently discovered a subtle "flourish" that he plays while Wetton is singing, at the end of "In windows..." that never distracts from the vocal. It's really low in the mix, but depending on how your system is EQ'd, or what headphones you're using, you can hear it, and it's beautiful, pure Holdsworth, something that most people have probably glossed over and never knew was there. That's good music by good musicians. Just because you've listened to it a hundred times don't think that you've heard everything there is to hear. That's why (among other reasons) I say it's an amazing piece of music. Peace.

This album is a perfect balancing act of jazz fusion chops artistry and prog rock romanticism, ten years after both genres were born. A beautiful captured moment in in the evolution of popular styles. A moment that passed quickly as the players drifted their separate ways to lees eclectic turf. A true gem of a record.
At some point way back in the day, I noticed that a fair percentage of the prog albums I owned had one thing in common, that was completely unintentional on my part: Bill Bruford, I never set out originally to buy records by bands for which he was the drummer, it just happened... ....the guy is just amazing, in _this_ especially, (...and there are not really enough words to describe the dual drums with Phil Collins in Genesis shows, _that's_ just a whole _other_ story :-) ) boggles the mind that this album isn't more well known, there really is some unparallelled virtuosity from everyone, start to finish, just phenomenal! Still sounds just as amazing to me now as when I first bought it at 16.

At a certain point I began searching out music where Bruford was the drummer, not just for him, but also knowing that his presence usually meant that the rest of the musicians were going to be great and that the music would be exceptional. Yes, his influence on the sound of Genesis, particularly on Cinema Show from Seconds Out, is superb. Interestingly, he didn't speak highly of his contribution to the band in his autobiography, but yes, I'll listen to that recording just to hear him playing on it, not that Phil isn't great too. Yes, the UK album is just a finely crafted musical vision that transcends rock or jazz. Virtual high five for your comments.

Not trying to take anything away from this incredible and beautiful song but this sounds a lot like some fusion I've heard - reminds me of Hiromi Uehara's more electronic songs
Ron - I was 20 in 1978 and started taking lessons from a session guitarist from Chicago - Bill Ruppert. Bill sat me down and asked how serious I was about the guitar as well as what I liked stylistically. He pulled out UK's album and asked if I had heard it. I said no. From the first 20 seconds of Nevermore - I was blown away. Bill had been on a pilgrimage to England to meet AH and was an incredible player himself. This tune - and AH's playing - changed my musical life forever.
I bought this album in the early 80's. Also grew up in Chicago like Peter. Had the chance to see Allan at the NAMM show in Chicago when I was in high school. I was already mesmerized by his playing after hearing him on Jon Luc Ponty and reading about him in Guitar Player magazine. In 1989 I moved to Southern California. A few years later I got the chance to see Allan do a clinic at Guitar Center in Santa Ana. Then around 2005 or so my son's guitar teacher told us he had an opportunity for all his students to go see Allan play in a small industrial park building in south Orange County. So we went and watched him tear it up there. Totally blown away. My son who was around 12, was like "Dad, I don't understand what he is playing but he is really good!". I was like "yeah, you won't see somebody like this again for a long time". Obviously very sad to see him leave us at the age of 70.
Maybe the best prog record ever.With a bit of fusion thrown in.So underrated.Short lived group. The second record w. different lineup was good, but this one was so visual.
This brings back such amazing memories. I was only about 16 or 17 when I heard this (late 70's) and I'd never heard music like it before. Allan changed my life, along with all the musicians on this amazing album.

My first vinyl copy got that grayish etch from how often I played it despite a perfectly balanced stylus arm. I fortunately had a reserve copy I played once to check for noise and once to put on reel-to-reel. Kept it unplayed after that. Legendary lineup.
I grew up listening to Yes, Return to Forever, Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and other 'prog rock' bands. Graduated HS in 1977. How in the heck have I never heard of this band?
I graduated in 1976 and my brother who is a year younger than me turned me on to this. He knew I was heavy into e l p so he felt I would like this and he was right.
Also a 1977 grad. I saw Bruford's name on the album, took a gamble with the last dollars in my pocket and bought it. It's my favorite album of all time. Better to be lucky than good.
A remarkable feat. It must pain Bruford and Jobson that Allan gets all the remarks here - but it should not. Jobson - in my opinion - sounds better here than any keyboardist ever did with Allan. His sounds and note selections; perfect. He does not make the mistake of trying to keep up with Allan's insane improvisational ideas - but instead - turns our heads with a different approach that more than compliments Allan - it elevates the entire composition. And Bruford? Also vastly beyond amazing. But what else can be said of the incomparable Mr Holdsworth? He is - without any doubt - the greatest player of any style on any instrument of the past 100years.

Nailed it, Fontsman. My guitar instructor (a Chicago session guitarist who only took advanced players as students)played this for me at my first lesson with him in 1979. I'd never heard of AH before that. I was blown off my chair. I remember having tears in my eyes both from awe and the sheer emotional content.
And extremely kind and humbling of the late, great Eddie Van Halen to support him. In the 70's, when everyone was asking Eddie about his technical wizardry he would cite Holdsworth as a huge influence. This brought the (then obscure) Holdsworth a legion of new fans and income.
Honestly, one of the greatest prog songs ever. And what an amazing album! I know, I'm stating the obvious, but sometimes it's good to remember how lucky we were, and we still are!

I got LP of this signed big J.W. on the back side. Bought in London back in 1997 then i took it to some JW gig probably in 1998 to have signature. Nevermore is etched in my mind forever. Keeps coming back in winter rainy days like today.
Allan was, is and will always be the greatest player, but what gets me the most was his tone. THE GREATEST GUITAR SOUND EVER. The lead at the end of this song is the best electric tone I've ever heard in my 64 years of playing, listening, following guitar. EVH, METHENY, GILMOUR, IOMMI, BLACKMORE, HENDRIX, DIMEOLA, GOVAN, VAI, ETC, all have great sound, but Allan's was just that much better.......its in the hands.

I never thought about how difficult it would have been for Eddie Jobson or Dave Stewart to trade of leads with Alan, I think they all composed this to perfection! Best band ever!
I never tried to copy him but man listening over and over it came out at times. Aside guitar I love spacey keys anytime! But yea his playing influenced my style for sure thank you sir for I shall always. remember.

Musically, there's more happening in these 8 minutes of brilliance than in the entire output of basically any contemporary 'artist' you care to mention...
This is a wonderful piece of playing but probably his most impressive playing on acoustic is on the track Diminished Responsibilty with Gordon Beck on piano. Especially the 'cadenza' section at just over the 1 minute mark.

Bought this in 78 when I was just 18. I'm enjoying and rediscovering every note.
Ron - I was 20 in 1978 and started taking lessons from a session guitarist from Chicago - Bill Ruppert. Bill sat me down and asked how serious I was about the guitar as well as what I liked stylistically. He pulled out UK's album and asked if I had heard it. I said no. From the first 20 seconds of Nevermore - I was blown away. Bill had been on a pilgrimage to England to meet AH and was an incredible player himself. This tune - and AH's playing - changed my musical life forever.

I bought this album in the early 80's. Also grew up in Chicago like Peter. Had the chance to see Allan at the NAMM show in Chicago when I was in high school. I was already mesmerized by his playing after hearing him on Jon Luc Ponty and reading about him in Guitar Player magazine. In 1989 I moved to Southern California. A few years later I got the chance to see Allan do a clinic at Guitar Center in Santa Ana. Then around 2005 or so my son's guitar teacher told us he had an opportunity for all his students to go see Allan play in a small industrial park building in south Orange County. So we went and watched him tear it up there. Totally blown away. My son who was around 12, was like "Dad, I don't understand what he is playing but he is really good!". I was like "yeah, you won't see somebody like this again for a long time". Obviously very sad to see him leave us at the age of 70.

This brings back such amazing memories. I was only about 16 or 17 when I heard this (late 70's) and I'd never heard music like it before. Allan changed my life, along with all the musicians on this amazing album.

My first vinyl copy got that grayish etch from how often I played it despite a perfectly balanced stylus arm. I fortunately had a reserve copy I played once to check for noise and once to put on reel-to-reel. Kept it unplayed after that. Legendary lineup.
I grew up listening to Yes, Return to Forever, Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and other 'prog rock' bands. Graduated HS in 1977.
How in the heck have I never heard of this band?
I graduated in 1976 and my brother who is a year younger than me turned me on to this. He knew I was heavy into e l p so he felt I would like this and he was right.
Also a 1977 grad. I saw Bruford's name on the album, took a gamble with the last dollars in my pocket and bought it. It's my favorite album of all time. Better to be lucky than good.
A remarkable feat. It must pain Bruford and Jobson that Allan gets all the remarks here - but it should not. Jobson - in my opinion - sounds better here than any keyboardist ever did with Allan. His sounds and note selections; perfect. He does not make the mistake of trying to keep up with Allan's insane improvisational ideas - but instead - turns our heads with a different approach that more than compliments Allan - it elevates the entire composition. And Bruford? Also vastly beyond amazing. But what else can be said of the incomparable Mr Holdsworth? He is - without any doubt - the greatest player of any style on any instrument of the past 100years.

Allan's incredible sign off to the end of the composition is unforgettable. The man was a titan, who through brilliance and force of will, broke away from the accepted constraints of the guitar.
Nailed it, Fontsman. My guitar instructor (a Chicago session guitarist who only took advanced players as students)played this for me at my first lesson with him in 1979. I'd never heard of AH before that. I was blown off my chair. I remember having tears in my eyes both from awe and the sheer emotional content.
And extremely kind and humbling of the late, great Eddie Van Halen to support him. In the 70's, when everyone was asking Eddie about his technical wizardry he would cite Holdsworth as a huge influence. This brought the (then obscure) Holdsworth a legion of new fans and income.

I got LP of this signed big J.W. on the back side. Bought in London back in 1997 then i took it to some JW gig probably in 1998 to have signature. Nevermore is etched in my mind forever. Keeps coming back in winter rainy days like today.

Allan was, is and will always be the greatest player, but what gets me the most was his tone. THE GREATEST GUITAR SOUND EVER. The lead at the end of this song is the best electric tone I've ever heard in my 64 years of playing, listening, following guitar. EVH, METHENY, GILMOUR, IOMMI, BLACKMORE, HENDRIX, DIMEOLA, GOVAN, VAI, ETC, all have great sound, but Allan's was just that much better.......its in the hands.

This was the album that introduced me to Allan Holdsworth’s playing after having seen him on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine way back in the fall of 1982. With that said I must say that I’m also impressed with John Wetton’s bass playing along with all the rest of course-

Musically, there's more happening in these 8 minutes of brilliance than in the entire output of basically any contemporary 'artist' you care to mention...
This is a wonderful piece of playing but probably his most impressive playing on acoustic is on the track Diminished Responsibilty with Gordon Beck on piano. Especially the 'cadenza' section at just over the 1 minute mark.
