I love how Jeremy can weave his unique humor into a safety lesson
They had to delay the airing of this segment because a train had hit a car at a level crossing in Lincolnshire and the families called it disrespectful.
If anything, it's a reminder of how stupid you have to be to jump the level crossing lights. I cross the East Coast Main Line near Stamford on the way to and from my parents' house. The high speed trains there cross that road at 120mph. If that hit my Vauxhall Astra there would not be a lot left.
How would this of been disrespectful?
Dylan Cotton
Exactly. I used to live there and it's very flat with many crossings that people take risks with. If anything, people need educating.
+amillwardmusic I think the real question here is why were you driving something as truly dreadful as a Vauxhaul Astra? Come on man, get a grip!
justsomeguytoyou
It was free >.

Ok, fair enough.
"Sir Robert Markson" XD
Wearing a hi-vis jacket won't save you in every situation, for instance a bullet train would require Kevlar.
😂
Trains can’t stop on a dime and what you need to do is avoid being hit by the train or hitting the train and not making the train see you
@@oliverweitkemper9679 wooooosh

i heard its a rare species of bird, called, the joke

Wait, it was meant to be a joke?
Watch out Gavin that snail will get you.

Jeremy Clarkson doing a fake safety video with multiple helmets and a HVJ... accompanied by slow-motion photography by Gavin? How could this video be any better?
+Gabriel Tiller feature HowToBasic?
It's not a "fake" safety video. The Top Gear style cocking about is what gets people to watch it, but the message is real. A few years ago, a train took out a car with two adults and three kids just a few miles from my home. Witnesses said the driver tried to slalom the barriers just like in this video. A whole family died. If it takes Jeremy Clarkson's sense of humor to get the message across, so be it.
I have no clue how i found your comment on an old top gear vid but you should do more supspace readings
Greystar2426
lmao hello. i’ve never encountered a fan outside of the comments on my actual videos before.
you mean sir robert markson?
I love how he was in a Reliant Robbin
What a dangerous thing to do.......that snail could have derailed that train.
Alan Macnaughton Technicians were there to make sure it don't.
If a car can't derail a train I don't think a snail will (common sense)
+KJ trains It was a sarcastic joke (common sense)
+KJ trains You're a smart one...
This was a Union shoot.
They used a stunt snail, Pat Smyth-Gorden. It worked on Ronin and The Transporter. Real pro.
I can't tell you how relieved I am that Jeremy has warned me about this. Now, I shall always wear two hard hats and a safety jacket when driving across level crossings. No train can harm me now.
did the snail survive?
Thats the big question on everyones minds....
I love the way this video is made, the way they mix the serious message with the humour is very clever.
Hmm , i wonder who did the slow mo for this vid ...

anyone who isn't British probably did. It's a fairly common expression over here.
Deep Man, Are you ambassador of the Britons?
Stephen White well for all you know, I might very well be! ;)
Yes, a lot of people did. Another 31 was used to push the first one, unpowered and unmanned, up to 85 mph, brake and leave it to coast into the car. That is the reason for the flashing "Brake" light near the snail on the other track, some distance up the line. It's also the reason for the ballast piled against the outer edges of the rails, to act as a brake by dragging on the car's wheels. All very carefully worked out by Network Rail, whose project this was.
Another very informative video from Sir Jeremy Clarkson!

1:33 oh, is that what happened... 😂 I watching British TV growing up is 100% responsible for my sense of humor.
As comical as this is intended to be, it gets the message across very well. This is an issue that is incredibly serious, and must not be taken lightly. Well done JC and the whole TG crew.
i hope that snail was ok :/
Don't worry, he was on the other side :)
vincent russo R.I.P snail
Cause of death: suffocated by gravel
As someone who is a bit of a train geek, I figured that the snail survived - the train runs on the left (as always in the UK) and the snail was on the right, and the train wasn't going the other way as the STOP sign (limit of shunt) was the wrong way
Unless the debris got it but it was too far along.
Anyone else see the face at 4:09 in the Renault?
Creepy 😅
To The Unknown Snail ...
I hope the snail didn't die. It would've been sad if it did, just like when people die in railroad crossings...
He wasn't wearing a high-visibility jacket OR a helmet. He was basically asking to die.
I think the idea is that making a joke of something makes it more memorable. Network Rail staged the collision for a safety ad they were making, but it hardly got shown because it was considered "too graphic". Top Gear giving it the humorous treatment and sending up the patronising safety film genre along with all sorts of motoring prejudices has actually reached, and been noticed by, a much bigger audience.
@danlefou Thanks for the update! I did notice the other locomotive in the distance but though it might have been there in the event the lead engine derailed. When they do demonstrations like this in the U.S. (i.e. "Operation Lifesaver') they do it with a live locomotive and crew (hitting an automobile is such a "non-event" you don't even feel it in the cab.) I used to own a rail construction company, hence my interest dressing and re-regulating the ballast.
I'm sure that will buff out
Love it! When's this coming to UA-cam in high-def?
THAT'S TOAST!!! LOL!!! ROFL!!! Laws of physics. Train vs car. Train wins every time.
where's gavin's nose?
It's the train.
Some British crossings do have double gates, but I think they are mainly on very busy roads. The problem with those is that they can trap vehicles which stall or break down on the crossing.
RIP snail
some countries have moved on from diesel trains,to electric bullet trains. those things travel at 300 mph. getting hit by one of those I'll certainly kill u. especially if it hits the gas tank
and I live in U.S, the only way to get a high visibility jacket is to jump a construction worker and jack his jacket
In most countries high speed lines do not have level crossings meaning there is no risk of being hit at 320 km/h. Still the speed of the train doesn't matter the people in the car always die.
you know bbc started uploading HD clips since 2012 or 2013 right?
don't let elders drive
GAVINO FREE!
I couldn't stop it when he said "Britain's old people have found a new way to get their kicks" :')
Gavin (slomo guys/achievement hunter) filmed this :)
Don't buy a Renault Espace.
Brilliant. You get SO much more attention (the comments here prove as much IMO) by doing it this way instead of going all authoritative and going:"Don't do this!". THIS has so much more impact; its ingenious.
You may see it's not really necessary to wear TWO safety helmets but consider this:....IF IT SAVES ONE LIFE......!!!!! and on that bombshell....
how about no?
see = say …jeez.
poor snail :(
Be thankful for the ads, they are what keep youtube FREE!
Gavin worked on this :)
That poor snail D:
The RSPCA will have much to say about this.
DemonOnCrack crushed by gravel and parts of a car
To avoid being impaled on the buffers or coupler, which focus all the locomotive's initial kinetic energy into a relatively small area, a car would have be all roll cage, i.e. built like, and as heavy as, a tank. Then, at this sort of speed, the lateral acceleration would probably be fatal.
Well the buffers can actually retract a few cm
I'm pretty sure a Toyota Hilux has a 10,000,000-star safety rating, lets put that in the renaults position instead
What a waste. African kids could have eaten that car!
True, but they could always re-upload it in higher quality now. It might be a while yet before the H.265 codec begins to see widespread use on video streaming sites like this (a few years I would predict), but hopefully the benefits are as great as I've been reading that they will be.
You have my deepest sympathy. I understand the frustration you feel - I was bullied at school and have had a stroke which often makes speaking difficult - and I assure you that you are not worthless. Nobody is, but in all honesty, how does swearing and making offensive generalisations about whole nations help your case?
Yes, many have noticed the powered locomotive used to push the unpowered, unmanned one up to speed and release it to coast into the car.
"Well Doc, it's destroyed. Just like you wanted"
The ballast flying about was extra, piled up against the outer edges of the rails to act as a brake on the car, as the loco was unmanned and unpowered. The car, impaled on the coupling and buffers, didn't even touch the rails, let alone the underlying ballast. Some maintenance was done a few weeks later, but in any case the line was due to close soon. The loco stopped in about the same distance as it would have done with power and a train in tow.
I'm a traindriver and everytime someone tries to rush over the tracks I get scared, thinking I might kill someone today. It takes km for us to stop the train, you have no chance if you get stuck.
bbc started uploading hd clips in 2012 or 2013
Videos of similar collisions in America show almost identical damage to the cars, At 60 mph plus, the car gets flattened - wherever it happens. Impact speed is what matters, not the shape or weight of the train.
Don't forget that all vehicles in a train have brakes, which work almost simultaneously. Average axle load determines stopping distance, and the locomotive or power car, usually much the heaviest vehicle, is actually slowed by the rest of the train. In the UK, HST units are not allowed to run at their cruise speed of 125 mph with less than four trailer cars to contribute to the braking. American trains are much longer and heavier than most countries', but braking distances are very similar.
I once read in a car magazine that there was a guy who had his car get hit by a train and not only did he survive it (and escaped the accident with only a few scrapes and bruises), his car was actually still drivable after the crash.
Network Rail was making a 30-second safety film with an old car and one of its clapped-out maintenance locos. Top Gear was invited along to shoot extra footage and do a comic take, so they got it almost for free. The track was due to close soon, and the ballast seen flying was specially piled against the outsides of the rails to brake the unmanned loco by dragging on the car's wheels. The line was back in use the next day.
Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire. Line now closed and lifted.
lol I had no idea this show was actually hilarious. I always just assumed it was a generic car show but I'm not even into cars and I love it.
I see that, haha. It's great. Or was great, I guess.
Yes, it was one of NR's maintenance fleet, used for spares until scrapped a couple of years later. Special black paint job for this sequence.
@trainmaster909. The car would never be snapped in 2 because the inertia of the car is just not enough to resist simply being pushed sideways along with the train
You don't pay to upload videos in high definition. If you look at the upload date of this video, it was 2008. HD Streaming wasn't available then. Progressively over the years, better quality has been introduced. And soon with the release of the codec H.265 as opposed tot he current format of H.264, 4K streaming will become available to the masses!
Hibaldstow, near Scawby in Lincolnshire. Line now closed and lifted.
For a people who don't know Top Gear, will say this is a fake or bad joke.
Well we all know this is just something Jeremy wants to try and it's awesome!
anyway far more than this is waiting for you in more top gear video.
There have been a few accidents, such as that at Canton, Michigan, in which the train had no time to brake and hit a Ford Fusion at 61 mph, killing the five occupants. The damage to the car was practically identical to this - no greater, no less. Other cars hit by trains at similar speeds, braking or not, show similar damage. It depends almost entirely on the impact velocity. This car was close to absorbing as much of the train's kinetic energy as it could without being welded to the track.
No. The logo ahead of the message on the side of the loco was Network Rail's.
I never saw the actual ad, because I don't go to the cinema or watch much on ITV, but going by other ads in the campaign, it would have come out rather stark. Just the setting, possibly the snail, the impact and the slogan. Even the Top Gear spoof was postponed twice because it coincided with actual crashes on crossings.
That man wasn't getting his jollies, he was being a hero and trying to destroy a Reliant Robin.
Gavins Camera work is outstanding
Hello there, British rail fan here. This is not quite correct. The train will blast the horn and try to stop but trains take loads of football pitches in length to stop. Even if you have a high visibility you wont be seen in time if its an express train. Not only will your car be written off but you WILL die. No doubt about it. Dont run the risk. This goes for people and vehicles. And not to mention the train driver. My old school's teacher's dad was a driver, untill one day someone committed infront of him. He left to a country with no trains and he never came back. His daughter still lives in the uk as my old teacher but now her dad is gone. Dont take the risk please.
Yours, theo
Now imagine you were killed by the train. What about your family?
Hello there, another british rail fan here. It seems you don't understand sarcasm.
@@Rowan66109 ik
They should have used this footage in the recent TV campaign to not run the lights at level crossings- the middle of the car was completely flattened!
The second locomotive pushed the first, which was a powerless, brakeless, unmanned hulk, up to speed and released it to coast on into the car.The pusher then stopped under its own power, while the impact loco was braked by the car's wheels dragging through ballast piled against the outside faces of the rails.
Again this is genuine, genuine consumer advice
the snail was on the right hand line (going in the direction of the train), the train was running on the left hand side :)
0:56 the facepalm in his voice XD
As long as you don’t watch it in full screen, the resolution isn’t TERRIBLE... mostly.
As a 48 year old man, I can relate to both sides of this story
BBC Worldwide is a separate commercial company, distributing material from various sources, not just the BBC. These ads are put on by UA-cam.
This is absolutely brilliant IMO. They're not belittling people, they're not trying to lecture us but quite frankly this /is/ how you can get the message across. It looks fun, until you see what actually happens to that car; in slowmo. Don't skip the red light; in the UK, in Holland, wherever you are. Its not worth it. (without a reflecting jacket that is ;)).
my gran drives an automatic and thought it was in reverse, when it was actually in first, she went plowing into a park car lol bless her!
Screw her! Ruined a parked car.
Exactly !! Strange how out of the whole video I was thinking if the snail made it or not :)))
"Always..wear this..thank you."
That's pretty cool that Gavin got to do a Slow Motion shot for Top Gear!!
Have you tried reading some of the other comments? It's explained in full at least once on almost every page!
If this happens with one of those high speed trains, the maintainance crew will be reaching for the paint thinners at first thinking someone painted the wreck on the front as a prank.
How many level crossings are there going to be across the HS2 line?
Psychotol None you stupid person
TomCrippsTrains Sure you've not overestimated the thinking abilities of our government? They still think privatising the public transport system was a good idea.
The other loco pushed the first one, unpowered and unmanned for safety reasons, up to 85mph, then braked, allowing the dead engine to coast into the car. That was then braked by ballast piled against the outer edges of the rails to drag on the car's wheels. The braking point for the pusher was the "Stop" sign clipped to the rail on the other, unused, track, on which the snail was filmed.
What's the point of wearing a visibility jacket when you shouldn't be doing anything on the railway track in the first place? LOL
Well done Gavin!
All health and safety adverts should be done by Top Gear
So the message is supposed to be don't drive around gates and stuff, but for humor, they made it "wear a high visibility jacket"
Me too. It's not like they will be able to see them in their cars and stop in ten feet.
class 31, built in loughborough around 1960
It was offered to the team, and, according to the Hamster, Jeremy volunteered. The Top Gear item evolved around a short safety ad being made by Network Rail, showing just the track with flora and fauna, crossing lights, the collision and the wreckage, ending with the slogan "Level Crossings - Don't Run the Risk." The ad was withdrawn as being "too graphic", while Clarkson's comic version has long outlived it, and probably been seen by more people.
