    Not only did I notice it on my first viewing but it was my favorite part of the film.
    Well, second favorite.
    Tamlyn Tomita stole my heart!
    Personally i prefer this movie to the original.

    I always felt that Sato wasn't trying to break that log. He has it nicely set in his backyard. He hits it to strengthen his hand with no intention of breaking it. In fact, I think it represents, along with his love for his old master Miyagi sr., his only other connection to the friendship he used to share with Miyagi. Miyagi himself recognizes it as the log they found together on the beach when they were boys and maybe this gives him hope that he can still get through to Sato. Anyway, I mostly only had eyes for Tamlyn Tomita while watching this film!

      Hi Rob. I never saw it that way, but it's an interesting theory... So do you think there's a connection between Miyagi saying "don't know. Never been attacked by tree" and the ending scene when Miyagi has to break the log?

    • @robsmoviecollection3715
      @robsmoviecollection3715 3 роки тому +1

      @@Joelikesmoviesnstuff I think as you said Miyagi doesn't need to do flashy things like that because that's not what karate is about for him. It's always been about focus and balance. He says it many times to Daniel. He doesn't break the log to show off but for a purpose-to save Sato and bring balance to their lives and friendship. At least that's the result. Remember that there's also a parallel earlier in the film when he helps Daniel break through the blocks of ice by encouraging him to focus. Not for showing off and just winning the money for material gains but to provide money for Daniel to go to college thus replacing the money that Daniel sacrificed to go to Japan with Miyagi. Balance restored.

    Never missed this. Karate Kid II is by far my favorite of the series. I also had the Sato toy as a kid which did break the log. The second karate kid was much deeper, much better story, much better culturally, much more interesting villain I thought. Chosen is more complicated and a better villain then another typical high school jock bully..... Has a relationship to sato, miyagi, Kimiko, the community (mostly as a can man) are all more interesting. He looks like a bigger badass in terms of being a villain. The costume was fantastic with what they had him wear during the final battle. It looks incredibly badass and cool at the same time. It's not tournament, it's for real. Possible Life death stakes. Doesn't get more interesting than that. The culture, the dance, the "baby rattles" inspiring Danielson to kick his butt. All of it is much larger and more fantastic and much deeper and interesting than anything the first movie had.
    Also you have Peter Cetera with the glory of love. How is karate kid 2 not people's favorite?

    • @Joelikesmoviesnstuff
      @Joelikesmoviesnstuff  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing. I also once had that Sato toy... I'm glad you like the Karate Kid II so much. Before hitting "Reply" on this post, I started typing out a list of reasons why I prefer the first Karate Kid movie to part II. But then I realized it sounded like I was completely trashing part II, and that's really not what I intended to do (nor was I looking to annoy you). So I just deleted that list of reasons (and I'm typing what you're reading, instead)... If you really want to hear my reasons, I'll type them out again. But I'd just like to make sure you're clear: I'm not trying to say part II was a bad movie, I'm just saying why I don't think it's as good as the first.

    A person could watch the movie over and over and pick up all sorts of themes. One theme that jumps out at me is that it is better to forgive than to hold a grudge. In the movie Sato held a grudge against miyagi for refusing to fight Sato over a woman they both fell in love with. Sato realized it was better for him to forgive Miyagi and let go of his grudge. Daniel showed Chozen the same lesson. If Chozen had just forgiven Daniel he wouldnt have lost face in front of his own village.
    Another theme i find in the movie is truth ultimately manifests itself. When Daniel broke the ice he showed that his karate was true and his technique was true. When Miyagi broke the wooden beam he showed that his karate was true. When Daniel defeated Chozen he demonstrated his miyagi do was the true miyagi do.

    • @Joelikesmoviesnstuff
      @Joelikesmoviesnstuff  3 роки тому +1

      Hi j fearless! I completely agree with you about the forgiveness story. But in all honesty, I'm not sure if I follow what you're saying with the second story. It'd be interesting to try to think of a connection to Daniel breaking the ice and Miyagi breaking the wood. But I'm not sure if I really see it.

    Here’s a story you may not know about, “Joe likes movies n stuff”
    Mrs Lucille LaRusso (Daniel's mom) and Adrian Pennino from "Rocky" are second cousins (they have the same great grandparents).
    When Lucille (nee Rinaldi) was nine-years-old, she had spent a summer in Philly with her cousins Adrian and Paul ("Paulie"). Paulie, not liking the color of a brand new bike he got for his latest birthday, gave that bike away to Lucille. With great effort, Lucille's parents managed to strap it to the top of their car and bring it back to Newark (just like Lucille & her son Daniel strapped it to the top of that clunky station wagon at the start of "The Karate Kid" before starting their trek to California).
    THAT bike is the very same one that would eventually be given to and ridden by Daniel (& repaired by Mr Miyagi) in “The Karate Kid”.
    (Young Lucille Rinaldi never really wanted it or rode it. It was mostly at her parents’ insistence that they take it.
    But upon meeting, dating, and eventually marrying Roberto LaRusso 14 years later, Roberto pulled it out from the Rinaldi garage, refurbished it from its decrepit state, fully restoring it, and rode it every other weekend. Then, when their son Daniel was about nine-years-old, long before succumbing to horrific brain cancer, Roberto gave it to Daniel.)
    And so goes the story of Daniel’s bike before he would go on to have it trashed after Johnny and his Cobra-Kais almost killed him by driving him off a road and sent him flying down a hill… and before Mr Miyagi would then restore it to its full-functioning glory, just as Daniel’s father had done before.
    Later, after defeating Johnny at the All-Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament, Chozen in Okinawa, and Mike Barnes upon his victorious return to compete in the All-Valley Tournament yet again, Mr Daniel LaRusso would ride that fateful bike across America to raise awareness and funds to donate to brain cancer research in honour of his late father who he still loved and missed dearly.
    Just kidding of course. A silly ramble of fan-fiction for your enjoyment.

    Sato wasn't trying to break the log during training. He was hardening his hand. The Sato character could easily break the logs also. The true meaning is that Sato didn't want to destroy that log because he and Miyagi found it together which means deep down he still valued his friendship with Miyagi
