- "Jake" is one of our notorious level 6-7 trails in the Black Hills. Lockers are required on this trail for organized events. Will the Mistress make it out of the exit without them? watch to the end to find out !
If you're in the black hills for an organized Jeep event, you're going to have to have lockers... we just wanted to prove that it can be done without them... mission accomplished 😎
Thank you
It can be done if you don't mind tearing up your vehicle in the process
Nice!!
Thanks!
You don't have to have lockers but it makes life simpler and less trouble for your jeep
But we're poor... we'll go to Dana 44's, get lockers and chrome moly shafts when we can afford them... also don't really want to spend $$$ on Dana 30/35's... kinda like putting lipstick on a pig
I understand you don't have the money and I completely understand that and I have been in the same situation many times so I definitely understand
A locker can't be but a couple hundred and you tore up more than that to prove you didn't have to have them it doesn't make good sense
We haven't broken anything yet, and more than likely, the reason we have not broken the Dana 30's is because they don't have lockers... and last time I checked, electric lockers for a Dana 30 is around $1100.00. Not including the chrome moly shafts at around $600.00 for no name questionable ones... around $900.00 for big name like Currie or Dynatrac.... we'll just continue to pick the best line and use finesse...thank you for commenting and for checking out our channel
Nice job! My 2002 TJ is a work in progress. What gearing are you running? Manual transmission?
At the time that video was shot, we were running the stock 4:10s that came with the 2.5L and manual transmission.
Engine is Grand Cherokee 4.7 Dodge ram NV3500 five speed manual. Still usable for highway and trail. Thanks for watching
@@Jeep_psychology_101 You did a great job getting through the trail.
hi nice video any issue with running the hood louvers with rain getting in on the engine ?
Thanks for watching! No issues what so ever... everything on the 4.7 from the ignition coils, to the engine sensors, injectors, PCM, etc, etc, are rubber "O"ringed, and Jeep has used Thomas and Betts silicone rubber waterproof connectors for a very long time. I spray it off with high pressure regularly, even though you'd never know because it's always muddy... so... no, no issues with a little water from rain. The main reason for the louvered hood was to lower the manifold intake temperature, which measured on a scan tool, lowered the temperature by 12° f... thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy the channel
I would add there is a reason for owning a winch. If you go into a trail without lockers there is no shame in using your winch.
what tires are you running ? they seem great for trailing
Mickey Thompson Baja Claw, 35x12.50 15" 10 ply. Very stiff sidewalls.... don't look like they're aired down when they are
Nice job. Try it with less air next time. I promise it will make a huge difference
No front lockers makes for a sure enough technical challenge. Good job!
No lockers at all!!! Open differential on both ends!!! Thanks for watching!!!
haha, If you had to run 30 or so rigs thru as a group, you would impose conditions on those rigs too.
You're not wrong.... and throw some over confident newbies in the mix, could make for a long day... thanks for the comment
Do you air down any?
Running at 20 PSI , it seems to be just about right for the Mickey Thompson Baja Claw tires... but how much to air down is open for debate
I like to maintain at least 20 PSI also because I don't want too much traction, I'd rather spin a tire than twist an axel shaft....
Most of those Jamboree trips require lockers because most people off-roading don’t understand finesse and good lines.
They also take themselves far too seriously.
Finesse and good lines are of the utmost importance to us as we're doing this in a 25 year old Jeep with really clapped out BDS suspension and the lightest axels ever put in a Jeep ... With that said, we really appreciate you watching and stay tuned... we're just getting warmed up 👍🏻😎
I definitely agree 👍🏻 studying your terrain for the best line, and good tire placement goes a very long way
Ive some fantastic drivers that need zero lockers for a lot of conditions.
Even BLD is a HUGE help. People with newer Wranglers will be like "I'm driving open-open" ... I kind of laugh and I'm like.... Not really... This guy, yeah, it's the real deal. This is real, old school, open-open. Old school was way more hard core compared to the cheater tech we have now, I hate to say it. I have to salute the old guys that had no BLD / atrac , etc. You guys are hard core.
I find that when you don't have lockers, you spend more time walking the trail and planning every tire placement, besides not having lockers is easier on the stock Dana 30 axel shafts
@@Jeep_psychology_101 agreed. Love the rear locker on my Cherokee Trailhawk. It's a total "cheat code". I'll never do what a Wrangler with front and rear lockers and 40s will do though. There's no question. Colorado Mall Crawlers found the limit of the Cherokee Trailhawk with a 2-3 inch lift and it's the first part of Wheeler Lake. That's all it will do no matter how many mods you have and that's if you're a great driver. So I'd say that's the limit of my Jeep , if that. As of 2023 , anyway. They keep making more and more kits for it. We'll see. Needs rear RCV (front RCV is available) and front subframe drop (rear subframe drop is available) to hang with modded XJs , or to stand a chance. This trail would be at the limit. If my jeep could do it, I'd need some suspension arm skids (they're available). Already has like 5 skids from the factory besides that. Tough trail.
Ok you made it without lockers but how much easier would it have been with them that's the part you didn't talk about and how much do you break because you won't buy lockers pros versus cons i think pros would win
Well Josh, the original plan with this Jeep was to start with the axels, but the engine had other plans. Right now all of our 44 upgrade, locker and chrome moly shafts money is on its way to Ukraine and just an fyi, haven't broken anything yet. Choose lines carefully and don't run it like you're trying to win KOH and Dana 30's will live a very long time. Also, can't really comment on how much easier it would be with lockers, since I've never owned a Jeep with lockers... just sayin'
