Just yesterday I sat next to a strawberry plant and cried as it reminded me of a very tough time of childhood when I found a small strawberry patch in a ravaged yard on the side of my home. It was so pretty and out of place. It had to have survived the worst conditions given its location…but it lived.

I’ve planted a lot of things in my pots that I have. I’ve planted peas, potatoes, carrots, broccoli, some herbs, strawberries, lettuce, and garlic outside. Inside I have tomatoes, beans, and cantaloupe.

I enjoy your gardening enthusiasm and agree with the therapeutic aspects gardening brings to our lives.
I have a small yard now and tight budget but I've found all kinds of ways to grow. One a huge semi truck tire for raised bed. A friend gave me a wooden box that was some kind of crate made a perfect raised bed. I grow vertically with trellis too. Pots are placed on wooden outdoor stairs leading to a balcony. I find soil from wooded area under old rotted tree's. Also compost from...well you know. Lol.
All herbs are medicine to me..pure love for health.
Today I gathered dandelions and violets for winter tea, jelly, and to infuse vinegar.
Spring is so joyful!

Great tip about separating out the shop-bought herbs! I can never get coriander to grow from seed but my husband loves it (tastes like soap to me)

I have always loved gardening and for many years have grown veggies and plants. But!!!! since finding Growveg and the great Ben and team! we just have learnt so much, including better ways to do things as well as brand new things. We don't have a huge garden but have utalised much of the space in different ways. i love the way The Growveg team use what they have. i have had such a great time binge watching all the videos and will continue to do so learning as much as i can. Im also trying to teach my daughter all the benifits of growing and harvesting your own produce. Anyone in UK, I noticed Lidl are selling pallet collar Style raised beds kits, in 2 different sizes.
They are also selling standing raised beds to, both wooden and metal.

A tornado came across my property early morning on March 23. It made a diagonal cut across the property, felling several trees. The good news it the damage to my house is minor, and limited to the back deck. Miracously, my new green house survived the storm, including half inch hail with minor damage, a couple of branches pierced the west facing side like arrows, and there was a foot of separation on the bottom skirt seam. All of the damage has been patched. Netting covering all of my raised beds spared most of my garden from the hail. The newly sprouted potatoes, if anything, got a boost of growth from the storm. Some of my lettuce and my snow peas took a beating, but are recovering surprisingly well. Seeds that I dropped for Greek Oregano, Sweet Marjoram, Italian Basil, Sweet Basil, Cinnamon Basil, and Persian Basil (I use a lot of basil in cooking.) are sprouting. Next on my list is sowing seeds for Thumbelina Zinnias, Shasta Daisies, Marigolds, Rattlesnake pole beans, Oriental Yard Long Beans, and transplanting seedlings for squash and cucumbers. I am still waiting for half of my cucumber and squash seeds to sprout. They were reseeded a few days ago. I also reseeded some of my pepper and tomato seeds for poor or no germination. I've narrowed my germination problem down to the potting soil I am using, and changed it to a brand that has worked reliably for me in the past.
So pleased many of your plants escaped the worst of the storm. That must have been a terrifying experience!

It's mid autumn here and first frost is due soon. My veg patch is winding down: remaining tomatoes will come out in a week (and be pickled), cucumbers, beans and squash are done. Brassicas and salads for winter harvest are growing well, leeks filling out nicely, garlic and broad beans will be planted by the grandchildren in the coming week. Enjoy your growing season😁

I love those pop-up raised beds made from pallet collars! I would have never thought to put hinges on the corners for easy storage until you need to use them or when you’re done with one. How smart!
That’s how the pallet collars come. Makes them incredibly convenient.

Good video Ben,I started off growing in pots,containers and buckets because my soil was so poor and heavy with clay, although I have moved on to create beds with compost,I still use containers and buckets for all my potatoes and carrots,the beauty of growing carrots in containers is that when you want to harvest a container of carrots,you can take it far away from your other containers of growing carrots,which helps to keep carrot root fly well away from your growing garden.👍
That is a huge advantage of growing carrots in pots. 😀

i love when you show your dog. being alone, my dog is with me in most situations. she even is allowed in church (i limit for occasions only) especially at picnics and outdoor worship. i have a garden this year and it is in an open field. this is perfect for her to roam while i work. i discovered years ago that the presence of a dog reduces wildlife pests especially if the dog is a hunter.
Dogs are great gardening companions. :-)

Thanks for another inspirational video, Ben. My family will be visiting England in July and again in September this year so I can see how my family grows their gardens. Here in 9B Sacramento, Ca I just potted 6 tomato plants grown from seed. I also potted 2 overwintered Basil plants. and started my herb garden from seed and my cucumbers, zucchini and yellow squash from direct seed. 70F today here, it has been a wet and cold March so everything here is delayed by one month. I will have to wait until July to replant my overwintered hot pepper plants, needs to be 60F for overnight low or above, or they will die. Thanks again Ben. Love the encouragement you give.
Sounds like you are well ahead Stephen and I am sure the things that were delayed by March’s cold will very quickly catch-up. 😀
Here in 5b, if we needed to wait until night time temps of 60 degrees, we wouldn't have any ripe peppers.
I have found that the C. Annum (mostly South American peppers) to be more cold hardy, but I plant all out once soil temp is over 50 and air temps stay over 40. I have had great peppers.

Just started on my garden, currently back breaking work getting rid of years of negligence (unfortunately ill grand parents). Hi, Ben. Subscriber here from mid-Missouri, USA. I started my garden 10 years ago. It has become more flowers than vegetables now, but I wanted to share a successful failure I've just had: Normally, I pull my cabbage stumps in the fall, or, if they don't pull out easily, I don't bother until spring when I want to plant again. This spring, there were three cabbage stumps I failed to get out that were regrowing, and I left them to do what they would. What they did was each produce two to three lovely heads of cabbage that are as nice as the one original head I harvested last season. How generous of them! Thanks so much for your videos. They're as entertaining as they are informative.

Such a lovely video 😊 I agree with everything you said about how amazing gardening is! I was always so intimated by it, but last year I took the leap and it has been wonderful! I garden mostly in raised beds on legs (so higher off the ground, helps a lot against slugs!) and in containers. Right in my terrace in the backyard. It’s my happy place!

Mix small seed with some sand before sprinkling. It spreads them out better.

Love your videos - very inspirational and loaded with helpful tips. I must comment that leveling the raised garden beds was quite a bit more work for us than you described. However, given the voracious moles/voles, raised garden beds with hardware cloth at the bottom was a necessity where we live.
Sorry it was a bit more involved. Once it’s nice and level though it makes all the difference and will hopefully be good for some years to come.
this is a beautiful video i love the fact of what i can grow in a 40 m plot.....and believe me its a lot.....cucs toms parsnips beets lettuce kholrabi cabbage and so so much more.....climbing french beans look at companion planting its quite amazing......ie dont ever plant beans with onions....both crops will fail....plant onions with cabbage ....good crop every time

great video! i think more and more people in the UK will be growing their own fruit and veg because of the prices of them in supermarkets. the taste is so different to shop purchased products. I did do the basil last year from supermarket live plants and separate out as companion planting between my tomatoes but this year will attempt from seed!

Also, I can’t afford to put potting mix into new raised beds my soil is already good only I haven’t got enough of it. I have a community garden that I’ve had for a number of years my problem is they don’t let us compost here anymore so I’ve just been burying the residue of my veggie plants slightly chopped up at the end of the season. What would you say is the best combination to make myself a potting mix that I can put into my raised beds.
It's a shame you can't make your own compost - that seems like an odd decision by the community garden. Homemade compost is cheapest, but another option could be to source well-rotted manure locally, if there are stables etc. Or perhaps scrape up soil from the paths and feed this into the raised beds to part-fill them?

My 1st time having bulb flower success. Put them all in different containers bc I have to refridgerate most: Tulips & Hyacinth (smells amazing) have popped up and blossomed! Waiting for the Ranunculus, Daffodil, Pushkinia, Iris, Allium to bloom. Will put in Dahlia, Tigridia, Blue Hosta and Elephant Ear soon! Thx 4 the Vid 😊

Fab advice Ben, would you ever add good manure to your raised beds? I’ve got some but then seen that quite a few crops don’t do well in recently manured ground so I’m hesitant to use it.
Hi Louise. I would make sure it is very well rotted - so it's quite crumbly and almost like compost. Fresh stuff can harm crops, but properly rotted down manure shouldn't be a problem.

The beds are about 1x1.2m. The board are around an inch (2cm) thick and about 5-6in (12-15cm) deep.

Thanks a lot for one more great video. As a garden expert, do you know how garden centres manage to grow big healthy looking plants in small containers? I aim to grow organically however have feeling if I buy a plant from a nursery, it might be fed by some environment unfriendly chemicals. Would be grateful for your response.
Usually just grown with potting mix/compost and potentially a little slow release fertiliser. They will make sure the growing conditions are ideal to ensure good, strong growth and healthy looking plants for sale.

Hi Alan. I'm using pallet collars to make my raised bed. I found them on Facebook Marketplace - there are lots of local suppliers here in the UK. You could also try sites like Gumtree and Craigslist.

They're pallet collars. I just search on Facebook Marketplace but you could also try Craigslist, Gumtree etc.
How long do you pallet collar beds last? And do you ever line them eg with compost bag plastic? Would that extend their life?
Hi Susan. My oldest pallet collar beds are three (or possibly four) years old and still going strong - no deterioration yet. I haven't lined them at all, but in theory this could extend their life a little.
