This song represents the most difficult time in the bands history. Napster, Jason leaving, James going to rehab and the band almost falling apart. The lyrics and the music video are very symbolic in that regard. Huge fan of the song and it's a taste of what the initially planned 2000 record would have sounded like with Jason in the band.

Tbh I like Jason's part in this video. The others have action parts, whereas Jason is moving in the opposite direction of a crowd, symbolizing social defiance - which is probably the only struggle depicted in the video most of us has actually faced.

I was a 10 year old girl when this song came out and I found it so badass... it's how I became a Metallica fan and searched for all their albums.
I know it’s coincidence but the fact that the end of the chorus is “just as soon as I belong, then it’s time I disappear” feels appropriate for Jason’s last song with the band.
Always felt that the scene of Jason walking against the crowd of people was a representation of his relationship with the band.

I always answer this to whomever sayas Jason never actually fit in Metallica. He did was he was taken to do in the band. The fact that James, Kirk and Lars never got over Cliff Burton's death isnot his fault. He really was patient and tolerated a lot from those never grown up assholes. They even dare to say at the castings when they were about to decide in favor of Robert Trujillo, that they "didnt have that feeling since Cliff". Ungrateful bastards. Yeah sure, you never sounded with Good bass during Jason Newsted's era. You just made about 60 millions copies from "...And justice for all all the way till St. Anger), just about 15 years. Cliff Burton's time in Metallica was just 5 years. And they moan it three times that time, making a hell of a life for Jason, just because he took the dead basist place in the band. Talking about childish behaviour. And for 15years he stood there with the remorse of his "partners" who never actually embrace him because of the previous member's memory. This is how you DO NOT EMBRACE A NEW MEMBER AND MAKE HIS LIFE A LIVING HELL. Hope he now is in some place where he is really appreciated.

This is a prove that Lars, Kirk, James and Jason are talented to be the Actors!! I love the destructive effect when Lars ran out from the Building! His act was cool!! Kirk had also a great movement when being chased by the plane, love Jason puzzled mimic in d middle of flocking people, and how cool was James on that Muscle Car!! James' style with beard and 2000s sunglass was Flawless!! The song itsellf..? KICKED ASS!!! Awesome clip!!

@@CobitoTorres I remember scratching my head because of the drum sound when I first heard the song. The bass drum is pretty shitty too, really dark and doesn't cut throught at all. I can see the bass drum as an attempt at giving it more of a classic rock sound or something. The snare came from nu metal I guess.
I connect St. Anger with the whole garage revival thing going on at the time. In the early '00s it was "cool" to sound shitty.

Which is more of how it sounds in I Disappear plus it's lower in the mix. The problem in St. Anger is that the beats are DPANG!DPANG!DPANG!DPANG!DPANG!DPANG!DPANG!DPANG! See how annoying that is?
