I love both Rapunzels because they're part of my childhood. Yet, I watched Barbie as Rapunzel on a VHS in my caretaker's house as a baby girl. I watched Tangled the moment after it came out on my birthday and I went to see it as a birthday treat. Although I love The Little Mermaid is my top favourite but Tangled is my 2nd favourite.

I love both so much! I absolutely agree with you, they have the same source material, of course a lot of stuff would end up being similar, and while its also important to point out that even beyond that, therw indeed exists some pretty weird similarities that have nothing to do wiyh the original source material and would therefore have more to do with the newer movie taking elements from the older one, but even if that is the case, both movies slap and they're also different enough to be enjoyable by their own merits. Now, a lil' bit of anecdote time! Tbh, I've always been more of a Barbie girlie, and although of course i also loved Disney as anyone does, Barbie was always a priority to lil' me, as it was my First Hyperfixation™. The classic Barbie movies have always been my favorites, i watched them over and over as a kid, still have most of my dolls from those movies, including a Rapunzel doll, intact. While my favorite classic Barbie movie was Nutcracker, Rapunzel was my favorite Barbie MC because I saw a lot of myself in her 💖 But i digress: back to the point, when Frozen came out, as a Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus OG who also had developed an extreme hyperfixation in the written classic fairy tales, while of course I didn't make ghe connection at first, while watching the movie, kid me immediately realized that Frozen was also inspired in The Snow Queen and couldn't stop comparing them both. This in turn made me one of the scarce few kids who didn't absolutely adore Frozen back then, as kid me had reached the conclusion that, while Frozen was fun, Magic Of Pegasus was the superior by far between the both in every way possible. Contrast in with Tangled, it came out, and while I immediately noticed the obvious similarities between the Barbie version and the Disney versiok of Rapunzel, I also realized that that's where any and all major similarities unrelated to the original source material stopped so I wasn't offended by it in the slightest, and in fact ended up absolutely falling in love with Tangled, with it becoming one of my all time favorite Disney movies (and still is until this day). Its a pretty long anecdote, my apologies, and i also want to apoligize for my English, it isn't my first language, but i wanted to share this personal experience bc i find it a little funny how as a child i saw two extremely different movies based on the same source material and decided that the one made later on was inferior and then the same situation happened with two movies where there was actual elements taken from the oldest movie into the newer one but still utterly adored the newer one. Goes to show how what matters is not what you do (in this case, tell a story), but _how_ you do it. Execution is key, indeed.
While Tangled's quality is better, but they could've made more differences: 1. Use her dresses from the concept art (I'm biased towards the sleeveless green one). 2. Bastion is WAY superior to Flynn. The "sympathetic thief" trope is very exhausting. (Not that Stefan and Flynn were similar; I just don't like Flynn). 3. They could've made Rapunzel similar to Raya (granted, Raya didn't exist yet) by making her jaded and pessimistic of the world due to Gothel's manipulation.
