I learned about this decades ago from my high school advanced history class. L Frank Baum lived in a time in American history when there were recessions all the time, so for him to write a children's book, the current economic events of the day being allegorically inserted in the story was a stroke of his genius.

If Baum had wanted to talk about economics, he'd have done so explicitly in a newspaper or magazine article. He would not have hidden it in a children's book.

I've been stacking since my eyes were opened in late 2008. As much power, effort and illusion that have gone into keeping silver out of the hands of the people, even I have trouble imagining the magnitude of how amazing it would be (and how high silver's purchasing power would be) if everyone in the world went back to transacting in scarce, real money again.

The US was not bimetalist to begin with. It was purely a silver monetary system. But eventually they wanted a bigger denomination coin for large transactions and it would have been cumbersome to carry around a silver coin that was 10x bigger. So they made it out of gold, inadvertently creating a bimetal system which are always doomed because when the ratio of the price of the metals fluctuate arbitrators will exchange the lower price one for the higher one and sell it to other countries causing a currency shortage.

    • @CampbellsCoins

From 1792 the U.S. has been on a bimetallic state. It was written in the constitution in 1789.

It makes perfect sense. Money is gold and silver. The yellow brick road is a road that could mean, that it was made of gold. We also say, just follow the money. In the end, the wizard of Oz was manipulating everything that was going on in Oz. Oz can be the federal reserve. The wizard is the chairman. ALL FAIRYTALES HAVE SOME INCEPTIONS IN FACTS!

    Okay, a couple of things...
    1) If you read the books, one thing you find out is that gold and silver are so plentiful in Oz that they don't have any special value and can be used for many things.
    2) IIRC-and I usually do-the line "You're as good as gold" is in the 1939 movie. I just don't own a copy to check that out. That line would have resonated with audiences of that time who had only given up their own gold 5 years earlier.
    3) And yes, one more thing, thru 1965 the phrase "Do you have any silver" was synonymous with "Do you have any change."

Super cool video. I think the most interesting aspect of the free silver movement was that they promoted a ratio of 16 to 1 instead of the value on the open market. Which was more like 32. If not for that one mistake we might still be on a bimetallic standard. I think it’s also interesting that silverights that is the followers of William Jennings Bryan we’re actually inflationist. Again thanks for the great video

    • @CampbellsCoins
      @CampbellsCoins  2 роки тому

Definitely. I never looked into their reasoning for the ratio but I've heard it's what they thought the natural ratio of gold and silver was; too bad they didn't realize it's more like 8:1. Thanks for watching!

But of course the scene with the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda does not happen in the book at all. It is not until Dorothy is brought to her castle to be made a servant that the Wicked Witch even knows about the Silver Shoes ("She looked down at Dorothy’s feet, and seeing the Silver Shoes, began to tremble with fear, for she knew what a powerful charm belonged to them.") . So this "powerful statement" is entirely a film invention, and involves the film's ruby slippers, not Silver Shoes. This is typical of such theories, where everything is fit into the procrustean bed of the theory, regardless of the facts. One is reminded of Mark Twain's line in Life on the Mississippi: There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact.
Frankly (pun intended), even Littlefield's seminal article on the 'Populist Parable' did not argue that Baum _wrote_ the book as an allegory; Littlefield's intent (like yours) was to dramatize for his high school students what is often a tedious subject, bimetalism and populism. This is why the 'allegory' can only include such vague generalizations as 'Dorothy represents the solid American farmers. Oh yes, and the Scarecrow represents farmers too.' 'Yellow brick road (never called that in the book; it is the road of yellow bricks, or road paved with yellow bricks)? Oh, that's the gold standard. Because it's yellow. Baum could have made them gold bricks, but that would have been too obvious. Like the Silver Shoes.'
And most importantly, perhaps, even in the years 1900-1910, when every parent reading the book to the 'kiddies' (as the publishers called them), and every newspaper editor and writer, was fully conversant with the important political issues of the time (more deeply familiar, indeed, than you or Littlefield or anyone else now living), and when The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was a tremendous best-seller and a hit Broadway musical (the first mention, by the way, of Dorothy Gale's family name: "This Dorothy Gale, of the Kansas Gales." "Oh, that accounts for her breezy manner." No sophisticated humor here), NO ONE, not one newspaper editorial, nor article, nor letter to the editor, nor review, nor editorial cartoon, nor even Baum's 1919 obituaries, ever noticed this allegory. It took sixty years before Littlefield came up with it, and by his own admission, it was a pedagogical contrivance.
In effect, the idea that The Wizard of Oz was written as some kind of encoded political allegory has become urban folklore. There is no actual evidence for this; an allegorical 'reading' of the book tells more about the reader than the book or the author. But we live in an age when 'the death of the author' has some critical currency (pun intended again). There are pictures in clouds too, but they are put there by the observer.

Frank didn't name Oz for ounce, it was because while trying to find a title for his book, he spotted his file cabinet that read O-Z. But the movie was made before the pink floyd so I don't know how it connects just because it has a rainbow on the cover. Even members themselves have said there was no connection of oz to the album. From what I read, there wasn't any representation given to the Wicked Witch of the Wests' beasts. In the book, she had a pack of 40 wolves, 40 bees and birds, followed by an army of Winkies and finally the flying monkeys. Given that the IRS didn't exist until after the book was written, I can only assume Baum is a time traveler and the monkeys are foreshadowed IRS agents working at the behest of the bankers. 😂

Indeed - and most amazingly, he finishes up with the Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard of Oz canard, which is well known to be rubbish. I think the Alan Parsons (engineer for Dark Side of the Moon) quote on the Wikipedia page on the subject says it all, about both urban legends: "if you play any record with the sound turned down on the TV, you will find things that work."
