Creating a Pottery Coffee Cup - From Beginning to End

  • I love creating these, ‘How it’s Made’, style videos. From footage gathered over the past year or two and edited into a seamless, flowing process that quickly shows how a lump of clay turns into the finished, reduction fired vessel.
    If only the actual process were as smooth. In between most stages are periods of waiting for clay to firm up, for glazes to dry, for kilns to cool down. At times producing pots feels like you’re juggling ten different tasks, different processes and finally all of that comes to a conclusion, weeks or months later, after my gas kiln has been packed and fired to 1290ºc.
    Not to mention trying to film every stage - social media is, very much a second job of mine - but I sometimes enjoy documenting my work as much as making it and when looking back in a decades time there’ll be a vast trove of pictures and film showing almost every pot I’ve made during that period. It’ll hopefully be easy to see how my style has changed, albeit slowly and surely. Hopefully I don’t look back on it in the same way I do pots made ten years ago from now.

    I'm fascinated yet stressed by this video. I took a pottery class in college for pass/fail. I wasn't great at it but I practiced a lot and really tried. And more importantly I enjoyed it. The professor was very arrogant and looked down on me for not being an art major. One day he told me that they were never going to offer the class pass/fail again because of me. It was very hurtful and I stopped going to class for several weeks. I don't think I realized until now how much this still bothers me over 20 years later. I long to do pottery but it really stresses me out to think about it.

      I practiced clay modeling when I was about 7, still remember and use everything I learned back then to this day, but the teacher ended up scamming everyone in the class for money (supposedly to get more material to keep teaching us) and fleeing the country, so there's that

      Wow. Shame on him. Instead of criticizing you he should have taught you. Awful teacher. I wonder how he got as far as he did. Please do try again. Especially if you want to! A local adult ed or community college is a good place to start. Private studios give lessons, too. Don’t give up!

      Oh ya it’s a material called glaze. They paint it on pottery to give it more decor and safety reasons. You can’t eat off of pottery with, the sections you would eat off food cause the clay parts with no glaze is not good for humans to digest off of.

    I barely know anything about pottery but I am curious. What’s the difference between the pulling method for the handle and just rolling and cutting out strips of clay?

    • @Barthoization
      @Barthoization Рік тому

      my guess is that it compresses the clay more and alignes it so it doesn't deform quickly while drying. It can also be made quite thin and uniform.

    • @CrowButter
      @CrowButter Рік тому

      I believe it’s because pulling it is easier to make uniform. When you are rolling the clay, it can get like flat sometimes or lumpy from where your fingers we’re rolling it and stuff- they both work though

    Did the pinholing after dipping not cause there to be a pinhole effect after firing or does the glaze just run into the gaps?

      He smooths out the surface with his finger by gently rubbing it. You can see this in the clip. You should watch his video that details the process of how he glazes his ceramics.
      But generally, as long as there are no air bubbles in your clay (he also has a video on how he preps his clay via wedging to remove air bubbles), then you won't get any pinholes or dimples as the glaze melts when fired.

  • @vanmonroe4346
    @vanmonroe4346 Рік тому

    If you're going to mass-produce individual cups that don't look like they were made individually by hand, do yourself a favor and learn slip casting. Otherwise, leave some finger marks in the clay, the transition from handle to cup doesn't need to be seamlessly smooth, and try leaving the cup alone after cutting it off the wheel --- don't over-trim every detail with a tool. After cutting it free, roll the bottom edge once or twice on a canvas table to soften sharp edges. Otherwise, you're making the equivalent of slip cast pottery on the wheel.
