It's always strange to me that people don't like practicing with a metronome. You can't sound good without rhythm. Doesn't matter how much you practice scales, modes, or arpeggios; if your rhythm sucks then nothing that you play will sound good. It's the foundation of all music.
I thought my timing was good until I first sat down with a metronome and realized it was terrible! It helps me improve my playing and myself, too. I really believed my timing was great until I used a metronome! I appreciate having my mistakes so clearly outlined so i can be forced to acknowledge my sloppiness and that it’s ok to be sloppy! Its something to work on, over time. The progress I made from working on it is much more satisfying than my previous delusion of good timing.

I think the word that defines the best your skill is simplicity. Some guitarists can't play without a sg and a Marshall, or huge pedalboards, but you just need a esquire, an amp with volume and tone control and a metronome with one knob, and it sounds way better than the other guys. Amazing, truly amazing

Tomo, you are right on with this video today on the lost art in training with a metronome! its great for cleaning up bad fingerings, working with the correct pressure on fretting hand and picking hand rhythm/articulation ..Itsand a great reminder to players of ALL levels that foundation is everything in timing,and ear training.To be a great guitar player/musician, patience and working on our weak points is most important thing,, performance comes after that.

Nothing like the sound of an old metronome. I had the opportunity to purchase one not too long ago that would've been a collectors item in the next decade but passed on. Though the value would've increased, I wouldn't have purchased it for that reason. It was the peace of that specific sound. Digital is okay but I find it too annoying to work with for long.

For me now I feel to get both, archtop at home and solid with the band…drummers in Italy (maybe everywhere) plays very very loud, and guitar is hard to lead on…vintage guitars are so amazing playing loudly, their voice is so natural at any loud level…and head+4x12 is better than a combo amp. I have always known that using a metronome was important. I’m just a couch doodler and don’t use it much. When I do I realize that I should. Not only is it great for proper rhythm and practice. I find the simplest boring stuff sounds so much better with a beat behind it. I can shred pretty quick. Half speed accurately with a click sounds more impressive than full speed without…unless you’re really good.😂

I personally never use a Metronome because of the irritating clicking noise that's distracting, not for me , but I respect it's purpose . I just counts the beats instead etc .
You can download apps that will let you change the sound so it’s not an annoying clicking noise. I use TonalEnergy, and I set it to a drum sound so 1 is the kick, 2 and 4 are snare. It’s also what I use with my students.

So happy to hear that. "Tape Recorder" Yes! I wrote it down now! You can review small portion (One Song or one groove) Or After practicing, play what you practiced ... 10 - 15 minutes. Review that. Many ways! Very very productive. I only use a 60 minuets tapes for that. So only 1/2 hour I can record on one side.
Or playing music.You can play Bb Jazz Blues or Bb blues for 5-6 times with a metronome so you now how long, how many times... limitation is so important. I just don't practice with any backing tracks.

Tomo, why can't I sing and play at the same time... I end up playing the notes I'm singing and can't do both at the same time... I can a little bit and getting slowly better, but it's very hard to separate!! Is this normal? thank you
If you do, someone just chasing whatever you can play! Try to imagine what you can hear inside of you so no idea where those notes are...so free! Don't mix up "Learning & Practicing" and "Performing" We all need more Ear Training!

Stevie and John also slow and speed up their fast licks... I am confused how to practice fast licks... sometime I feel like their licks are triplets, then they increase to 16th notes. Even though I've asked you this question before, I'd like to know the secret to playing like Mateus Asato does, who seems to be very independent on the fretboard and can go anywhere while creating beautiful melodies and solos without even thinking much. Because with me what happens is i tend to sound monotonous and repeat the same licks in a way that appears to lack logic, what is the key to playing like Asato does? Please assist me in this learning 🙏

@@Impractical_Engineer I totally forget to mention about this... you can imagine any of your favorite drummer (from your imagination) when you practice with a metronome. A metronome just keep in time but your imagination can shift (ahead or behind a little) And imagination is FREE!
Metronome is my good friend indeed but I'm not a good friend to metronome, I must admit. Listening to records is key! It helps you develop an internal metronome and also by using your body to feel the rhythm it becomes natural and instinctive. Dancing can help with developing a groove big time even just by bobbing your head to the beat and counting along with the tune, singing as well. I'm always counting when I'm listening to records. Well said Mr. Tomo. Btw I was in the Boston Commons yesterday and came across an amazing Berklee grad busking in the park. He did the entire Sir Duke composition on guitar and his timing was impeccable I was highly impressed. I told him to check you out!

Very shape oriented than other instrument so that its so friendly in the beginning and could stay same level for many years because not knowing the details than shapes and locations.
@@TomoFujitaMusic Yes indeed it was a little difficult transition for me as well being a horn player, the guitar is a completely different beast of an instrument and approach all together, especially when it comes to the fret board. But when it comes to playing music in general, there are a lot of similarities especially when it comes to lead style playing. Being a horn player has definitely come in handy when playing single note lines and melodies, but the chord shapes and navigating around the fret board definitely took me many hours/years of practice. Trumpet was my first instrument and I did have some measure of success with it but I totally fell in love with the guitar and have been playing for about 13 years now. I'm predominantly self taught but I've learned so much from doing UA-cam tutorials and your Guitar Wisdom. I'm getting there but like you said I don't want to become stagnant and not progress. I want to keep getting better and better. That's why I would love to take actual lessons and possibly even become a Berklee student myself someday. That's my dream Tomo. @@joeschmoe6720 Thanks for sharing the details. Guitar has "shapes" that you can slide to next key! That part you want to change that (learn a little difficult ways!) Try to play G Triad on 4321 set strings then play A triad on 2345 set strings! That's like a piano or horn to me! Funny part is I was trying to play "Pianist" or "Horn Players" in general. That's how I got my techniques & the fretboard knowledge. Thats why tabs can not educate people.
I'm one of those people who can't swing, so I no matter how much I convince myself to say 2 and 4, by the time I get going I'm saying 1 and 3 on the clicks. It seems like there's a secret way to insert an offset beat so that you always say 1and 3 when it's silent and two and four on the click. But I can't figure out how to do it consistently. It's like after a while I'll feel it as two and four.... and jam along with Tomo once he gets it all started. But if I start with my own click and no other context, it's never easy to lock into the two and four without a struggle.... for me at least.
That case, listen more swing jazz & just listen hi-hats on 2 & 4. Or Rock snare beat! How about this? Try hard on 1 & 3...someday it will flip to 2 & 4!!
@@TomoFujitaMusic I'll add the metronome into my daily regimen and see what I can do with it. I transcribe interesting bits of songs every day so I'm usually playing along with a tune... and slowing it down and counting it out.... and entering it into soundlice. On a song like _I've Found a New Baby_, I'm just happy to find the 1 ! But that is an example of a standard that has a pretty basic progression, but it's played really really fast. I'd like to be able to map that out nice and slow using the 2 and 4 trick to get the changes down. The melody is another story ! But it is such a fun old song! I am a creature of the early 20th century to be sure.
Tomo, I'm confused by just *one* chord you use here! I think I understand most of what you're doing with your chord changes and transitions between chords except at 1:03. You go from the IV chord (Eb9) to mystery chord right before you go to a more familiar diminished movement back to the I chord. And...I just don't know that I've seen that shape before or what to make of it. If there's an implied Eb in the bass then I can maybe imagine it as an inversion of Eb13? So it's just a different color of the IV chord before you go to the diminished? Is that what you were thinking? Or are you thinking of it as part of the diminished run with some different color notes in there? Anyways, GREAT video!! I'm guessing the mystery chord is meant to be Eb13 but would love to know if you had different thinking for it!
So I played IV chord (R M3 b7 9 5th) then b7 M3 13 R.. I learned that chord from my jazz guitar lesson. I took jazz guitar lessons for two years. Without those lessons, many things I did not know! Organ sounding chord to me. No root! b7 bottom then M3 13 Root! Root is the top note! Thank you so much!

Sorry Tomo, but on this I‘m not with you. There is absolutely no reason to get a metronome anymore. On the contrary. It‘s no fun to listen to that dull click all the time. It‘s much better to get some kind of drum machine or drum app. Absolutely no one uses a metronome on stage and only dumb old studio musicians use a click track in the studio. But everyone plays to backing tracks or live musicians or at least drum apps or machines - even when practicing. Sooo… 😁
And while we‘re at it: Before thinking of getting an expensive metronome, it may be a much better idea to get a looper. A lot of loopers - even the basic ones - have a drum function of some kind. The Boss loopers for instance have everything you need and even a metronome function for all those old geezers. 😁

i do believe that if you can get a metronome to groove with you, then you can get any drummer to do so. but not the other way around, so practicing with a metronome helps get the perfection you're seeking and jam with any time your bandmates want to play.
Mr Richard pay attention to tomo! by now know that if the geezers are doing it and having fun with it till this day then you just may be one who's not so sure. Metronome is simplicity! Drum loop pattern is not simple, too much distraction, you know. You have good taste, i know, but everybody has good tastes its individual, don't worry, don't compare, don't judge before you hear. Playing 8th notes and a metronome on 2 & 4 beats. Good musicians got this skill.

So happy to hear that. "Tape Recorder" Yes! I wrote it down now! You can review small portion (One Song or one groove) Or After practicing, play what you practiced ... 10 - 15 minutes. Review that. Many ways! Very very productive. I only use a 60 minuets tapes for that. So only 1/2 hour I can record on one side.
Or playing music.You can play Bb Jazz Blues or Bb blues for 5-6 times with a metronome so you now how long, how many times... limitation is so important. I just don't practice with any backing tracks.

I need this lesson oh boy do i. My timing is terrible and it really is my downfall. Ive tried using a metronome but im a dunce using it and have no idea how to set it up or what setting i should use.

Tomo, why can't I sing and play at the same time... I end up playing the notes I'm singing and can't do both at the same time... I can a little bit and getting slowly better, but it's very hard to separate!! Is this normal? thank you
If you do, someone just chasing whatever you can play! Try to imagine what you can hear inside of you so no idea where those notes are...so free! Don't mix up "Learning & Practicing" and "Performing" We all need more Ear Training!

I have another question Sensei: How to practice fast blues like like SRV and John to eventually play very fast over a slower blues tempo? lets say 80bpm blues, but you want to unleash a fast SRV lick... do you have to practice the lick triplet feel at a double tempo? like 160 bpm? Stevie and John also slow and speed up their fast licks... I am confused how to practice fast licks... sometime I feel like their licks are triplets, then they increase to 16th notes. I can play fast licks, but struggle to fit them correctly over the blues beat. Please help, thank you!

Even though I've asked you this question before, I'd like to know the secret to playing like Mateus Asato does, who seems to be very independent on the fretboard and can go anywhere while creating beautiful melodies and solos without even thinking much. Because with me what happens is i tend to sound monotonous and repeat the same licks in a way that appears to lack logic, what is the key to playing like Asato does?

So happy to hear that. Mateus Asato = Solid Foundation that most people don't work on. Best way is to transcribe his melody & chord progressions. If you don't understand his chord progressions then TRIADS!

@@Impractical_Engineer I totally forget to mention about this... you can imagine any of your favorite drummer (from your imagination) when you practice with a metronome. A metronome just keep in time but your imagination can shift (ahead or behind a little) And imagination is FREE!

Metronome is my good friend indeed but I'm not a good friend to metronome, I must admit. Listening to records is key! It helps you develop an internal metronome and also by using your body to feel the rhythm it becomes natural and instinctive. Dancing can help with developing a groove big time even just by bobbing your head to the beat and counting along with the tune, singing as well. I'm always counting when I'm listening to records. Well said Mr. Tomo. Btw I was in the Boston Commons yesterday and came across an amazing Berklee grad busking in the park. He did the entire Sir Duke composition on guitar and his timing was impeccable I was highly impressed. I told him to check you out!

Funny you mention it, that's exactly what I complimented him on the most. That's not an easy line to play especially on guitar. One thing I've been meaning to ask you, can you play the Grant Geissman solo from Chuck Mangione's "Feel So Good"? I'm dying to learn that!
@@joeschmoe6720 Thanks for sharing. Once I had a great trumpet player who wants study guitar. It was a little dfficult time translation from guitar to Trumpet. Guitar fretboard is very special! Very shape oriented than other instrument so that its so friendly in the beginning and could stay same level for many years because not knowing the details than shapes and locations.
@@TomoFujitaMusic Yes indeed it was a little difficult transition for me as well being a horn player, the guitar is a completely different beast of an instrument and approach all together, especially when it comes to the fret board. But when it comes to playing music in general, there are a lot of similarities especially when it comes to lead style playing. Being a horn player has definitely come in handy when playing single note lines and melodies, but the chord shapes and navigating around the fret board definitely took me many hours/years of practice.
Trumpet was my first instrument and I did have some measure of success with it but I totally fell in love with the guitar and have been playing for about 13 years now. I'm predominantly self taught but I've learned so much from doing UA-cam tutorials and your Guitar Wisdom. I'm getting there but like you said I don't want to become stagnant and not progress. I want to keep getting better and better. That's why I would love to take actual lessons and possibly even become a Berklee student myself someday. That's my dream Tomo. It is a very special instrument indeed and a huge part of my life.

@@joeschmoe6720 Thanks for sharing the details. Guitar has "shapes" that you can slide to next key! That part you want to change that (learn a little difficult ways!) Try to play G Triad on 4321 set strings then play A triad on 2345 set strings! That's like a piano or horn to me! Funny part is I was trying to play "Pianist" or "Horn Players" in general. That's how I got my techniques & the fretboard knowledge. Thats why tabs can not educate people.
I'm one of those people who can't swing, so I no matter how much I convince myself to say 2 and 4, by the time I get going I'm saying 1 and 3 on the clicks. It seems like there's a secret way to insert an offset beat so that you always say 1and 3 when it's silent and two and four on the click. But I can't figure out how to do it consistently. It's like after a while I'll feel it as two and four.... and jam along with Tomo once he gets it all started. But if I start with my own click and no other context, it's never easy to lock into the two and four without a struggle.... for me at least.
That case, listen more swing jazz & just listen hi-hats on 2 & 4. Or Rock snare beat! How about this? Try hard on 1 & 3...someday it will flip to 2 & 4!!
@@TomoFujitaMusic I'll add the metronome into my daily regimen and see what I can do with it. I transcribe interesting bits of songs every day so I'm usually playing along with a tune... and slowing it down and counting it out.... and entering it into soundlice.
On a song like _I've Found a New Baby_, I'm just happy to find the 1 ! But that is an example of a standard that has a pretty basic progression, but it's played really really fast. I'd like to be able to map that out nice and slow using the 2 and 4 trick to get the changes down.
The melody is another story ! But it is such a fun old song! I am a creature of the early 20th century to be sure.

Tomo, I'm confused by just *one* chord you use here! I think I understand most of what you're doing with your chord changes and transitions between chords except at 1:03. You go from the IV chord (Eb9) to mystery chord right before you go to a more familiar diminished movement back to the I chord.
And...I just don't know that I've seen that shape before or what to make of it. If there's an implied Eb in the bass then I can maybe imagine it as an inversion of Eb13? So it's just a different color of the IV chord before you go to the diminished? Is that what you were thinking?
Or are you thinking of it as part of the diminished run with some different color notes in there?
Anyways, GREAT video!! I'm guessing the mystery chord is meant to be Eb13 but would love to know if you had different thinking for it!
So I played IV chord (R M3 b7 9 5th) then b7 M3 13 R.. I learned that chord from my jazz guitar lesson. I took jazz guitar lessons for two years. Without those lessons, many things I did not know! Organ sounding chord to me. No root! b7 bottom then M3 13 Root! Root is the top note! Thank you so much!

Sorry Tomo, but on this I‘m not with you. There is absolutely no reason to get a metronome anymore. On the contrary. It‘s no fun to listen to that dull click all the time. It‘s much better to get some kind of drum machine or drum app. Absolutely no one uses a metronome on stage and only dumb old studio musicians use a click track in the studio. But everyone plays to backing tracks or live musicians or at least drum apps or machines - even when practicing. Sooo… 😁
And while we‘re at it: Before thinking of getting an expensive metronome, it may be a much better idea to get a looper. A lot of loopers - even the basic ones - have a drum function of some kind. The Boss loopers for instance have everything you need and even a metronome function for all those old geezers. 😁
Thanks for sharing. Drum machine gives you a lot of specific feel. I just want a metronome to help me in time. I will work on my time feel and my grooves in styles. This is all for practicing! I love to work hard and harder! That's all!
I think you are thinking more performance & entertainment.
i do believe that if you can get a metronome to groove with you, then you can get any drummer to do so. but not the other way around, so practicing with a metronome helps get the perfection you're seeking and jam with any time your bandmates want to play.
Mr Richard pay attention to tomo! by now know that if the geezers are doing it and having fun with it till this day then you just may be one who's not so sure. Metronome is simplicity! Drum loop pattern is not simple, too much distraction, you know. You have good taste, i know, but everybody has good tastes its individual, don't worry, don't compare, don't judge before you hear.
