    Thank you for posting this project. Will work great as gifts for upcoming holidays. I'm curious about the nice details on lids. You mentioned you did them on the band saw but perhaps you can make another video where you illustrate that in more detail. I really enjoy your content. Thank you again.

    You can find small sponge pieces in the makeup area of the dollar store, that are used for applying makeup and they are way cheaper than cutting down a large foam sheet. These are denser than regular sponges and can be re-used a couple of times before disposing of them if it is a water-based paint or sealer. I use them for small projects and work out perfectly. If you prefer a handle, you can clip the sponge between a close pin for an instant paintbrush. Also, if you like using these sponges, you can find them in all different sizes and densities through wholesales. A friend makes jewelry boxes and has been using these for years to apply stain and wip on poly.

      Great idea I have a bunch of those laying around since I only tend to paint wood and hardly my face lol but I've found lots of my "girly" tools have worked excellent for my crafting projects ❤

    would a sanding pen help you with those precision corners for the lid and the bottom of the box, I mean if you're not using one already?

    For folks that don't have your steady hand drawing curves (or for those times you're too shaky from excess coffee.... :^D ) may I recommend a set of French Curves. Old stand by for draftsman. Also handy if you wish to repeat a curve (or try to copy one from a different project or item as you can mark on them). That lid turned out really nice. I'm wondering if the larger box would have looked better to your eye if all the sides were the same width.

    • @woodworkingwithSkyler
      @woodworkingwithSkyler  Рік тому +1

      Maybe. Not sure. But something its not right about the dimensions it has now. My curves were not smooth either. Thanks for the tip. Just ordered some.

    Nice job! With the banding on the lid, I have found that a wider band saw blade allows you to produce smoother curves because you can't turn as sharply. 3/8" works perfect for me. Might give that a try

    I noticed with this video that your takes are long & continuous compared to many other UA-camrs. Compliments to your self-confidence and articulateness in describing your work as it progresses.
    And you explained the banding effect on top of the bigger box very clearly; it is much simpler than one would imagine.

    The reason you had the gaps in the corners was using the router bit to mortise the box and the table saw on the bottom. The table saw made corners that came to a sharp point and the router bit mane a rounded corner. Cut the mortise on the box with the table saw before assembly.

    That's REALLY pretty. I've still got the bits from the last time you did a Bird's Mouth joinery vid...a couple months ago maybe? But of course I "got busy" and haven't used them yet.

  • @peterpepelehew6283

    Is there a trick to the thickness of the board and the depth of the router bit to get the sides to align?

  • @jvmiller1995
    @jvmiller1995 Рік тому

    Very nice job. I also love to see women get into this mazing craft. You have some nice tools too. on the lid of the box you can use a router with a 3/4 straight bit. Set the depth to 3/8 or what you want and then the fence to how far you need to clear the walls of the box. If needed you can do a sacrificial fence on a router as well. But very nice job. This is my first time on your channel. Subbed and liked. Keep up the good work. I will be getting a set of those bits. I have seen them but never used or how they work.

    • @woodworkingwithSkyler

    Only you would know that the bottom is filled so you should consider selling them if you had the need to. That being said, I turn bowls and have never sold any only given them away, but I am retired so time is cheap. Nice work though, I am sure owners of them would get lots of pleasure.😊.

    Is there a setup block for the bits or do you need to do a trial run on scraps?

    • @woodworkingwithSkyler
      @woodworkingwithSkyler  Рік тому

      Yes, I use the set up block. One bit its set perfectly, I run it on a board and then keep that board as a setup block for next time I use that thickness material

  • @marvinhunger8169

    I think you would find that you would like a tape dispenser instead of using 2 hands to tear off a piece of tape. I also like using a silicone brush to apply the glue. Dry glue peels off it easily.

    Little imperfections makes human to interesting human and a little boxes to art.
    Half of the work of a craftsman/-lady is „deleting“ mistakes which only she/he sees 😂.
    I even believe that some of the biggest & most expensive pieces of art are just the result of a clever marketing.
    So keep on, trust yourself & sell those super nice boxes,
    …or not: Just if you don’t like compliments! (What I need to warn you, cause this will happen!)
