How to Change Coolant

  • The name antifreeze leads people to believe that it's only job is to lower the freezing point of the coolant in your engine. In fact, it also raises the boiling point and prevents corrosion of waterways in your engine's cylinder-head and block. If your vehicle's cooling system only contained water, you would quickly run the risk of damaging the internal parts of the engine, which would lead to premature component wear. I think you will agree antifreeze is important! It should be renewed every two years and at the start of winter, you should test the strength of the antifreeze in the cooling system.

To change the coolant, the whole system needs to be drained off and flushed with water to get all the old coolant mix out.
When I say system, I refer to the radiator, all pipes, the engine block, the header tank and the heater matrix.
On new fill, about 0.5L of water in to start with, just in case you've left a hose off/loose!

Per the video, it wasn’t full concentration but rather a mixture with water. Normally use 50-50 distilled water and appropriate coolant (G12 spec for VW)

Most come premixed ratio ready too use. You just make sure it’s the correct type for your vehicle. A wrong type may destroy your caskets.

Good video but need to do some more steps. This replaced at best 50% of the old coolant since the engine block coolant was not drained. To do a more thorough job replace with distilled water over 4-5 drains/cycles. Then find out what the total capacity is and how much water you are draining during the drains to determine the final 100% coolant amount to fill with. Assumption here is that the engine block area will have 100% distilled water after 4-5 drains and then you add 100% coolant to get to the 50/50 mixture (based on total capacity and amount being drained of course) you want. Thanks!

well, to save money you better put tap water in it, for the flushing procedure. Also getting the water heated up by driving the car around with the water pump running will really help flushing it. For such a short period the tap water won't hurt the engine. Then put new coolant and distilled water in it.

How about emptying the old coolant in the heater by switching the ignition on and turning the heater control to hot position when draining old coolant. Its a surprising omission on an otherwise good production.

As far as I know, in this engine (VAG 1.8 20V Gasoline) you should refill coolant as follows:
    - slacken the clip and withdraw the heater unit supply hose from its bulkhead stub until the bleed hole is open,
    - detach the expansion tank and rise it up about 10cm over the engine,
    - slowly pour coolant until it starts to run from the hole in heater hose,
    - squeeze the hoses to free trapped air,
    - attach expansion tank as normal,
    - fill the coolant to the maximum level,
    - run the engine until it heats to working level (10 minutes to make sure that the thermostat was opened),
    - let it cool and check the coolant level again.

What do you think about changing over dexcool to regular coolant? I have an 05 Buick Century, and dexcool is not good for the head gasket in that particular year, make, model, but that's the original coolant that the car comes with. It's a defect that has since been fixed in newer models, but I have the older model and I'm looking to change it out completely.

hope you can help me my car has never gave me any trouble until, two days ago as, I looked at the Garage I noticed my gauge had started to go from the sweet spot, a 16th of an inch about, I didn't know what the story was then after I drove it for a bit longer I could see water starting to drip on the driver's side in front of the wheel Arch, how do I know whether this is my pump or whether it is simply a leaking hose, know I am going to get checked out, but I would just like an answer for this so some mechanic doesn't turn to me, your pump is gone, Iol I was thinking to myself if the pump was gone then it shouldn't build up the pressure, to push the water out of ,hopefully loose hose or something. can you give me any ideas or suggestions ways of knowing if it is a water pump, as opposed to just A leek.
