So when doing subtraction with the nines' complement of the subtrahend and the minuend ≥ subtrahend, we get X + 10^n - 1 - Y = X - Y + b^n - 1. Therefore, you always drop the leading one from the carry during addition (b^2) and add one. That leaves us with the difference (X - Y). In your first problem... 95 - 9 = ? We add 95 to the nines' complement of 9, which is 90 (remember that you have two-digit numbers here). That gives 185. Subtract 100 (10^2) and add one... giving 86. In cases where you use the nines' complement of the subtrahend and the minuend is < the subtrahend we get X + 10^n - Y = b^n - 1 - (X - Y) because the difference is negative. Therefore, the result is the nines' complement of the difference. In your example 90 - 99 = ? We add 90 to the nine's complement of 99 (zero!) to get 90. The answer is the nines' complement of 90 which is 9. Now remember that we have a negative result, so the final answer is -9.
