After my 5th time listening to it, I get it. I knew it had good potential at first listen, but now I get it. I imagine it’s like a teaser for the album, almost like the beginning of rush 2112
Oh, I will let you know what I think. I think I'm part of the middle group of people saying that their progstuff is good too. But, like you were saying, there were missing some things. Mostly the musical vibe and of course the growls (I really shed a tiny little tear when I first heard the growl was back). This album I expect it's going to be the more proggy variation of Watershed. This song already brought us the perfect blend of the music from ICV in combination with shreds of Watershed together with the beautiful cleans and growls of Mikael. This is going to be such a blast of an album, I suppose. Anyway, cheers Hedgy 🍺 And never say never again when it comes to that Mikael never will growl again. (I had the same assumption). Glad we were wrong about that.
I'm exactly like you. Opeth was my favorite band for over 20 years, even during the past four albums. The first song I heard by them was "Bleak" in 2001. The death/prog was epic and when they decided to go full prog, I was sad. Totally respected their decision, and musically still top shelf stuff. Before I knew about any new album coming out, I decided to get tickets to see them in October. I haven't lost count - this will be my 10th time. Well, now hearing this, my excitement level has soared. As an FYI, my favorite band is now Lovebites and has been for a few years. No matter what Opeth does from this point forward, they will always be my 2nd favorite artist ever, because Lovebites just checks off every box for me.
What I've always loved about Mikael's growls is that they're glorious but still understandable. Fun thing I noticed, if you turn on the CC on this video you actually get subtitles on the growly stuff... And on the cleans it says [music] ... Even YT knows 😂
I feel the same exact way about Opeth. They played such a huge part of my music journey and life. They could do no wrong. They also lost me at Heritage and I certainly tried with that album. I honestly think I rather enjoyed parts of it... but the Opeth of My Arms, where Mike forged through the single note swedish thing at the time, and created an insane style all his and their own with Peter. So, between My arms and Watershed, they were my number 1. I"m not sure how I feel about this track yet.
I get what your saying , when heritage came out I too had second thoughts and kept listening too it over and over. I then realized it's still very heavy and gloomy music with lighter vocals and that all said, They are brilliant musicians and I dont expect anything less from this album!!!!!!
How comes nobody in the English speaking world seems to know the symbol for "paragraph"?! It's super common in contracts and - guess what - testaments.
It's not "S 1", the symbol is the "section" sign and it's used in documents that are generally legal in nature. Which absolutely fits with the title of the album. As far as how this song sounds...it's not quite their old sound, but it's somewhat similar to Watershed and Ghost Reveries in some ways. It's mainly just their "modern" style, but with growls. Which I'm actually fine with, because Heritage through their last album bored me to tears. The music was "fine", but it wasn't heavy enough (another reason I never listen to Damnation). Never thought they would return the growls, but I'm glad they have. It's the first Opeth album I'm actually looking forward to since Watershed. Also, a heads up for those that don't know (or have not even heard of the band), Anciients has a new album releasing in September after an eight year wait. If you don't know who they are, they are basically the band that picked up the torch Opeth dropped and sound like a mix of Opeth, Mastodon and Tool at times. Their Voice of the Void album is phenomenal. The growls on it are the best outside of Akerfeldt's.
Opeth fans who love all their directions and phases are not wrong, because being their fan means generally loving music, being able to recognize quality and listen objectively to what the author wanted to express. I fell in love with them with Heritage and In Cauda Venenum, I only listened later older albums and I really loved them all. Music for me is not something that stays the same, because a person also changes with the years, even in a certain period he has different moods and with that in mind he can choose which album he will listen. I completely understand what you're saying, but I really don't see the point of those who say so much "they lost me" Just listen to what you like, who cares. Opeth will always be Opeth because of specific things: Mikael's bipolar song structure, quality vocals and others members, regardless of genre.
That Opeth was very Opethy. I'll be all over that when the album comes out. What radio station plays a radio edit Opeth song? I had this effect with Rush at some point.

I bought Heritage when it came out and was thoroughly disappointed, if I wanted prog stuff I'd have gone for literally any other amazing prog band, I wanted Opeth so naturally was a bit miffed. They're playing at Bloodstock this weekend, and the release of this radio edit has me all excited in the feels

Some music groups do go whatevery over the years and aren't as good twards so whatevery. :-) I can "see" that with you and Opeth since it isn't the good main Opeth anymore. I know that happens with music groups. Someone once said it's like the music group is in a fish bowl: making their own good material without the outside getting in the way changing them. For me, Opeth are back... ish. As if they just called in for the first time in ages on their way somewhere else but they aren't stopping for long. This song seems like a step in the right direction but it just sounds like stuff they've done before only not as good. There was once a time when I thought Mikael couldn't make a bad song if he tried. He proved me wrong with Heritage though which was absolute garbage. Everything they've done since has been slightly better but the kind of thing I listened to once or twice then forgot about. I'm hopeful that the rest of this new album will be some kind of return to form but this hasn't convinced me at all. It's just... all right.
Top Track. I'm meh on the growing, it's neither here or there for me, I really missed their metal edged sound which went away after watershed (of which this has vibes). I'd love to hear them do the metal edged stuff but with no growling.
I think a better word would be 'indelibly'... but the significance of that is currently minimal. I have a mixed relationship with Opeth. I think the 'progginess' never really caught my attention. I do have a few of their albums but, l don't think I ever got through an entire album. I might have to dig them out again and give them another spin. Cheers Hedgy.

I think the growling returning was inevitable. I saw them live a couple of times in the last 5 years, and they didn't play anything past 2011.
