As America’s population grows so does their growing need for fresh water. The shrinking aquifers beneath The Great Plains now require deeper and deeper wells with more powerful pumps to bring water to the surface to grow crops to feed a hungry nation. Eyes now turn to The Great Lakes where the diversions have already silently began. The treaty with the City of Chicago allows 10,000 cubic feet per second of fresh water to be taken. Chicago violates their quota every minute without penalties. We’ve learned nothing from The Aral Sea disaster.

I think the questions to ask is "How long has the Aral Sea existed?""What checks and balances were in to measure by It's existence and are now unchecked and unbalanced? Not just in relation to humanity but all species as a whole? To say that "All is better without the Aral Sea than they were with the Aral Sea", is in my mind like saying,"I know that the earth is flat because everytime I put a hand ful of ants on my kids basketball they all fall off especially when I spin it. So why are we not flying off in all directions.Damn good thing that the earth is flat!"
To think that humans have caused a whole sea to dissapear should scare the shit out of any who hear of it.History has shown that everytime Humanity has attempted to alter the Earth/Enviroment in any large scale way ,, in the long run there have been large prices to pay .Humanity has not yet learned the definition of "The long run" Our "Great great great Grand Children" might learn it though. I think that I will just put my head between my knees and kiss my ass goodbye or rather I would but I'm getting old and stiff so I'll just leave it on my pillow and go back to sleep.

john biggins Horse radish. The fact of the matter is, inland salt seas like the Aral, come and go on a geologically regular basis. If it’s not the result of mismanagement of a morally bankrupt socialist system, it’ll be by natural means. And, whether you like it or not, “man” is just as much a part of nature as are large bodies of water, Lion Seal cubs, Palm leaves and sand- although some humans are apparently more like hot sulphurous gas than others because as of this moment the Aral Sea is halfway to making a full recovery- unless of course you object because its recovery is orchestrated by “man”. I mean, if you’re sincerely repulsed at the thought of man contaminating the purity of nature, do something pro- active instead of wasting band width with fashionable but banal proclamations of species hatred.

    • @WJack97224

@@jigminidup2406, The confusion between lake and sea stems from the errors of men who named them and they lacked a quantified definition. I check Wikipedia and found some info that doesn't help. To me a lake is a body of fresh water that has an outlet to a stream or river which then leads to the oceans. A sea is a body of salt water. The article says that some lakes can be salty due to the mineral nature of the soils so then those "lakes" are not fresh water and that suggests that a heirarchy of water bodies might be in need of some revampment so as to have a class of lakes that are saltwater but do have an outlet to the oceans.
What is a Lake? ref: www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-lake-and-vs-sea/
Lake is fresh water surrounded by land. The water in a lake is still while a river is always flowing. Sometimes the water can be saline depending upon the geology of the surrounding and underlying terrain. Calling seas as water bodies containing salt water does not solve confusion as there are lakes with salt water, and there are seas with fresh water. There are seas that are smaller than some huge lakes of the world. To understand these anomalies, one must keep in mind that lakes are not permanent water bodies. They form, reach maturity and die. The confusion between lake and sea also arises because of the way some of the water bodies were named in earlier times by their explorers. Dead Sea and Caspian Sea are not exactly seas but lakes, but they are known as seas in the world. May be the huge size of Caspian Sea confused people and they preferred to call this lake a sea. It is enclosed by land on all sides, which is a distinguishing characteristic of a lake. Also, it has no connection to an ocean whatsoever which makes it a perfect lake. [I disagree with calling Caspian See and the Dead Sea lakes. And I disagree with calling The Great Salt Lake in Utah a lake. - JW]
      What is a Sea?
Sea is a part of the ocean that is partly surrounded by land, and has salty water. Oceans are bigger and have no identifiable boundaries. There are 4 oceans in the world but 108 seas. Seas are permanent on the geological time scale. On the other hand, some seas get cut off with the feeding ocean and with continuing fresh water getting added from rivers and other sources, salinity goes down, so much so that they contain freshwater in the last. Black Sea in this connection is one example, which has alternated between salt water body and fresh water body over geological time scale. [but the Caspian Sea and the Aral Sea and the Dead Sea are completely surrounded by land and have no outlet to the oceans - JW]

@@WJack97224 Nice research. But I think there is more to it than just the definition. While the ancient people thought it to be a sea or ocean due to its vastness, the term have been carried on till date due to my aforementioned political reasons. This has even been discussed in the United Nations but it was decided to be called a sea rather than a lake which it actual was.
The reason being, since it's called a sea all countries surrounding it gets equal proportion of the area proportional to its area stretching the sea.
Now if it's a lake, the countries get smaller proportion due to international water laws. This will create a vast space of international water space in the middle which all countries will try to claim for its fishing and oil extraction rights. Nobody wants that coz it will be a cause of another international war zone. For this reason, it was decided not to alter the term and carry forward as per the mistakes of ancient explorers. This is just my view.
That said, again, this is just my view and I have been wrong many times before. Cheers dude.

I kept coming across the "Oxus" and "Jaxates" rivers in historical works, and didn't know what they were, so ended up here.
I know a lot has changed since then. This part of the world could be better known by the likes of me in Londonistan, not least because it is profoundly beautiful.

So it's not okay when humans drain lakes but if it happens naturally it's fine.? The Aral Sea wasn't always there and neither were the Great Lakes. I don't understand how it's an environmental disaster just because humans decide to reroute water, there would be no complaints about "environmental disaster" if it happened naturally.

Because nature has a special knack for certain things that man will never understand. Man is blinded by money and control, nature isnt blinded by anything.

The Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers naturally filled up the Aral Sea from glaciers in the Tian Shan mountains. The Aral Sea would've taken hundreds, maybe even thousands of years to dry up if it did naturally. When the Soviets decided to reroute the water during Stalin's rule, this sped up the process incredibly. Not even a century later the Sea is only a fraction to what it is now because of people tampering with the rivers.

    • @robertpreskop4425

@Livin Vidz no you are the one who is not very bright. Draining the Aral Sea was immoral and an environmental disaster that did more harm than good and has made that region drier and more arid. Those irrigation canals needed to be restricted from taking all the fresh water out both major rivers. Growing water intense crops like rice and cotton should not be permitted in arid regions like this basin in Asia. The Aral Sea was an abundant source of food and fresh water for the people in its immediate vicinity. You need to wake up and realize that modern man was wrong for draining the Aral Sea's water sources. There was no legitimate need for them to steal all that water. You cant eat cotton and it is a lousy uncomfortable fabric anyways. They could have taken only half the fresh water to irrigate and still have vital agriculture providing that they dont grow water intense crops like cotton and rice which are not meant to be grown in both arid and semiarid regions in the first place.

The Aral sea was a mistake of nature. It was a huge evaporation puddle in the desert. Why not use the water for farming. The Soviet planners knews they were draining the lake. The fate of the lake was decided in the 40s and 50s. Everything that came afterwards was not a surprise.

Wrong... The aral sea provided thousands of jobs and livelyhood in the fishing industry. They had processing plants, harbors and fishing vessels, people had good lives bc of the sea.
