I’m not a pro. I would never be as successful in music as Rico Blanco but when something sucks then it sucks. I don’t need to be a movie director to call out if some movies suck.
finally I found a reaction video for this solo. Since I saw many comments that the solo is still ok. but for me I definitely heard something wrong in the solo. something like a note is not part of the family hehhe.
He made a mistake. Simple as that. It would have ended there but instead it had gone viral because the so-called “pros” tried to justify it and called everyone else “uneducated”.

I always consider music as a form of self expression there’s no right or wrong in it.. having said that i agree with your opinion on this..I don’t know why he went so hard on emphasizing the minor tonality(there’s little to no hint of jazz sound in there contrary to what his fans say it is).. we have this concept of tension and resolve when it comes to guitar playing.. him starting off with that minor passing note felt so awkward(tension).. not saying its wrong but instead of making it a unique solo for me it felt forced that he is pushing that minor/out of the box narrative.. idk if it would sound better but C lydian scale would have probably worked since C Lydian is very open ended and a relative scale to(Gmaj) so you can resolve it back to the root during the solo section..
i guess he went on this solo improvising idk if you noticed.. but there is this one section when he went for a chromatic run it felt like he’s on a slight panic trying to look for a way to resolve the solo back in Key.. i respect the solo idea.. but could he have executed it better? absoultely yes.. he can work on it just improve/tweak some note choices.. its hard to perform on a stage with a crowd so respect to him for taking on the challenge..
He made a mistake. I don't think he meant to hit those notes. You can see that his left hand jerked. It was awful sounding. Everybody makes mistakes and Rico did not even need to explain himself or bring it up. The problem is that his rabid fans and these so-called "experts" tried to justify his mistakes and called everyone who disagrees with them as "uneducated".
Theory is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to make ice cream out of it. As they say, if it sounds good then it is good. This was just bad and no amount of music theory explanation will make it better.
@@dtmateo i agree.. some of his fans tries to justify that the solo is complicated because of the minor key but that is not the case here.. i saw some other angle of the solo you can clearly see he is shaky on his fretting hand and stiff on his picking hand definitely a recipe for disaster.. I do like your tomato analogy lol..
yes, if it is a form of expression, you can see it through his face while he is doing the solo.

Solo different from the original done by Perf, Rico doesn't know what hes doing.
the solo is not good. the end! period. when I was watching and hearing it, medyo off yung ibang nota sa solo compare mo sa chord progression. hindi po ako expert pero, mahirap i justify yun eh. he is a good composer, but he wants to make it sound different from what perf originally recorded.
nsanay ka lng kay perf. oo perf is good. pero kanina napanuod ko sya live sa festival mall alabang manila, ok yung solo nya at npaka melodic.
minsan ok solo nya. Minsan mali mali. Yung viral video nya sobrang mali.
mga mababa lang yung knowledge sa music yung napapangitan dito sa areglo ni Rico. he's more of a composer and artist unlike kay perf na purely gitarista. hindi takot si Rico mag experiment. Kung manonood pa kayo ng ibang mas certified na gitarista na kalevel ni Perf na mas naclarify yung lead ni Rico, makikita nyo yung vision na gustong gawin ni Rico e. Sympre, bilang hindi naman talaga gitarista, kakabahan din talaga si Rico lalo na iba yung areglo nya sa original 214. may vision, hindi lang talaga na execute ni Rico ng maayos. I suggest panoorin nyo yung paglilinis na ginawa ni Alvin De Leon sa areglo ni Rico, makikita nyo na may vision si Rico, sadyang kinabahan as not being a certified guitarist, pero may vision and expression bilang musikero at artist. Jusq di naman pagalingan ang pagtugtog, mga beginner lang magiisip na pagalingan ang pagtugtog. Music is expression. And if expression lang naman ang usapan, nagawa din ni Perf yun sa original expression nya ng 214 solo, so hindi ba pwedeng iexpress ni Rico yung sakanya specially na sya ang original composer nun? second, if pagalingan lang as totality, sabi nga ng kanta ng parokya ni edgar sa The Yes Yes Show, "At ilan na ba talagang nagawa mong kanta?" So outside first album ng Rivermaya, ilan na ba yung kantang ginawa ni Perf na naghit or even kanta na nagcontribute sya na naghit? Jusme, Rico is Rico. Di nalaos even outside Rivermaya. stop the crap. Gitarista lang si Perf and it ends there. Kahit pumalpak si Rico a million times, that doesnt diminish his song writing and vision.
Nobody criticised Rico for his song writing; otherwise fans would have been criticising the song 214 itself. What’s absolutely WRONG is for these “experts” to JUSTIFY an absolute failure of a guitar solo. For the record I am not criticising Rico. I am criticising those who justified his botched guitar solo.
But then, I have also watched his other performances of the song. You can see that he is trying too hard to be different from the original solo. While that is appreciated, this leads to inconsistent and on-the-spot improvisation which results in inferior note choices, and in this particular case, just pure and simple mistake. Musicians make mistakes. The best move is just to forget about it but instead the experts were grasping at straws to justify it.
I saw Alvin de Leon’s break down of the solo. The mistakes not only sounded terrible but the tabs made them visible as well. Mr. de Leon made a fool of himself instead of helping Mr. Blanco.
