Dan Marino turned 30 years old on this day! This was also Marino's final game in Detroit, as he played only twice there with the first being in 1985. The other two times in Miami in 1994 and 1997. He split against them 2-2, losing the first two games on the road and winning the last two at home.
My first Lions game. Also my first Fins game. Dan Marino's 30th birthday. Shula going for #300. Lions delayed that celebration. Great goalline stand in the 4th. Seats were right behind the band over the tunnel.
Thank you for downloading this video, this game! If you have anymore games of the #DetroitLions from the 1991 NFL Season, your time and hard work is more than appreciated! 👍
If Sanders had a fullback and normal pro set offense from his rookie year till his retirement he would have had over 20,000 rushing yards, over 200 rushing touchdowns and 2-3 2000 year season and one 2500 yard season. Just look what he did when Ross took over and got rid of the run and shoot
Their starting nose tackle, Jerry Ball, couldn't play in the NFC championship game due to injury. Also one of their best pass rushers (Robert Porcher?) was out.
Charlie Jones says nothing from 2:05:33 to 2:07:42 on the last two plays of the decisive goal-line stand by the Lions - just lets Christensen set the table and the crowd reaction tell the story. Brilliant presentation style that he was known for - and that more announcers today ought to take lessons from.
I miss when announcers were super professional and not trying to spit corny catch phrases trying to be stars. Play by play guys were all trained to stay silent in big game moments, especially when the crowd was super loud. I remember the '86 WS when I was really young. On the last strike out Vin Scully simply said "Got em" and then went silent. It really helped the viewer at home feel the intensity of the moment.
I agree Todd Christensen rocked. That Tony Roma absolutely sucks Jim Nance also horrible a golf announcer at best. The game kinda sucks now unlikable punks worried about themselves only and making money no loyalty to teams why should we care about them.
Marino got off to a very slow start in '91 but. by end of season was once again performing like one of the GOATS, narrowly missing the playoffs while carrying another bad Dolphins team by himself.
I didn't know Denzel Washington was our starting QB in 1991. Lol😄😁Rodney Peete got hurt somewhere in the season and Eric Kramer came in to replace him. I miss the Silverdome🏈🏈

yeah i know my bears got inside the 10-20 like 5x that year and came up with 6 pts at the silverdome.... i cant remember who won the division i think we lost to lions actally but lions&bears both made the playoffs nobody could beat the skins in 91' anyway

@@mangrove Yep - just like Bob Cole on Hockey Night in Canada! Charlie Jones had a great voice. I enjoyed his commentary. He didn't do many Detroit Lions games because of the NBC/AFC thing. If it was some combination of Raiders/Broncos/Seahawks/Chargers at 4 PM --- that was almost always Charlie Jones!
Is it me that notices that just about all the great coaches at one point or another started off with the Detroit Lions? Of course this is before the losing history began. There's something to be said about. It's like a switch went off.
Shula was an Lions assistant from 1960-62. At that time the Lions were one of the league's better teams. William Clay Ford purchased the team in 1964 and it was all downhill from there.
Kind of his trademark. Part of the reason he was my favorite Dolphin player (besides DM) all time. Skills and style! Ray Crockett (S #39) from the Lions also did the shades thing but I remember MC being one of the first to popularize it. Earliest instance I know of Mark Clayton doing so was '86.

Damn. Mark Higgs and Sammy Smith were shit running backs. Could never explode and get between the blocks in time. Miami's offensive line was good. The running backs were the problem. Unfortunately for Marino, it was like this his whole career.

How the Lion's couldn't win a SB with that team is beyond me. But then again I'm a browns fan and suffered from 1985-1992

Rodney Peete was horrible. Can't believe they tried to make it work with him for as many seasons as they did. Poor Barry.

Smilin’ Rodney Peete 😃
Ironically Rodney Peete would blown the Lions out in the playoffs in 1995 as an Eagle
