Audemars Piguet Code 11.59 - A Watch Industry Controversy | Watchfinder & Co.

  • If you’re familiar with the Swiss watch industry, you’ll know that when a brand-particularly a big, old traditional one-does something small, it’s a pretty big deal. So when a brand does something big, its positively monumental. At the beginning of 2019, Audemars Piguet did something big by releasing the Code 11.59, with the intention of ending its reliance on the iconic Royal Oak. The response, however, was not quite the one they expected.

Main reason I don't think anybody is going to buy Code 11.59 is it doesn't look iconic. Royal oak looked so different when it came and anybody can tell its royal oak because of its distinct iconic design. This however looks super mainstream like any other watch. Also I find dial's look cheap

    Let's be honest here:
    - movement is top notch
    - case is among the best we've seen (hi-tech, complicated shaped)
    - the domed/carved glass is also a thing of beauty
The things that ruins it are:
    - indices and the numbers
    - the hands are so so plain and boring
    - AP logo also looks cheap
These can be fixed easily, so the next versions might look a lot better.

I kinda disagree.. these high end brands have done it before. The Royal Oak is one, but nautilus was unpopular when it launched. So was the aquanaut. Best example might be the Rolex Daytona. They were given away for free when you bought a Rolex once and look at them now. Unpopular pieces make rare once...

    • @centrallyintelligentagency
      @centrallyintelligentagency 4 роки тому +1

Brad Le Brad Le I see the point about the Neptune - sure. The moonphase version of it is very pretty, however. The Franck Muller started popular as you conceded - so that point is relatively moot. The Hallucination may not be visually appealing, but I doubt that that was the problem. It’s sitting at $55,000,000 which I would be inclined to call prohibitive. An 11.59 is not. Also, it’s the Panerai Brooklyn Bridge - and it was set to be a scandal. Priced lower than a 005 and with a terrible movement, of course it was bound to fail - not a great example. This 11.59 is disregarded for no compelling reason I have yet to hear - it is technically a marvel, and it insanely elegant in the minute repeater & perpetual calendar guise, but my favourite is the standard time-only in black and rose gold.
A final counter to any opposition - until you have genuinely handled the piece and can appropriately speak to that experience, you have no business in judging the watch as bad, trash, or bound to be a flop. You haven’t formed an evidence based argument for why the watch is bad. Personally, I thought I would despise the Nautilus, since it was steel (for that price) and I thought it was garbage prior to handling it. Completely contrary to my ignorant opinion, it felt immensely qualitative and had a beautiful shine to its components and a very pleasant heft - not to mention the movement.

Second, some elements of the dial look incredibly cheap, like the indices, hands and even AP logo. And third - as much as I don't like Royal Oak, its design really turned the things around back in the day. Gerald Genta was a genius, and the guy that imagined 11.59 - well, not so much. Even the collection name is just plain stupid, millennial-friendly nonsense. Generally love your videos but this one comes off very poorly. Hurts your credibility more than a little bit imo. It appears like you are making excuses for AP and dismissing the naysayers (in a gentle manner granted.) Claiming people can't make genuine buying decisions based on pictures and a limited handling of the watch defies reality; people regularly make buying decisions in exactly that same manner. If Watchfinder will let me "test drive" a watch for a couple of weeks so I can make a buying decision you consider informed then please let me know. That would be truly fantastic.

This watch is a beauty, and I'd love to own it. With that said, had I not watched the video on the Grand Seiko Snowflake and the Lange Saxonia Thin, I would probably have thought the AP faultless. But after seeing the beautiful finishing of the Grand Seiko and the Lange, my eye started seeing fine details on the AP that didn't quite reach the same level of finish at the other two. The hands, there were some fine specks along the edges that looked like tiny gouges (which would only show up under magnification, but still). Then reversing the watch, I was seeing the same kind of tiny imperfections on a number of the parts. Part of this results from the brushed surface of many parts, the tiny groves creating a break along the edges. Then there were the gears. Look at the Lange in particular. The teeth of the gears were polished! That tiny attention to detail elevates the Lange to another level. Same with the beveled edges of the movement, no specks or other imperfections of any kind under the magnification of the video. The Audemars is an expensive luxury watch, but the Lange really is on top of its game. Still, a beautiful watch though.

"Outrageous" and "simplicity" aren't interchangeable. See, the RO might have been outrageous when it came out, but it's not anymore. Launching a watch that looks like an entry-level Maurice Lacroix is a move that doesn't make sense for anyone, least of all AP buyers. It's a boring watch. Fin.

Well done on finishing this review with the almost subliminal suggestion that the Code 11 is somehow layered and mysterious and will perhaps become the choice of those with subtle minds and refined tastes. I suspect you’ll have quite a few of these pieces second-hand which you’ll need to shift as best you can over the next coup,e of years, so a bit of marketing groundwork now won’t go amiss.

8.58 in the presentation says it all.... "I'm a firm believer in your opinion being own!" We all reflect our own biases and thoughts. I find the 11.59 to be absolutely stunning. I am reminded of a very wise friend who states "It's sophistication is hidden in its simplicity". I read and respect everyone's opinions
on this channel - but should I have the money I would buy this watch to go alongside GS Spring Drive, Omega DV Centre Tourbillon, Kobold LSD. All - in my humble opinion, stunning in their own right. Another wonderful presentation Watchfinder & Co, and thought provoking. Maybe you'll change your mind too! The sophistication is hidden in the simplicity!

A lot of people say that the dial is too simple. I disagree, there's a lot going inside of it, and the proportion of the components inside the dial is the main culprit of somewhat disastrous execution. However, looking it at in flesh makes a lot of a difference.

The ONLY valid conclusion here is this: Watchfinder has some Code 11.59 models in stock and wants to unload them at top dollar. Watchfinder is NOT an impartial review site. Their mission is to sell watches in the grey market and add to the bottom line of their new parent, Richemont.

The case is amazing, the dials for the most are great with the lacquer. The movements are top notch and the sapphire is beautiful. The problem is the hands and the indicies. Fortunately that's the easiest part to change. This with some minor adjustment is a future classic. Their only watch and the perpetual calendar versions of this watch shows what's possible.

I actually like the look of the 1159 and think it would be a nice watch in the metal. I think the immense dislike of the watch comes from how they advertised and teased the watch before it's release. With statements like "the most revolutionary watch in the industry since the royal Oak" (I may have paraphrased slightly) . I think if it had purely been released as a new collection to the brand without the bold statements then it would have been received better. The release created a lot of controversy among the collectors and now we are nearly a year since it was launched, we are still talking about it. Looks like AP won.

The code 11.59 story really started with the perpetual calendar where the internal bezel, dial language came together and is pure beauty. Unfortunately moving down the line to fulfill sale to the selective masses really diluted the dna. Maybe the goal here is to not follow the traditional watch brand approach of launching a lot of variations for one line but rather exercise restraint and allow the line to evolve over several years. Why is there a need to fulfill a different purpose watch for the 11.59 concept? Its a tail of marketing driving the concept rather then the concept driving the marketing. The watch presented here is probably the worst version with the case design being sufficient enough to carry the entire package when in fact as you noted the dial is probably the most important trait. The numerals seem to fit a watch designed by Porsche.
In any case keep up the awesome reviews! Ur one of the best

The 1159's lugs remind me of AP's capital letter **A**
The RO was a futuristic take on a tired design in watchmaking.
Everyone began designing angular cases, attractive and fresh in design at the time.
The 1159 seems more of a throwback, one that I do welcome.
It manages to accomplish many aspects of histrorical design, quite busy.
Unfortunately, these details aren't as striking from a distance
as the RO's were upon its release.
In a 38mm case and no date, this would be perfect.
    As always, Thank you!

The difference between the Royal Oak when it was presented and this 11.59 is clear. The R.O. was a totally new kind of design (with Zenith Defy family) made by Genta, it was a revolution on its own. This is just a mixture of already existing designs. We can see a bit of Polaris and fashion watches mixed together
