This video is WAAAAAAAAAY more necessary than the Internet currently realizes. Too bad many musicians won't admit it out of embarrassment, purist bs, etc.
That's the whole reason I clicked on this video. Just saw video of me playing and I criticized myself hard. I knew I needed some tips. This video is awesome
This is very good perfromance advice BUT, ONLY if you've practiced the music and you know your shit COLD! If you don't, it's better for you to stay stationary and concentrate on playing your notes! That said, you shouldn't even be up there giging UNTIL you and your bandmates know your shit cold!
i’m a young guitarist and im up for one of my first ever shows in december, i’ve been practicing for a while but your video really helps! as an introverted person you are truly a big help.
Funny, but when I clicked on this, I thought it was gonna be totally ridiculous...but it's actually spot on. I know a few bandmates I'm gonna show this to.
There needs to be more instruction like this. You take these ideas and run with them, make it your own things. I came from the 80's when we all weren't too proud or too scared to actually do things like this. This was half the fun of being in a band. And yes, we could play.
My 75-year-old legs hurt from being that far apart. Gotta do some stretching, now, if that'll help. But so often, stages are tiny, and it's hard to move around that much.
As a side note, this is a GUIDELINE of how to start thinking differently about your performance as a Guitarist. Most people that I work with can take my advice and run with it to the next level looking WAAAY better than I can. It's ultimately about performing better to give the fans a better experience than just standing there looking like an average joe. I hope this helps everyone take their own skills to the next level while making it your own! Thanks for watching.
+Kevin Andrews great advice. This gave me a whole new perspective on performing and taking my guitar to the next level. These are extremely important tips and what you gave is relevant for people who want big shows. Keep putting videos out.
If you have to start thinking about your 'performance' then you're in it for all the wrong reasons. Fucking posers have been the death of rock n' roll.
Agreed A little sway and body language can draw people in even if they don't particularly like the song or style of music you're playing. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tell is a magnificent example of this. His live performances are unique and engaging.
rob donell: I actually have years of research touring and talking with bands/artists on their methods. I didn't develop this on my own but rather a combination from a lot of respected players and artists.
Thanks Nik Anderson: you want to start your set with Medium High energy (not too crazy bc you don't want to scare away an audience). Then by the 3rd or 4th song when people are feeling you, then you kick up the energy!
this is brilliant as keef richards said, "I learned the moves first in front of a mirror-then I learned how to play" you must have stage presence if you wanna be a star funny keef does the strum down/guitar up vice versa move all the time lol
Free movement while playing is a sign of knowing your material really well and a level of confidence. I will sometimes ,in the middle of a song, jump off the stage with guitar and start dancing and playing with an audience member. They love it …. I’m only doing for 30 seconds before I return to the stage. Very effective at winning the audience
Dude, gotta say... at first I thought your video was kinda boring, but them I saw all the hate in the comments and got it. People are stupid. They are so stupid that they are beyond needing to hear what you have to say... they are past it and landed in "i hate that s**t so I'll pretend it's useless and shamefull" land. I'm sorry for my first thoughts. Good work there.
All you haters should go and watch Alice Cooper live. If you listen to him and think "yeah, cool", you'll get out of his concert with a fully-blown mind.
I agree, with you on this. when I go SEE a band. I wanna SEE a show. I don't care to hear my favorite songs played religiously note for note by a band sitting on stools. I can hear that anytime on an album, the radio, mp3 player etc etc. I prefer a performance along with great music. cool tips man 👍
Uh yeah, but you have to recognize how hard it is to stand up and play guitar while singing and doing that for about 2 hours while under some lights that are hotter than hell. You go to a show for the experience of listening to musicians PLAY their music. If youre going for some dumb stage antics then youre there for the wrong reason.
If they are good i don't care if they sit on 5 gallon bucket's. Too many jumping guitarists that don't study what they play, they just want to "shred". Fuck that.
As someone who used to perform just standing still, I can guarantee stuff like this is very important. These moves, as mentioned on the video, are basic, but very impactful. Remember, people do pay more to see their bands perform live than to the music itself because of how much their stage presence is. If you gonna see a band just play staying frozen solid in one spot, not moving much, that is just plain boring and not worth paying for. And stuff like this is not really just for musicians, but to any performer in general. You have to make the audience FEEL what you are performing, and if you are not achieving that, you are doing something very VERY wrong.
Great advice. So many things there that we see Rock/country stars do onstage but we don't think about it. The quick jump back to the mic is a good example. It looks spontaneous but it's totally planned - they ALL do it :-D
Thank you for the tips! I play bass and naturally dance around with it and groove against my more stationary band members. I'm all over the place LOL but I will show this video to my band. My band mates are really great musicians but have to get used to moving around instead of being in a fixed position all the time! I want us to put on a great show when we start performing! Your tips are simple to follow and look very effective. It is a great reference and I'm sure it will help us out very much! More videos like this would be very helpful.
I am a guitarist and a dancer and I find this video totally helpful. Of course, in a band you're a musician in the first place, but on stage, it truly is more than that. Sure it's gonna look weird, if you're faking it all the time. But this video is not meant to make you a dancer instead of a guitarist - these tips can help you connect to the audience and show them you're enjoying the gig. The point is to not look introvert when you're concentrated. Communicate with the audience and your buddies!
The problem is, is that some these "stage present skills," are contributing to improper form and technique on the guitar. I am sorry, but most of these "rockstars" that are shown doing these outrageous maneuvers are either playing with a track, or making an artist decision on going outside with what they are really playing. I agree that stage presence is a big factor for an audience, but as an artist you must stay true to who you are and not with how to become a tool for people to think that you look cool. Music is not about money and looking cool, this is partially why pop music exists. Be yourself and make good music, you make music that you enjoy, react to it accordingly. Don't be concerned with trying to be some flashy fool on stage.
I've been playing on stage for 30 years, and only in the last 5 or so years have been able to figure out to some of the things you suggested. We have a great sound, stage show, but like most small time cover /original bands don't get the stage hours it takes to get your personal "look" down pat. These are awesome suggestions to any musicians that need to "not just stand there". Thanks Kevin,
You're welcome! Yes, it does take time and sometimes not every band has the ability to dedicate the time for this and make sure everyone is on the same page. Gene Simmons actually fired some people from KISS because they didn't want to invest the time into the visual aspect. These are just suggestions for bands that do have the time and want to get to the next level. Thanks for your comment and have a good day.
That's been really helpful Kevin, people tell me I look good playing to them using the moves you demonstrated . You know I keep viewing this every once in a while and it'd be great if you had a few more moves for us solo entertainers. Best regards
This videos will help me a whole ton. Due to I trust firmly that in my covers (for the moment I only do covers due to I'm a beginner) I want to transmit the feeling the song goes trough me. Not just being there playing nicely. When I decide to play outside in front of people I will look confident to move around.
I recently did a gig and we were filmed by friend's phones. It was a shock just how boring we were to look at despite playing high energy Rock. I stumbled across your video and there are some great pointers! Thankyou!
When you’re playing in arenas and stadiums, you have to be this dramatic if not more. It’s funny how so many people think “this is ridiculous and over the top! No one does this!” Then they sit and wonder why they felt the urge to watch this video in the first place. They wonder why their band is still on small stages. Then they watch national acts do exactly what Kevin is talking about.
I see so many bands who play so well completely fail at this and don't get any success because at their shows they literally give no energy and look dead on stage. People need to know this info. Like actually it will help your career
Good tips, thanks. Stuff I don't think about as a musician, but I need to know as a performer. I usually feel awkward and out of place when moving on stage, this should help get me started.
Thanks Kevin. This was very helpful information. You are 100% right, these are very much needed because many times i got negative feedback from audiances that i stand like a puppet and perform playing guitar. Even though i play guitar well, i was criticised by many for not enjoying on stage and sitting and not moving.. Then i started playing guitar by standing . Your lesson was very helpful , will try this on my next stage show.. I am a guitarist by hobby :-) , perform many times in my corporate shows.. :-) .
Very cool! Got here Googling ways to improve stage presence, especially if you're a singer/guitarist. This was super helpful and I'll be using these tips to get better. Thank!
These are useful tips for looking more interesting on stage! I'm surprised by the number of negative comments. It seems many people are uncomfortable with the having to look interesting in addition to playing and singing well. Both are necessary. I think people come to live performances to see the performers as much as to hear the music. Live music often doesn't sound good because the PA is not adjusted right -- sad but true. But if the performers are interesting to see, it helps, and for many fans, it's the most important thing. Thanks for this interesting video.
I don't know if I'm good enough at playing and singing that I can move around a lot at the same time, but I will certain use a wide stance and make use of the coordination and bodily awareness I've gained from lifting weights.
+Kevin Andrews Tx :) I think you have great pointers / moves. The other guys I find here on YT don't really walk the talk. So, thanks (I have 3 shows coming up in 10 days - think you can make that video that soon?) And thanks again :)
Great Video! More on this ( rockstar on stage with a guitar tips ) would be awesome....there is not that much on this subject on you tube....Thank You!

Totally agree. It's good stuff. Thanks, Kevin A.
When i saw the thumbnail you looked like an action figure 😂
Just realized hahaha
Lol
I am screaming 😂
Lol 😂
But he IS one--a real one, helping us to look good on stage!

something many bassist should learn
Tbh I feel called out but at the same time I came here for some reason
Same here xD
Yea except Lindsey way she plays the bass while she moves around a lot lol search her up
And then you have Gojira's bassist...
@@puglover6113 mcr for the win.(!)

Kevin Andrews you are helping me so much!
If you have to start thinking about your 'performance' then you're in it for all the wrong reasons. Fucking posers have been the death of rock n' roll.
I've seen some of the best musicians I've met put on the most boring shows just because they refuse to fucking move. Good tips.
+Matt Ullom Thank you...that's exactly what I'm trying to do. A little movement can go a long way to win over an audience
Breaking Benjamin was the most boorish show ever. My chemical romance on the other hand.... And Skillet moves a lot.
Agreed
A little sway and body language can draw people in even if they don't particularly like the song or style of music you're playing.
Ian Anderson of Jethro Tell is a magnificent example of this.
His live performances are unique and engaging.
Tyler Patten That mcr thing is so true. They were always moving all over the place, they used the entire stage. Great stage presence!
The early 70s soft rock-band "Bread" is another example.
rob donell: I actually have years of research touring and talking with bands/artists on their methods. I didn't develop this on my own but rather a combination from a lot of respected players and artists.
This is actually more helpful for lead singers/rhythm guitarists than for lead guitarists.
If you're rythm and singing, be the Hetfield. If you're lead, be Satchel from steel panther.
Autizmo ??
STFU, you can't even spell RHYTHM, so any of your "points" are not valid.
@@chickclips163 he's not wrong tho. Hetfield had an amazing stage presence. If you want to keep the crowd entertained, you need to be Hetfield
Or be like angus young

Wait, so no one's gonna talk about how the guy is shredded
I've seen more shredded people
He is a professional dancer guess its granted
I noticed too
Overhead lighting makes everyone look shredded. Take notice when any male model is photographed. They are always light from above.
That's timely stuff right there. Thx friend
Great tips. A lot of these simple moves are overlooked by many up and coming bands. They really make a difference.
thank you rivers

Great suggestions. I struggle immensely and kinda freeze. I will take these ideas to my next gig. Thank you for sharing. .
I'm playing "crazy train" in two weeks and your video is fun yet helpful. Thank you!
Jon Samuel You're welcome, how did your show go?
Noah: thanks for the comment but I never claim to actually be able to play guitar but I train guitarists/performers how to be marketable.
Great video! Thanks!
Its all about stagecraft. Musicians practice for hours to play as good as they can, but only a few can work the crowd.
I thought this was going to be a cringey joke, but it's actually quite a good intro to basic showmanship that most musicians are sadly lacking.
Free movement while playing is a sign of knowing your material really well and a level of confidence. Investing in a wireless cable system will really free your movement as well
Thank you for sharing this excellent advice!
very helpful tips! I will keep this in mind if ever I play on stage.
Good stuff. Jazz guitarist playing rock. Never thought about what I was doing with my body.
9 years later and this video is still necessary, great stuff man ❤
