This is very good perfromance advice BUT, ONLY if you've practiced the music and you know your shit COLD! If you don't, it's better for you to stay stationary and concentrate on playing your notes! That said, you shouldn't even be up there giging UNTIL you and your bandmates know your shit cold!

There needs to be more instruction like this. You take these ideas and run with them, make it your own things. I came from the 80's when we all weren't too proud or too scared to actually do things like this. This was half the fun of being in a band. And yes, we could play.

As a side note, this is a GUIDELINE of how to start thinking differently about your performance as a Guitarist. Most people that I work with can take my advice and run with it to the next level looking WAAAY better than I can. It's ultimately about performing better to give the fans a better experience than just standing there looking like an average joe. I hope this helps everyone take their own skills to the next level while making it your own! Thanks for watching.

When you’re playing in arenas and stadiums, you have to be this dramatic if not more. It’s funny how so many people think “this is ridiculous and over the top! No one does this!” Then they sit and wonder why they felt the urge to watch this video in the first place. They wonder why their band is still on small stages. Then they watch national acts do exactly what Kevin is talking about.

Uh yeah, but you have to recognize how hard it is to stand up and play guitar while singing and doing that for about 2 hours while under some lights that are hotter than hell. You go to a show for the experience of listening to musicians PLAY their music. If youre going for some dumb stage antics then youre there for the wrong reason.

Free movement while playing is a sign of knowing your material really well and a level of confidence. I will sometimes ,in the middle of a song, jump off the stage with guitar and start dancing and playing with an audience member. They love it …. I’m only doing for 30 seconds before I return to the stage. Very effective at winning the audience

  • @RickRodGaming
    @RickRodGaming 5 років тому +5

As someone who used to perform just standing still, I can guarantee stuff like this is very important. These moves, as mentioned on the video, are basic, but very impactful. Remember, people do pay more to see their bands perform live than to the music itself because of how much their stage presence is. If you gonna see a band just play staying frozen solid in one spot, not moving much, that is just plain boring and not worth paying for. And stuff like this is not really just for musicians, but to any performer in general. You have to make the audience FEEL what you are performing, and if you are not achieving that, you are doing something very VERY wrong.

I've been playing on stage for 30 years, and only in the last 5 or so years have been able to figure out to some of the things you suggested. We have a great sound, stage show, but like most small time cover /original bands don't get the stage hours it takes to get your personal "look" down pat. These are awesome suggestions to any musicians that need to "not just stand there". Thanks Kevin,

    • @kvandrew80

You're welcome! Yes, it does take time and sometimes not every band has the ability to dedicate the time for this and make sure everyone is on the same page. Gene Simmons actually fired some people from KISS because they didn't want to invest the time into the visual aspect. These are just suggestions for bands that do have the time and want to get to the next level. Thanks for your comment and have a good day.

I am a guitarist and a dancer and I find this video totally helpful. Of course, in a band you're a musician in the first place, but on stage, it truly is more than that. Sure it's gonna look weird, if you're faking it all the time. But this video is not meant to make you a dancer instead of a guitarist - these tips can help you connect to the audience and show them you're enjoying the gig.
The point is to not look introvert when you're concentrated. Communicate with the audience and your buddies!

The problem is, is that some these "stage present skills," are contributing to improper form and technique on the guitar. I am sorry, but most of these "rockstars" that are shown doing these outrageous maneuvers are either playing with a track, or making an artist decision on going outside with what they are really playing. I agree that stage presence is a big factor for an audience, but as an artist you must stay true to who you are and not with how to become a tool for people to think that you look cool.
Music is not about money and looking cool, this is partially why pop music exists.
Be yourself and make good music, you make music that you enjoy, react to it accordingly. Don't be concerned with trying to be some flashy fool on stage.

Hi Kevin, thank you for sharing your great video! Been reading all the comments and laughing, good times! :-)
I love your tips for upbeat rocky songs but I'm curious to know what you might recommend for quieter, folky, ballad-type songs, where it really wouldn't be appropriate to groove around and move all over stage? Also one potential issue with the wide stance is that it lowers the required mic position which would be a problem if you later performed a 'ballad'-style song, in which you didn't use the wide stance. Also obviously means the mic is stuck at that height for any song intros or talking so you'd have to retain that stance your entire show.
    Thanks again for sharing.

I think back in the early 90's Nirvana shattered all these rules that worked for bands like Nelson

These are useful tips for looking more interesting on stage! I'm surprised by the number of negative comments. It seems many people are uncomfortable with the having to look interesting in addition to playing and singing well. Both are necessary. I think people come to live performances to see the performers as much as to hear the music. Live music often doesn't sound good because the PA is not adjusted right -- sad but true. But if the performers are interesting to see, it helps, and for many fans, it's the most important thing. Thanks for this interesting video.

Thanks Kevin. This was very helpful information. You are 100% right, these are very much needed because many times i got negative feedback from audiances that i stand like a puppet and perform playing guitar. Even though i play guitar well, i was criticised by many for not enjoying on stage and sitting and not moving.. Then i started playing guitar by standing . Your lesson was very helpful , will try this on my next stage show.. I am a guitarist by hobby :-) , perform many times in my corporate shows.. :-) .

With a fuck tonne of practice, if even after that it throws you off, then scrap it - the music is the most important
