    I am a feminist and you idiots have no idea what drives feminists. She is actually displaying perfect feminism, a female should be able to wear whatever she wants to wear no matter what other people think about what she is wearing.

      Winston Smif Damn, way to come on too strong. All Cilly said is that she is displaying perfect feminism. No one said it was in the NAME of feminism. Wearing what you like without caring about others IS a quality of feminism. If you were to put a pine tree in your living room and hang lights and ornaments all over it, you're showing Christmas spirit. You can say you don't celebrate Christmas and the tree is just a coincidence, but you're performing a Christmas ritual regardless of semantics. So don't be such a douche.

    Your daughter is absolutely adorable. Without a care of what other people would think or say about her in such garb, she sticks to her guns and thinks that the outfit is pretty. A self sense of fashion and lack of caring about society standards, your daughter is now awarded 1000 internets. Please tell her I said to never change.

      I completely agree and i was around that age when i first saw the movies. At the age of 5 children don't really know or care about things like that and when i saw that in the movie my first thought was "wow thats a pretty outfit" not "ugh society should not show women in that kind of demeaning outfit" kids should be allowed to be innocent and just look at the pretty outfit.

      Dead Girl Walking Be that as it may on the surface, children are already brainwashed from birth along a certain line of regard for themselves & others. Pink baby blankets & blue baby blankets ring a bell? Dresses for girls & pants for boys? All along gender lines. Lines of battle, lines that start the process of artificially contrived division & separation that become more pronounced in one's awareness as we age.
      Children absorb everything like a sponge, & in just a few more years, a child, will learn how to hook a man, & how to not be hooked by a female.
      If Princess Leia wore a Dutch smock with sequins, the little girl would think it is pretty. The reason Leia has to be naked other than a few strips of cloth is lost on the child, but the brainwashing propaganda is insidious & subtle, & the child will come to view the near-nakedness as "normal," which is exactly what it is intended for the child to think.
      Let the child think the Outfit is "Pretty," but an awake, intelligent adult needs to interject the child's comments with responsible words about the fact that she is naked (almost) & that it is very unneccessary to the movie plot, & is disrespectful to Leia & females in general because it is not how we ordinarily dress in real life except where it is appropriate. Even though the child will not comprehend that, the idea will have been planted about sexism, & will 'click' in its mind later on. We must help children to SEE; not allow them to take for granted that what they see is appropriate or okay.
      Since the propaganda starts extremely early in every child's life, the truth must be taught right along side it, keeping pace all the way. The child will still enjoy what a child enjoys. But it will not be mindless like its peers. Nor like too many 'adults' either.

  • @ElveeKaye

    This is freakin' ADORABLE!! Her tastes are simple. She is five years old, and her outfit choices are driven by one simple consideration: Is it pretty? Then I want to wear it! She's, what, seven years old now? Have you shown her this video recently, just to see her reaction?

  • @SouthKratts
    @SouthKratts 9 років тому +113

    For those of you saying that the father is teaching her misogyny:
    First of all, he's not trying to teach her much, except about who the characters are in the movie. He's asking questions to her and letting her run the show.
    Second of all, that girl who's running the show happens to be only *five years old*. She's probably never heard about sexual objectification before anytime in her life, and, depending on how much she might know about sex, she can probably only see Leia's dress for its sparkles and design rather than its revealing nature. Bare skin probably means nothing to her. The entire point of this video is how somebody as young as five years of age can take something that grown people wouldn't like for grown-up reasons and give an innocent spin to it.
    Third of all, for those of you going so far as to say that Star Wars is misogynist, you realize that Jabba the Hut is a villain, and by him forcing Leia to wear that outfit, it's supposed to portray him as even more evil because he sees Leia as a sex slave.
    Finally, I thought feminism was supposed to be about gender equality and letting people do whatever the heck they want despite their genders. Obviously, Leia was forced to wear the dress in the movie, but when you criticize women for wanting to wear more sexualizing outfits because they like to, all you're doing is establishing that women are supposed to be the gatekeepers of sex, that women are somehow corrupted by sex, and that women don't---GASP---actually ENJOY sex in general. Honestly, you radicals are no different than the Christian fundamentalists by placing sex on a pedestal that should've been taken down a long time ago.

      Simply she's too young for sexuality, so the whole thing is over her head. Might as well just let her like the outfit for her innocent reasons. She can debate this stuff when she's old enough... which I expect she is by now.

  • @GregTom2
    @GregTom2 9 років тому +181

    What's hilarious is that feminists in the comment section either think that the girl; as a woman, should be allowed to wear whatever she sees fit.
    Other feminists say that it's unacceptable for her father to let her watch content that twists her mind into thinking that she wants to wear next to nothing.
    Some others blame the patriarchy or the movie...
    But goddamnit it seems like none of them ever interacted with a child. The movie never glorifies the skimpy outfit. Indeed it's associated with being a slave. The child liked it because she's a child and doesn't know better than to not say whatever comes to mind.
    Perhaps the only consistant feminist agenda is to _complain_.

    This is absolutely disgusting, this child has been brainwashed by the father, he was obviously trying to act innocent in this video so the Legion Of Feminists would spare him our wrath. The outfit Princess Leia wore was disgusting, I couldn't believe the level of misogyny I was seeing when I first saw it. It's sickening how this movie isn't banned yet. How pathetic of this male to expose his innocent daughter to imagery of a half-naked victimised woman and teach her that it's okay, all in the name of Reddit Karma and UA-cam views!

      1) He is not teaching her it is okay, he tried to explain what demeaning meant to her for Pete's sake.
      2) He is not Introducing her to misogyny, he is Introducing her to a classic film of which the slave outfit is used to portray the sickening character of jabba the hut. If anything its sending the message that misogyny is disgusting and wrong by linking it to the villain.
      3) If you were a promoter of "peace" you would not be at taking this man based only on a short animated video which has obviously been made with the intention of capturing the innocence of his daughters interpretation.
      4) As you have so obviously lost the plot I'll tell you that real feminism is about equality for all regardless of gender,NOT to give you a platform to attack everything you don't like about the world blame for all that has gone wrong in your sorry little life as you seem to think.
      5) oh and I find it hilarious that you think star wars should have been banned, by that logic the only films we would be allowed to see would be those made by Disney and Pixar... Unless you think toy story encourages young girls to dress up like little bopeep and devote their lives to raising livestock for their husbands.

      Well (assuming) that the anti-feminists are responding to feminists then logically the feminist comments would be further down than the anti-feminist comments being that the feminists would be the instigating force in this scenario. But like you I can't be bothered scrolling that far down so I won't assert what is going on. Instead I'll just keep my comments neutralish.

      To remain neutral in the face of bigotry is to support the bigotry. Inaction is in itself an action.
      The angry/humourless feminist is a tired and untrue trope used insidiously to discredit feminist discourse via a faux-intellectualising of hatred.

      A more believable assertion would be to claim that the Feminists who get referred to as Social Justice Warriors are in the minority. But they certainly are not fictional. Also people claiming that the girls outfit from starwars is rude to women I thought u wanted people to dress like that, to show that women can wear what they want without being judged, but then u go and judge Adam Buxton and call him a horrible parent after one super cute video is let out on youtube? I think that hating on this video, is disgusting because it's just a little girl talking about a dress somebody wore in a movie. Just my opinion.

    The only thing that would make that demeaning is being forced to wear it. Wearing what you want to wear isn't demeaning - it's personal choice, and THAT'S what empowerment is. Empowerment is NOT "You can't wear that because I think it's too sexy (and therefore demeaning, as if expression of sexuality is a bad thing)"

      And if you tell a woman she that she reminds you of actress, she'll think you're talking about the roles the actress played, rather than their facial structure.
      Women and gay men don't share an interest in aesthetics, they just share the delusion that crafting a "look" is a meaningful skill.

    I think people are missing the point entirely. Yes, the outfit is demeaning in the sense that Jabba's forcing Leia to wear a skimpy outfit for eye candy, especially when it's not something Leia's character would likely choose to wear. But his daughter is looking at it from a purely aesthetic view. She thinks it's pretty. Nothing more, nothing less. She likes it no matter what anyone tells her. And as her her dad "brainwashing" her, it's pretty obvious he's trying to tell her it's not a "nice" outfit, but he's unsure how to brooch the subject in a way she can understand.

  • @JimSteinbrecher
    @JimSteinbrecher 8 років тому +6

    well, her role was as a decorative object; she hadnt exactly been enslaved to work in the coal mines, so it makes sense that she was given something nice to wear.
    whats odd is that jabba would have such a human sense of aesthetics. youd think that, to him, a human would look more or less like a giant slug looks to us. he probably had a xenofashion adviser.

    • @alexeverett308
      @alexeverett308 8 років тому +1

      Maybe Jabba himself didn't choose the outfit. It makes sense that his other slaves would do the "dirty work" as it were, capturing Leia and gives her the slave clothes. Then Jabba would just have her as a decoration, on display like Han was.

  • @JessBlake2

    I think the way this Dad approaches the topic is excellent. He doesn't tell her what to think but he points out the role that is being portrayed in the clothing. Then she finds a way to like the outfit and not be demeaned by it. It's a way to help her think critically about what clothes represent when he's not around.

    Okay, okay, let's get something straight. Both all of the anti-feminists in the comments AND Berta Lovejoy are wrong. Lemme explain:
    Anti-feminists: They're wrong just because they're anti-feminism, which means they're anti equality for everyone.
    Berta Lovejoy: Although she is trying to come off as a feminist, she is missing the mark completely. Here's what I mean:
    The ORIGINAL concept of Leia being put into a bikini and such as a slave woman working for Jabba could be taken as "Oh so what, of course she would be wearing that as a slave", but in actuality it probably was a marketing ploy and something for male audiences because we don't see any of the men striped down to their tighty whities or flaunting sex appeal.
    HOWEVER, this is all moot. The little girl liked the outfit itself, and said she would like to wear it and that Leia was pretty in it. Feminism is certainly not about being a prude and not wanting to show skin. Heck, a large argument of feminism is fighting for the right for women/girls to wear what they want and what makes them happy, without getting judged by people who say that women should be covered up because they'll be a distraction to men/ "be targets" for assault.
    The father even TRIED to talk with her about how it was seen as demeaning/objectifying, which originally it was, but the little girl just liked the outfit in general, and said if she were in that scenario she would flee the oppression and rock the outfit.
    Berta Lovejoy I'm sorry, but you are completely off the mark and giving feminists a horrid name on a site that barely respects them as is. I am a fellow feminist, but you are trying to insinuate the idea that nudity=sex, which is a rather dated and harmful line of thinking. Additionally, this line of thinking feeds into the idea of forcing women to cover up, which is a misogynistic line of thinking itself for it teaches women to be afraid of their sexuality to boot.
    PS. The child was only looking through an ENCYCLOPEDIA of Star Wars, which half contains aliens and robots. If she happened to turn upon the Leia page, then she happened to turn upon the Leia page. It's not like he gave her a copy of Playboy.

    I love the innocence of this little girl. She likes what she likes for reasons which are TOTALLY lacking in adult rhetoric be it for or against that type of clothing for whatever reason adults go on about. She hasn't yet been taught by the world to see herself as anything but who she is as a person, as an individual apart from her gender. She hasn't taken onto herself shame or embarrassment for being female or the negativity that brings both to women AND men via values judgments of their choices in things like clothing, hairstyles, makeup use, etc which can clearly be seen by the horrid comments made by some "feminists" here. (As a side note, REAL feminism fosters equality of both sexes in all areas and is especially about freeing females and men from the shackles of personal judgments about a person based on clothing choices etc so people are free to be who they are and like what they like. Real feminists don't teach shame but the opposite.) Please foster this sense of self as she grows older so she is free to like what she likes regardless of what others tell her she should like based on their own need to control others' ideals.

    This girl doesn't see the Princess' outfit as "slutty" or "horrible" because her mind doesn't think of gross things like that. People (*women AND men*) should be able to wear what they want without being criticized just because *people can't control their owns thoughts*.
    Now in this situation the Princess is *forced to wear the outfit* which is bad, but the outfit itself and the act of wearing it out of personal choice is not.

    The girl was questioning what she saw as elegant; her father was trying to state it would be seen as deming on a girl due to the fact how it was forced onto the character. This in no way was violating rights considering they were discussing an outfit from a fictional universe.
    Hell, the girl expressed that she'd wear what she'd want to wear. How is that sexist viewers?

    I recall thinking how nice her outfit was when I was around her age too. I didn't have a care (or knowledge) that it was sexual, revealing or demeaning to be forced to wear. 5 year olds do not comprehend that stuff, typically. They see it as no different to the bikinis they've seen women wear plenty of times at the beach or pool or in stores and catalogues. Children have a tenuous grasp of context, to the point of disregarding it only to focus on the singular thing in a vacuum.

      ***** Bullcrap? Teaching kids to consider the feelings and opinions of others?
      If you're not gonna start teaching kids to act morally at age 5, when are you gonna do it?
      Empathy is one the absolute most fundamental skills of all social interaction, and something kids NEED to learn.
      It's not like we're talking about talking to kids about the arguments for and against euthanasia.

    • @TheMagicRat933
      @TheMagicRat933 8 років тому

      ***** *sigh*
      > Morality can be taught by actions.
      It could and should also be taught by talking to the child. Do you seriously expect children to become moral individuals if you don't ever _tell_ them what is right or wrong? A five year old is prone to do all kinds of actions it shouldn't do. Do you seriously expect a five year old to be able to pick up on those actions being bad simply because its parents don't do those actions?
      > Not by painting a child’s perceptions of things with the parent’s BIAS.
      Bias? Towards what? Bias towards empathic thought and moral actions? Wat? There is no "bias" here, or at least there is no need for bias. This is not (contrary to what the father in the video thinks) about what kind of clothes it's proper to wear. This is about EMPATHY.
      > There is absolutely NO NEED to ruin the child’s enjoyment of that scene with adult morality drama.
      What if she was unironically cheering and laughing at the sight of Luke writhing in pain while being zapped by the Emperor?
      > If parenting is done well the child will be taught Empathy during her day to day interactions with people and the world.
      Again, I have no idea how you got the idea that children are able to learn to behave morally if their parents never put into words how they expect them to behave. Children absolutely do not have the ability to read so well between the lines, to infer how to act simply from their parents' actions. Words should always be followed by example, but exemplary behavior *cannot* stand alone either.
      > Not forced by twisting her innocent view of a scene in her favorite movie. If the child only sees the cute outfit, allow her to enjoy the cute outfit for what it is. As she grows older she will start understanding the more complicated implications of that scene.
      5 years is a completely appropriate age to start teaching kids about how other people have feelings too, and another person's feelings about a situation might be different from your own, and should be taken into consideration. Obviously, it's too early to expect kids to master these concepts, but it's certainly not to early start teaching. And one might as well engage the child by using her favorite movie as a case study.
      > My parents didn't shove such bullcrap into my mind as I was growing up. They allowed me to develop my own morality and guided me when I needed guidance.
      I am feeling sorely tempted, but I'll refrain from commenting on this.
      > That is the job of a parent. TO GUIDE the development of their children and their morals, not to shove their adult views and biases into the mind of a 5 year old.
      It bears repeating: a parent necessarily has to put into words to their child what they need to learn to function in the world. If a child tramples another child's sand castle should its parents just drop subtle hints that that was wrong? NO. They should explain it to the child in no uncertain terms. In the same way empathy should be _explained_ to a child. They should not just be expected to figure it out completely on their own.
      And I _REALLY_ wonder how you get the idea that empathy is a "bias". It is an utterly fundamental key to all human interaction.

    I love the comments on this. Everyone is mad about the Human dressed all skimpy. As I can recall George Lucas put that fat lady in a skimpy outfit as well. Also the singing slug-lady-singer was also skimpy naked. Where are our Feminist comments on those two? Or do we not include aliens and fat ladies in the Feminist world... :/ Poor fat lady and femail-slug-alien-singer Princess Lea is getting all the hot attention. Question: was the Rancor Male or Femail? I know the answer, but I bet the feminists out there have no idea. ;3 Enjoy!

    If she doesn't learn about this stuff from her parents, she'll learn about it from a Miley Cyrus or Nicki Minaj music video. Which would you prefer?

    Are you going to put Shed of Christmas up on your YT channel? Surely you can do so since you put up the entire series of Bug!
    (Plus, I'm American & I really want to see it now after watching this clip)

    Daughter: "No. I will just escape and keep wearing that. Because it looks really nice."

    If you hate men just because they are men, please stop calling yourself a feminist; you're just ignorant. A true feminist is one who views men and women as equals and wishes to be treated as such; not just spouting hatred with no means to an end.

    So you believe thoughts of a 5 year old hold any weight on a topic outside of her scope?
    I've seen a lot of sick things but using your daughter to manipulate your views is up there.

    SO CUTE! I'd be more worried that her response would be 'to be rescued' rather than to rescue herself, but I can understand her not wanting to mess up that carefully plaited hair. Unless she plans to free Jabba's hairdressers and make-up team too.

    wow i was SHOCKED when i read the responses to this cartoon. i thought it was hilarious. i understand that feminist point here and i agree with that, but this is a little girl here... it doesn't seem like a scripted thing. and even if it were, THIS IS A CARTOON! Everything is fair game in ART, i don't believe in CENSORSHIP in any of the arts. How many terrible/senitive/touchy issues have been explored on Monty Python sketches/movies??????? I think Monty Python is creativity gone wild... it's silly and humorous. It's the same with this cartoon. The day we start censoring art/cartoons is the day this civilization will be near the end. once again, i agree with the feminist view point, but this is ART, HUMOR,ANIMATION... there should never be any taboos in the arts. this is just my opinion. i respect the opinions posted here, i'm just not sure if some people understand the role of art in the world. cheers

    This kid at five years old already has a better vocabulary than most American college students. And the fact that the father was able to educate his daughter by explaining what demeaning means shows that he may be more dedicated to her Growth then most of the American fathers that I've ever seen.

      You’re criticizing Americans for not having a good vocabulary, and yet you spelled “demeaning” as “the meaning”
