So I'm not an artist, by any means. But I dabble in painting when I have migraines...yeah I know in not normal. So I wanted to recreate a room my husband and I stayed in our weddng/honeymoon for a Valentine's day gift. Where 1/2 the wall was this aged , undeniable " if you listen I'll tell you my history" brick. It was in New Orleans and an old restored(ish) civil war mansion. Every video I seen was this perfect "brick "...then I came across this. The technique..dissected...texture, color ...nailed this Old wall. And though I am putting it in canvas translated and just beautifully, came together. So thank you fo his video. Huge (new ) fan!
I am glad you liked it, I did a foam build of a faux jail cell recently for a movie I was blessed to be a part of. I hope to be using some of those pieces to do some 3d paint work with for my haunt this year.
Thanks so much for the positive comment. That product is really cool, and the effect is awesome. For doing a commercial or home haunted house (scare amusement) or stage set (like for a high school on a budget) the cost of the cement vs. latex paint (oops paint is $5-7 a gallon) prevents its use. Handing a trowel to a volunteer worker or high school student will just end up costing more or taking a lot of time. However, for my production design for movies...this is a cool option.
That is the idea. Create a look that will be good enough in low lighting like in a commercial scare house (haunted house) without taking up all your time. There is a lot to do when trying to entertain folks and make it safe to scare them on Halloween. Thanks for watching.
I think these techniques are pretty basic, so as an amateur...yes. You may want to get a small wood panel (about 3' x3' or 4' x 4') that is relatively smooth or has a wall texture similar to what you will be working on. You can practice on this board and see if you like it or if it works. A good quality of paint and masking tape are recommended for better results. Sorry for the delay in responding, been a busy week.
I tend to pick up oops paint throughout the year. I will look for colors I want or colors I can mix and get the desired results. They are all latex based and for the most part I avoid gloss paints unless I know I will be mixing a good quantity of flat with it. Another option for paint is a Habitat for Humanity ReStore if one is near you. Might be a little more than regular oops paint but they tend to have more in stock to choose from and proceeds go to a good cause.
Could you please help me? I have been hired to do the EXTERIOR on a home. Client wants the woodgrain effect. Well she wants it to appear as a LOG CABIN BUT w/paint. Im more stumped at the "NATURAL WOODGRAIN" part. The home is located it humid Florida and has a STUCCO finish. Any feed back will help. PLEASE GET BACK TO ME ASAP!! Thanks!!
I love this video. I live in an apartment and want to try to do this on my accent wall in my master bedroom. I live in Michigan so what paint should I be getting? I'm so excited to try this...
I would suggest either flat or eggshell finish interior latex paints. You may want to choose colors that work because with oops paint you are working with what you have. In a haunt it is okay if it looks a bit off because it will be dark. In an apartment you will want it nicer. they also sell a glittery mica type additive that gives a bit of sparkle. a small amount of that might give the bricks that random quartz like shimmer. take lots of reference pics of brick walls to get an idea of what you want.
HI THERE. GREAT VIDEO! I WOULD LOVE TO DO THIS TECHNIQUE ON MY DINING ROOM WALL WOULD I HAVE TO PLASTER MY WALL FIRST TO GET THAT TEXTURE FOR THE FAUX BRICKS? OR WOULD IT ACTUALLY LOOK OKAY WITH REGULAR FLAT WALL? THANK YOU.
If you are doing any kind of up close and under full light of day decor I HIGHLY suggest using texture. Painting the amount of details you would need to fool someone's eye that it is a brick wall would take a really long time. Check out davisgraveyard (google search) They have some links on how to do foam distressing for all sorts of surfaces. I highly recommend the foam for the technique.
It is what is called "Monster Mud." You take drywall joint compound (the paste/plaster kind) and add latex paint to it. It thins it down and the latex paint makes it more resilient and tints it slightly.

Thank you. It does work even better when you add some 3d texture to it with a carved foam wall.
This is awesome. Thanks for much for posting. I have been looking for a similar tutorial

@MerciCatastrophe My phone decided to play difficult....see above for response.
goood jobb
What kinds of paint did y'all use?
You can lay brick faster than your project in half the time
you should do that for your haunted house, then when you need to take the walls down you can get some good jackhammer and sledge time in.
