Can't agree more. Reese I think called it plastic evaluation back in the day, and bidding books haven't stressed it enough since.

I had a good run on this tournament with all boards above average for 72.77%
B1 I didn't want to super accept with the minimum so I played 2S+1 for same 57.1%
B2 Exactly the same bidding and play as you including the correct but risky finesse for 3nt+1 for same 75.0%
B3 Here you beat me as I had same auction but I ruffed the club with a top spade and played the 2 off the board (4,Q) so at the end I didn't have the spots for 10 tricks and only won 9. I assume if the robot E played the 4 on your first spade that you weren't running the 9, so the T cover sort of cost. 3S= was still 67.9%
B4 I took the 1NT then X route which resulted in opponents competing to 3H= and -140 was good for 82.1%
B5 Same auction and I did SAK,HA, then S on which east threw the HQ, I got two more club tricks for same -2 and +100 for 75.0%
B6 Uber flat board although I raised to only 2S as my rebid but had the worlds fair in context for partners 3C game try (actually wanted to cue over that but looked like robot plays those as natural suit). 53.6%
B7 I passed the 2NT invite with the obvious 8 tricks for +120 and 85.7%
B8 Same auction and basically same play (In end I cashed KQ of D then ran clubs because it felt like W as 4=4=2=3 was more likely than 4=4=3=2 given E diamond pitch. Not sure this was right since 4=4=3=2 is more likely a priori. Either works for 3=4=x=y) so that was +420 and 85.7%
Hand visualization is probably the second most useful general skill (behind counting). It obviously comes up in the bidding, but also in the defense and even sometimes the declarer play too.

hi Pete any chance you and Laura can have another challenge match as love watching your different styles of analyses. it's also interesting seeing you both get the bidding almost the same but I guess you know each others game so well it would be difficult to outwit each other

I was taught to bid this way 13-14 pts, 1 club
    15-16 pts 1 diamond
    17-18 pts 1 heart
    19-20 pts 1 spade
    21-22 1 no trump
I was searching online to refresh my bidding because I haven't played since the 90s, and I could not find this biddinh strategy. Do you know what strategy this is

Ax is a bad stopper. A10 is a good one..you wanna take the nt from your hand whenever possible. 1H doesnt guarantees KQxxx .. Imagine pd having Jxx or 9xxx H. If RO leads H in nt you are toast since your double stopper is gone.

Board 7 is worth looking at Pete says 4 spades is cold but is it if they start with 3 rounds of clubs. You ruff and now have only 4 trumps same as east, how do you continue? I cannot see a way that avoids 2 diamond losers can anyone else?

I was saying 4S would usually make on 3-2 diamonds. It can't be made with the 4-1 split like that.

Why open 1NT with this first hand? I know you have 15, but you make it damn near impossible to convey 5 Spades and it will be you best strain quite often. If partner knows that my 2C response to a forcing NT can have a wide range in HCP and invites slightly lighter, won't we usually wind up where we belong. If we have Qh instead of Kh, we rebid 2C any how and if we insert the JC instead of the Tc, we will just raise to 2Nt. The problems solved by opening 1NT seem to only impact a small number of hands and even then the eventual contracts are not likely to be much better very often. THis seems like too little return to give up the instant ability to show. 5 Spades.
I have more sympathy for opening 1NT with 4-5-2-2 shape and 15 points since we are truly stuck after a forcing NT bid
