$5 Million Dollar Purchase Cancelled? 1979-80 OPC Sealed Case going back into Auction?

- We have another wrinkle in the story of the Multi-Million Dollar Treasure discovered in a basement in Regina, Canada. Turns out the Winner of the auction for a sealed case of 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee hockey cards, who paid $3.7 Million USD or $5M CAD is having 2nd thoughts about owning the case. Turns out he's looking to find a better home for the OPC Case (which was authenticated by BBCE) because he doesn't want to own the case anymore. He's reached out to Wayne Gretzky, Drake and Daryl Katz, plus a few other wealthy Canadians to see if they are interested in owning this prized collectible!
What's going to happen? Did he open it? Has the case been searched?

Although Lemieux never responded to me when I approached him about taking my 1990-91 Pro-Set Series One Cards, so I understand how he feels.
It isn't sealed anymore. The auction company cracked it and individually shrink wrapped all the boxes.
Hopefully not full of GI Joe cards. "We all got duped, agreed?" Lol

I don't think he even had them in his possession yet. He had only paid part of it. I read the auction house was keeping it in their vault till it was paid in full. But what I read could be wrong.

No way there is between 25-30 Gretzky rookies in a 16 box case. You get 1 Gretzky rookie per box and that’s not even a guaranteed. 79-80 OPC was a big set and there are no other cards that are even worth searching for. Bro should have done his research before not after. He should try to get his money back due to false advertising.
@5starcollectibles103 I hadn't really crunched the numbers on the claims and the estimate of Gretzky Rookies in a set/box/case. I just assumed the Heritage Auctions rep knew the stats. Thanks for the input!😃💪👍

If that was my case, I’d rip a box to see how the cut and quality of the cards are. I bought a case of 89 OPC about 15 years ago and the cards were terrible. Blades weren’t sharp, colors were dull, centering terrible but the boxes were near perfect. None of those cards would have pulled a 10, maybe a low 9. I bought them from a guy who several cases, had ripped one and had beautiful cards that scored 10’s. He was selling Sakic PSA 10’s and Gretzky PSA 10’s in the multiples from one case. Decided to go for it and buy a case from him but that didn’t work at all. Not one PSA worthy card after half the boxes so I learned that if the first box is bad, so too will the rest of them be.
Kudos to a guy who cares about hockey knowing the word "empathy." Shocking.
He never had the funds in the first place. Deadbeat bidder. Obviously the case was opened previously to authenticate each box by BBCE. The part at the end about giving the case as a gift to some girl he met when he was 7 and calls his soul mate is pretty creepy

Someone mentioned in the comments the case has not remained sealed. The boxes were removed from the case and those boxes sealed. The video you showed has someone opening the case and stacking the boxes. So you did not explain this well.

Good catch. 🚩I actually talk about some of the red flags that I see with BBCE opening and then resealing boxes/cases etc in a previous video. Heritage Auction house should be verifying any bidders for such an item. If this was offered for sale thru Christie's or Sotheby's the bidders would be lined up and no surprises once the hammer goes down. Something is off with this story. Someone will recognize this guy and fill in the public with more background. I never believed the sellers original story...heard it was in the attic, then heard basement? We will see. These are unprecedented times.
Should be a 1 million deposit and you lose it if you don't honor your bid.
The guy look's pretty rough.Def has buyer's remorse. 5 million usd is pretty high and would need atleast 5 gretzky psa 10s to break even. I could b wrong

My uncle just passed away and he gave me all this hockey cards memorabilia there's a lot of Oldies in here and I have no clue I'm not a hockey guy I've just been researching I know I have a couple of good Gretzky's in a lot of Auto cards are those hard to get I have no clue😢

its then the cards not worth much.... these guy thought he would find lots of psa 10 Gretzky rookies... sorry but for the older cards back in the days it was impossible to get a perfect card!!! soo many things how the cards were cut back then, lots of cards of centered and ruffled up cuts...

Perhaps his initial highest bid was outbid, so he decided to raise the stakes in the auction but inadvertently ended up winning.
Auction winner looks like he’s loosing sleep and stressed as hell. His uncle may not have left him as much as there was total. Who knows the real reason. Also, a condo worth $500k in 1999 at 6% would be $2.1M now, not insane growth. It’s much more significant if it’s your primary residence and you don’t pay tax on the growth.

I'm thinking the wining bid was a mistake. I remember hearing stories of people biding on ebay items just to get their name on the buying list to look good. They say it was a battle between 2 people at the end and he won.... I am thinking he wished he was out bid at the last second and as we see now he wasn't.
In my opinion .... That box should stay in Canada as it is a Canadian product.
You said you wonder if the buyer got the box and opened some and put them back but in the news clip I saw before this video it said he hadn't payed in full yet and the box was still in Texas? Because he hasn't paid in full?
I only know you buy watching your pack opening videos and do not know the winning bidder but I don't think you should be telling people what you don't know. I think it looks bad for you.

This Card, Jordan, Honus Wagner are forsure crazy cards I get it... But to think of spending that much $5Mill Cad for cards in the late 70's is really crazy... I grew up in the 80's and yess I collected and still do to this day just turned 49 last week and I first started collecting O-Pee Chee Cards back in the days.... I collect all sports to this days.... yeah I had them all from 71-72 opc Guy Lafleur Ken Dryden... etc... To find centered and perfect corners, and def no creases, and ruffled cards as well came out, sometimes cards weren't cut with the blade properely so it would look so butcher, is def hard for these cards back in the days!!! These guy def is not a card collector cause even a card collector wouldnt of jumped on this??? Why??? I bet u who ever opens that case wont even find a psa 10 rookie... The card gets graded which u pay for... To get a psa 10 rookie of the Great One!!! thats fuuukin impossible!!! that family from Sask is sooo lucky!!! Buyer probably thought he would find psa 10 Gretzky!!! lol What I dont like about the older opc cases and boxes... U can open these packs and then reseal them again.... Yeah shady alright... Back in the days shops use to open all the packs and resell them... Now I buy graded cards now so its a lot different and a lot more expensive now a days... If he wants passionate buyers to have these then open the box and sell it to multiple passionate buyers, make more people happy
you dont get the item unless full payment is made. That makes no sense you pay a deposit and get the full item I have never seen a buy now pay later high class auction house. This is not buying a sofa on easy installment payments.
Also this man is completely unhinged and all over the place. hes trying to sell gretzky to gretzky as if he wants to buy himself... What is going on? He keeps rambling about his estate money he got which is a tmi sidestory, and says true appreciators need this collection so he contacts A-B tier celebrities? As if they are the MAIN collectors in the hobby. Its very simple. You DONT have the money, and cant or wont pay for it. You made a mistake and are seeking to make amends and work with the auction house to find a buyer. Nothing about bringing this public helps his case, he just makes excuses and talks nonsense about the history of his love for the game blahblah and his windfall of free money. "I just dont appreciate it as much" may be one of the WORST copout excuses I have ever heard. This is a grown man saying ehhh changed my mind me no likey anymore. This man literally should be charged or fined for wasting money, time and resources of everyone involved.
Just take the L and sell the case to the guy who came in 2nd. Get some sun, start eating healthy, get a gym membership, and move on. Take the money you get and buy land (and not cards)…
