A good choice is something like a Nikon B700 (or whatever is the more modern version today). This is more a bridge camera between a Point-n-Shoot and a full-on DSLR. Generally a lot less bulky than the latter, a lot lighter to carry, but far, far better than the old point-n-shoots. I carried a B700 on a 15-day Greece/Italy trip and took over 20K shots. No regrets.
