I used the dabba service when I was in school. The best part was my dabba wale uncle asked me every day if I had finished my food. If the dabba didn't feel light enough he would ask me why I didn't finish the dabba, if I didnt like the bhaji (subji) or rice that day. His humane gestures made him special.

I will give some credit to Pune for some work here for at least keeping some semblance of culture. The inner agricultural society was pretty much dull and boring (I came from one of them btw!). Everyone used to play tuka ram in the evening and during day it was all ha ram! May be the last good thing maharashtra probably gave was Maratha empire in the beginning. But the same people lost panipat because of obvious stupidity. We used to talk nice and walk nice. Real hard work was done by those poor while we did "chan chan goshti". It was just another Indian subculture. The life then was: Be born in rich home, inherit something, produce kids, raise them and die. And everything should be done as per Panchang read by dear Pathak. There was hardly any latitude in life to think. May be brahmins practiced some art or culture, for everyone else it was damn regular grind! The only reason we ended up doing well is because Kolkata fucked up as business center. South was not open to any other language so our openness to Hindi was what saved us from becoming Rajasthan or WB! So obviously Mumbai was gonna succeed as a port.

This is definitely a great example of an organization which has employed uneducated workers and has run successfully for years. The practice of giving every dibbewala a part of the company, I feel, is the key for them to own their piece of action. I also feel that this cannot grow out into a major business and would always stay as a localized cheap service, that too would only exist till this or maybe next dibbewala generation would last. The reason is their in capability of handling diversity. Diversity is important for any business to flourish. It brings competition, no doubt, but that paves its long term path. I used to watch how tirelessly these dabawalas used to carry big loads of crates with lunch packs. Many times I always stopped to observe how and with what efficiency these hardworking ants used to carry such big crate on head and they used to get into choking local trains ....what a synchronisation to manage such magnanimous volume of lunch boxes through the maddening traffic of local trains...pick up, deliver and redeliver to home. They infact were motivation of many mumbaikars...to work with discipline.
I salute to you for RND.Dabawala was a back bone of mumbaikar.Their contribution to middle class office works can complete the service years.we must support them.At the same time Mahendra and Mahendra company director can help them to reestablish the noble dabba wala.Only government cannot do it.we need to understand make in India consept. 1991 to 1994 ...we hired dabbawala service, he came daily morning 8.15 am every day, he never failed, will wait for 1-2 mins and run off, will retun 5.30 pm to give empty tiffin ...thats awesome !😊

There are only around 1,000 companies that have survived more than 100 years in the US. That is less than half a percent of all the businesses in the US and in India probably even lesser. So dobbawala still delivering food after 120 years is a success story and I hope the government of mumbai helps them with discounted travel fees of trains and metros so their service becames more profitable.

If govt can pay lakhs on education, health and then provides a govt job then I will pay tax and that can help further. Also govt jobs provide stability. The only cause of drop in business seems to be a 2 year Covid 19 pandemic situation. As most of the offices turned into work from home mode. Since they don't have sufficient capital backup, it became difficult for them to sustain during lean business.
That’s not the only cause because these dabbawalas are there from hundreds of years and 20 or 25 years back there were very few private companies in Mumbai is the population of people was very less so how they were running that that time
The population was less, so was the no. of dabbawalas. Also in the two years of lockdown their business turned almost zero. Plus now there are many people providing home cooked food near offices. All these factors had a cumulative negative effect on the business of dabbawalas.

I have always wondered how the Dibbawalas perform so efficiently . Thanks for the video. . Many companies are still continuing with work from home without valid justification. It has created havoc for billions of persons , who were otherwise earning their bread and butter before the lockdown. Govt should not pamper these organisations who want to neglect their bigger social responsibility. I wish the Dibbawalas a better future and all prosperity.
Its not just companies who want work from home, but even employers are even demanding it...Govt should financially support them....we as a society cannot always help them financially.

Definitely they need to be rehabilitated & helped in all respects as their families must also be affected along with them. Very good information, I am from Punjab(India), thie process of dibawalas is very unique but after Covid19 whole sacnerio is changed, this is just one example many more are there and only wearer knows where shoe pinches. Now a days near corporate office there are homemade food available in lunch hours at very low cost. Cooking food in home is not possible as both husband wife are working not like early were husband use to work.

The Dabbawalas haven't failed , it's just that their concept has been modernized and replaced by the more world class delivery models such as Zomato Swiggy and Uber Eats. A vast majority of Mumbai's Dabbawalas have switched to these techosavvy delivery models in the last decade or so. Those who failed to keep pace with changing times have gone for other jobs. And yes, COVID pandemic since the last couple of years triggered this change.

This is definitely a great example of an organization which has employed uneducated workers and has run successfully for years. The practice of giving every dibbewala a part of the company, I feel, is the key for them to own their piece of action.
I also feel that this cannot grow out into a major business and would always stay as a localized cheap service, that too would only exist till this or maybe next dibbewala generation would last. The reason is their in capability of handling diversity. Diversity is important for any business to flourish. It brings competition, no doubt, but that paves its long term path.

I used to watch how tirelessly these dabawalas used to carry big loads of crates with lunch packs. Many times I always stopped to observe how and with what efficiency these hardworking ants used to carry such big crate on head and they used to get into choking local trains ....what a synchronisation to manage such magnanimous volume of lunch boxes through the maddening traffic of local trains...pick up, deliver and redeliver to home. They infact were motivation of many mumbaikars...to work with discipline.
I salute to you for RND.Dabawala was a back bone of mumbaikar.Their contribution to middle class office works can complete the service years.we must support them.At the same time Mahendra and Mahendra company director can help them to reestablish the noble dabba wala.Only government cannot do it.we need to understand make in India consept. 1991 to 1994 ...we hired dabbawala service, he came daily morning 8.15 am every day, he never failed, will wait for 1-2 mins and run off, will retun 5.30 pm to give empty tiffin ...thats awesome !😊

If govt can pay lakhs on education, health and then provides a govt job then I will pay tax and that can help further. Also govt jobs provide stability. You give me 1 rupee and I will return 20 paisa.

And the dabba wala is a business model it needs to be self sufficient, once givt starts pumping money it will only get worse, and will increase with subsequent govts, mc d, dominoes, swiggy, zomato their delivery partners never asked for govt help and that's how a business works, dabba peeps need to increase their fees and infuse modern technology to their delivery system.

The only cause of drop in business seems to be a 2 year Covid 19 pandemic situation. As most of the offices turned into work from home mode. Since they don't have sufficient capital backup, it became difficult for them to sustain during lean business.
That’s not the only cause because these dabbawalas are there from hundreds of years and 20 or 25 years back there were very few private companies in Mumbai is the population of people was very less so how they were running that that time
The population was less, so was the no. of dabbawalas. Also in the two years of lockdown their business turned almost zero. Plus now there are many people providing home cooked food near offices. All these factors had a cumulative negative effect on the business of dabbawalas.

I have always wondered how the Dibbawalas perform so efficiently . Thanks for the video. . Many companies are still continuing with work from home without valid justification. It has created havoc for billions of persons , who were otherwise earning their bread and butter before the lockdown. Govt should not pamper these organisations who want to neglect their bigger social responsibility. I wish the Dibbawalas a better future and all prosperity.
Its not just companies who want work from home, but even employers are even demanding it...Govt should financially support them....we as a society cannot always help them financially.
What social responsibility. Private companies pay taxes when make profits. And when in loss. Nobody comes for rescue. If they r saving on office rents and in maintaining infrastructure, wats wrong in it ?

I was fan of Mumbai Dabbewala.they used give service not only my dadaji but also my father &then to my husband.ln those olden days Phone were very rare that time many messages were written yo wife through these dabbewalas not only that these dabbewalas were so trusted that people used to get salary in cash & through this dabbas salary use to delivered to residece very safely.l always salute their hard work passion ,l just not remember the name if the boy who is antrapruner he is doing best work for these dabbewalas through his courier business.
Even my father used to get his tiffins service from dabbawala .
Salute to these gentlemen for their descipline & commitment. It's really sad that Covid pandemic has badly affected their livelihood. Definitely they need to be rehabilitated & helped in all respects as their families must also be affected along with them. Banks should extend easy personal loans to enable them establish eateries or other such outlets to enable them eke out their livelihood 🙏🙏🙏

Now a days near corporate office there are homemade food available in lunch hours at very low cost. Cooking food in home is not possible as both husband wife are working not like early were husband use to work.

The Dabbawalas haven't failed , it's just that their concept has been modernized and replaced by the more world class delivery models such as Zomato Swiggy and Uber Eats.
A vast majority of Mumbai's Dabbawalas have switched to these techosavvy delivery models in the last decade or so.
Those who failed to keep pace with changing times have gone for other jobs.
And yes, COVID pandemic since the last couple of years triggered this change.

I think they should start online delivery services too. they will grow more with different dishes and more according to every season.
Online delivery services would be irregular and would differ each day. It won't be possible for them to carry out those irregular ordered in the disciplined manner they have sustained for years
