Great watch, there was a clutch of keepers in the prem in that era who you thought "we need to be on top form to score past them today", Niemi was one of those. From a Bolton fan.
What a keeper he was for us. Remember seeing that save from the villa free kick live and bought the whole of st Mary’s to their feet to applaud, can’t believe it wasn’t in his top 3! Great interview, nice to see how modest Antti is and what high standards he sets for himself. Our best keeper since Shilton, really highlights how lacking we’ve been in that department for a long time.
As a Finn it was so interesting to watch it! Antti is still a national team coach and can analyze really well the game, the plays and the videos. He pointed out an extremely interesting thing: a “great save” looks different for the audiences than for the goalkeepers themselves. Could you next time ask Antti to open that up, explain and analyze it a little bit l - why’s that? I’m sure a super fascinating discussion would follow! A brilliant, original video though, thank you! 🙏
10/10 back in my youth I always had Saints home kit football shirts, but when Niemi was in goal, I had the Orange and then Grey Goalkeeper tops A***** 10/10 Keeper
It’s noticeable how the power of the shot is the main metric by which he judges difficulty. I’d assume angle and height and visibility, but almost all the ‘international’ ones were because he remembered they were hard shots.
There was a save from a cross against Middlesbrough away that didn’t make this. That was his best save for me. It’s was so like no other save I’ve seen before or since.
I thought he was a natural blonde :) Best gk in my lifetime so far, possibly Flowers and peak Forster come close. Shame he ended up at Pompey though, should have stayed at Saints in the Championship i'm sure we would have bounced back earlier.

Amazing keeper and the fact that he is so honest about his faults is a credit to him, too.

What a gk he was! One of the best and we have been blessed in that department. Was it Jones who passed the gloves over?
He’s not finished, he only 28!
What a very nice man

Probably the best GK we’ve had at Southampton
Peter Shilton thanks you.

Hearts 😍
Lo recuerdo en la liga premier inglesa
Probably only 2nd to Peter Shilton for Saints
Lol there’s a Finnish hockey goalie by the name Antti Niemi as well, it’s easy for me to confuse the two lmao
He's not finished he's only 28
If I had to pick between Anti Niemi and Peter Shilton, I would say, very marginally, Anti.
SKATE!! NEVER FORGET OR FORGIVE
How he was never selected for Scotland I'll never know! 🙄
