Japan did not bully Philippines in South China Sea but gave boats to Phil Coast Guard
Definitely not a debt trap. Japan is heavily invested in the Philippines in the manufacturing sector (leading in PEZA) which creates jobs for Filipinos that improve domestic spending and in infrastructure projects (top ODA contributor-3 admins) which further help in economic growth by solving traffic congestion. Japan is protecting its former investments with recent ones. Improving Phil Infra for economic growth is for the interest of Japanese companies already operating in the Philippines. Doing business in the Philippines with poor infra is not conducive. Corporate taxes earned by the government from existing and incoming Japanese companies, and earnings from usage of the railway infra project and from new jobs created contributing to consumption and income taxes will help service the debt. A permanent good infra will attract more foreign investors not just Japanese and create more jobs with more taxes collected or earnings by the gov't.
Very important very
l I love Japan, my favourite neighbour country. ❤
Hoping the Filipino’s will learn the “Mindfulness of Others” mindset the Japanese towards each other where focusing more on other people instead of focusing only on yourself.
The Japanese's "mindfulness of others" mindset has its own set of problems, like discouraging speaking out against abuse out of fear of "Standing out" or "causing problems" for others. As pleasant as Japan is, its society is unironically very repressive, as is most East Asian societies, lol. That isn't to say we shouldn't adapt some of the things that has benefited the Japanese, such as its preventative measures against corruption or whatnot, but expecting the Philippines' society to "be like Japan" is a hard ask, one that many would be very opposed to.

Japanese help to the Philippines is rightfully so. What Japan done to the Philippines in WWll is unimaginable. Japan’s loan to the Philippines is not without conditions. So as what the Japanese done to China, South East Asia and others. Behind Asia, why no mention of China’s so call debt trap to the Philippines for fair comparison?

I heard a lot of horrific stories about what the japanese did to the philippines in WW2. I'm glad they're trying to help the filipinos this time at present
This is so true. However, many Japanese bankers expressed dismay over money lent to the Philippines while there are many more qualified and better nations to lend to. The problem here is that the Philippines have a roller coaster economy. With the interest rate so low, it is prudent to award projects funded by the loans only to Japanese companies.
Because there are still remainingJapanese Wealth in the Philippines and they extracted it in the guise of investment Take it or leave it
Japan has its own domestic problem, too Japan debt is more than 200% of its GDP..Another japan population is getting smaller (fertility problem) and it's aging population,, contribution to its budget are getting smaller and yet supporting a lot of older population through government loans.
As if China doesn’t have problems of their own. Shrinking and aging population and economic woes! At least Japan became rich before stagnation happened. China is falling into a middle income trap!
What about japanese dept trap?
Low interest rate means the meat somewhere, much worse. ADB has been helping and helping, yet the impact seems minimum. Deal mean must buy Japan at 300% of actual price, extra 200% is for lubrication.

Very good, birds of a feather!!! Lol
i appreciate that japan is helping and all but the most BS part of this is that their prioritizing development in a place (Luzon) partly fault of the Philippines Govt' thats already developed, what about the Visayas and Mindanao parts, people will never experience an economic growth if you left out, y'know the rest of the 60% of the country.
Billions of USD, yet those parts of the country where the majority is marginalized get no help in development whatsoever because the focus is always on the Capital. if the other places in the country would be as developed, say Cebu from Visayas or Davao in Mindanao similar to the Capital, we wouldn't have an index of the most crowded density in a City like Manila, because people can find opportunities elsewhere and it would develop the economy in that part of the country.
You can't give to local co or corporation because they're vulnerable to corruption, then the project will be substandard. It is dangerous to give this important project to them.
On the contrary, Japan owes the Philippines a lot from WW2.
REMEMBER WWII
Marcos Gold is in ADB
Do not be to happy any thing they built will be X3 higher but 1% for 40 yrs will never be paid off...
Firstly, the Fed base rate over the past 15 years has oscillated from 1-5%. If Japan is offering the Philippines $multibillion loans at 0.1%, then it is providing the Philippines with loan subsidies. Japan is losing money by lending to the Philippines. The IMF and World Bank lend at 2-3%, and commercial banks would lend to the Philippines at 5-7%. Chinese loans at 3% are not usurous but competitive with what is available by others.
The question for the Philippines is what does Japan expect in return? At the very least it expects a geopolitical alliance in return for its money.
Japan is still paying the Philippines with its word war 2 damages.

If Japan really wants to help the Philippines they should do loan forgiveness.
So 2 questions: (1) Why wouldn't the Philippines just borrow from the Japanese? It's like free money (yes to be repaid but at almost no interest (2) The video's own graphic showed China isn't even number 3 biggest lender to the Philippines - so why are the Filipinos so worked up over China's 3 percent loan which I'm sure no one forced the Philippines to take if what this video presents is indeed true? Something doesn't add up.
If Japan is so good, why did the Philippines even bother to get loans from China in the 1st place? If the loans from Japan are so high, then it means that the loans from China are minimal. No? If the loans from China are so small, where's the debt trap coming from?
