- Here's a list of my power mods and some thoughts on each. This review does not discuss the Pumaspeed X47 hybrid turbo upgrade, but I've made a few other videos on that topic.
As I state in the review, for 90%+ of power gains all you need are the Accessport, custom tune, panel filter, and intercooler upgrade. The other stuff probably adds the last 5-10% of the gains I'm experiencing. All of this is well documented on various Fiesta forums.
I got most of my mods used or on sale and paid much less than full price, but I'm listing the full price below for reference. Shop used!

A must-have mod IMO to go with your first 4 is a better rear motor mount. I got the one from COBB and it makes a big difference when driving hard without adding a ton of vibration to the cabin. It's a cheaper mod and helps a lot.
Really appreciate you breaking down the lowest hanging fruit up front for the stock Turbo folks. Going to do exactly those four things first and then probably on improving handling through suspension upgrades
Props to you for recommending keeping the catalytic converter, 'cat' . The catalytic converter is there for a reason, it's an amazing piece of tech. Plus Cobb and other companies have a high flow catalytic converter for people who think the catalytic converter is restricting flow.

Cool...you still might enjoy the sound of a turboback but that's the only benefit before you upgrade the turbo. Same with intakes.
Nice review! Interesting view on the downpipe reducing top end power. Thinking of going mr230 but not sur I want to lose any grunt in the revs. Also have mountune exhaust and could not agree more. Do feel like it revs a bit happier with it though...
Thanks. There's a good bit of info over at fiestastforum.org about the downpipe stuff. Something about back pressure robbing some power in the higher part of the rpm band. Obviously not all agree with this but I trust my tuner who is the source of this info.
Yeah the exhaust might add a few hp but you know how sound makes us feel the placebo effect.

Have you done or do you recommend any changes to the radiator with turbo upgrade?
I think part of the reason some hoses blow off is that they are lubricated by blow-by. I have a catch can which eliminates that which might help mine NOT to blow off despite the power.
No radiator upgrade, if I tracked the car I would but with my daily driving the temps aren't a problem even in hot GA weather.

Cool. I suggest 2 things:
1. Check out fiestastforum.com for some good conversation and learning.
2. Do upgrades slowly, before going to a hybrid turbo, see what you can do with the stock turbo and experience that before going for big power. A few bolt-ons and a custom tune can do wonders for the stock turbo and it's cheap. Lots of folks go straight to big power and I think they miss out on what the car is all about. It took me nearly 2 years to go hybrid, up till then I enjoyed one mod at a time and it's been a good journey.

So with the strut tower brace, do you have to remove it every time you need to get the engine cover off?
Nope, it slides out of there, just barely but it does come out. I changed my plugs last week with the brace still on. It was in the way but not too bad.
What oil or lube did you use when you installed the piston for the GFB diverter valve? I just ordered mine and most people say to just use oil from the car but I saw some people say they used some kind of thicker lube as well. Thanks.
Yep just motor oil. I have noticed that on long trips (2 hours plus) when cruise is on and boost isn't changing that the DV+ seems to stick. Once I floor it it unsticks. I think the valve gets stuck without being moved in and out of boost. Not a big deal just something to be aware of. If the car shudders upon acceleration after a long drive on cruise control, that's likely the issue. Just floor it, it will unstick, and all is OK again.
Had I to do it over again I'd have used more oil but when I installed it months back I just put a bit on. I might take it apart and re-lube a bit more generously sometime. Great product though hope that helps.
I got catless UEL headers on my BRZ (I know completely different car) and I don’t have a bad smell at all really. In NH as long as you don’t have a check engine light which you won’t with a tune then it’s perfectly legal. Is there a difference in smell, emissions, or power with a turbo or non turboed car like my brz or a fiesta st?
Not sure, I've done catted and catless downpipe and header upgrades on a handful of cars in the past but at this stage in life I will always believe that the cat should stay in the car, both for environmental and personal health reasons, going catless is something I won't do again. I even just bought a new cat for my '98 Civic beater....straight pipe header is cheaper but I don't want to smell all that stuff and spread cancer-causing agents around. Cat would add around 5 HP to the Fiesta platform, not sure about others.
Those hydraulic hood struts. I want them. Are they listed in another video that I haven't seen yet?
And the build number plate you have beside your shifter. Where can I get one?

LOVE your fiesta. i bought a 2017 fiesta back in october of 2017. I want to make more power but want to keep the stock cat. Emissions is really strong where i live. and im shooting for x47 turbo up grade eventually. i have cobb access port, intercooler and whoosh cross over pipe. I'm curious what power figures are people seeing with upgraded turbo but arent replacing everything. Thanks
Thanks Charlie! Very cool, yeah keep that cat it's the right thing to do I think. If you have the mods you listed you'll be around 270-280 depending on what octane you're using. The FMIC, panel filter and custom tune do 90% of the work for power improvement here. I do like the crossover pipe though, I recently (see newer video) swapped my CP-E for the RAMAIR setup which is nearly identical to the whoosh stuff.

gray25xt thanks for the quick reply I watched your videos and bought the pierce 6 point and rear brace. Also have a wilwood front brake kit coming. I would like to see 300 but I honestly don’t want to sacrifice grip for power. 270 sounds nice. I will have 2 tunes for the car 91 and e30 or 40. A shop here quoted me 1000 for dyno time for both tunes. Sounds reasonable to me but I never done a tune this way. Your input would be appreciated! Thanks.
Charlie Smash $1000 is exorbitant. For $350 you can get a lifetime e-tune. I employ Adam at Tune+, check their website. He’s made me about 50 tunes. Safe, quick, and powerful.
Dear sir when you were talking about the Go fast bits Diverter valve and you explained about the low rev making a whistle sound i have the same but only in 5th and 6th gear on the motorway. I have the turbosmart BOV Kompact EM Dual Port (VR2) on the car from the previous owner and i am running only stage 1. Do you think that is just normal or do i need to check and or change to the go fast bits DV?
This is the sort of situation where you will only know by trial and error. There are several things that could cause this noise. I'd suggest you first tighten up ALL boost hose clamps and see if the noise persists. If it does I'd change out the DV and see if that helps.

Looking to upgrade my turbo on my fiesta st what else would I need aside from a downpipe, exhaust, intake and intercooler?

Glad to help. Check out my suspension mods video, I'd recommend the exact mods I discuss there. I spent a lot of time trying this and that and I'm very happy with my setup.
For the red trim on the grill, did you replace the whole grill with a red trim one or did you just add some trim to the exterior?

What about stock cat, and aftermarket cat back? Not trying to make all the power just better sound and maybe a couple ponies
That should change the sound for sure.

Hello, those were aftermarket by a company called Dark Ice designs, they are no longer in business last I checked. I am sure there are other similar products that will work if you search you will find. Fiestastforum is a good place to start. Good luck.

There are many types....K&N, Green, RAMAIR, Cobb makes one, etc. Washable lifetime hi-flow filter. It compliments the intake. The CP-E setup I had in this video features a conical filter but since then I've switched intakes and am now using a panel filter. See my newer videos for more info.

How are those Federals holding the power?
They are great. I still spin tires in 1st 2nd and sometimes 3rd but with traction control added to my tune and customized (I have a video that discusses that) it works. Way better than the stock Bridgestones that's for sure. I think for the money the Federals are a great DD tire, and I've heard they are amazing on the track too though I've never tracked my car.
Bigger turbo fost u need the cpe exhale kit. Unlike hybrid the bov isnt in the turbo anymore
What is that red bar under your hood? Is that a sway bar? Where can I get it?
Front strut bar, you can get them from a variety of manufacturers, just do a search. Does very little for the car in street driving, I removed it and sold it.
I am really looking to upgrade the exhaust on mine purely for sound. But the more I look into it, the more I am nervous bc of the midpipe and muffler essentially being 1 piece.. is it that much of a pain to install? I have done exhaust work before, so that's not hard. I am just worried about getting the stock one off. Also would that, intercooler or access port void the warranty?
Install is super easy, depending on what exhaust you get quality will be different...the Mountune I have is top notch. When you remove the OEM exhaust you have to cut it (unless you remove the subframe which is not a quick job)....I cut mine in one of the straight sections so it would be easy to replace/sell and put together with a quick connect from Autozone should I need to....watch out for the gas tank when you cut it. But exhaust is easy to install. Downpipe to exhaust bolts are known to break on this car and one of mine broke when removing the stock exhaust but not a big deal, just remove and replace.
Anything can void the warranty but it depends on the dealer, if the A/C broke they probably wouldn't void your warranty for an exhaust which is unrelated, but you never know, it's up to the dealer in question.

@@gray25xt I was hoping to keep all the original parts for if I sell it, I can keep it stock. Bc I am kinda imagining the last model year of this car will be worth some money in a couple years. Will the value go down you think if the exhaust is put back together from a cut?
I don't think so, 95% of people aren't even going to look at the exhaust. I mean really how many times have you looked at a car's exhaust system underneath the car before buying it? It's not a big deal I don't think anyone would care even if they saw a patch there.

Do you know if ST parts will fit on base models? I’ve tried researching it but couldn’t find much. I have a 2017 1.0L and want to do some mods to it, but most of the mods I can find are for an ST. I’m just a bit lost
Some will but I'm not sure. Actually the 1.0 is a great platform to mod. I've been looking for a good used one for a 2nd car, and I did some research, there is an ECU upgrade as well as a number of decent mods, search around and you'll find it, there's great fun to be had with that car.

What brand is the ECU remap? I seen one drone bluefin in the uk. But I didn’t know you’re talking about a different one or not. And is there mods I should do before the remap?
I'm not really sure, I don't have the 1.0 so I haven't looked into it too much....I think it's the bluefin though, at one point a few months ago I searched around and found this website/thread, check it out:

Those guys have had success getting the product to work on US spec cars and it's easy. In terms of hardware/other mods again I really don't know, you'd need to hop on that forum or elsewhere and do some research. I can't imagine any hardware is needed though it's just a remap. Though a panel filter would help.
Did you get a check engine light with the downpipe? From what I’ve researched it just sounds like that’s the nature of an aftermarket DP whether catted or not.
No. If you don't change the tune to accomodate the DP you'll likely get a code. If you installed a DP with out a tune you're ruining your car.

Thanks for the video. I’m looking at a fiesta st online. It looks like it has some Cobb aftermarket parts on it. How can I tell if it has a upgraded puma speed turbo on it? There is a “P” decal under fiesta on the back of the car. Unfortunately there’s only 1 pic of the engine bay and it cuts off the intake. It does have the big mouth on it. Any help will be appreciated.
I am very sorry I don't know. I'd suggest posting the ad on fiestastforum.com, that way all the pros can look at the pics and make an educated evaluation.
I doubt it has an upgraded turbo, it's hard to tell because it's buried in there. Plus man of the upgrades use the stock housing so it's pretty impossible to tell.
@@gray25xt thanks for the suggestion of that forum. I did see in the car fax that it had a bunch of service at a performance shop. I might call them up and see if they remember the car. I don’t want to buy someone’s else’s mistake.

Yes JBR and it fills up a few ounces every oil change (5,000 miles).
Any downsides to upgraded intercooler? Condensation, etc? Edit: also, can you upgrade the radiator and IC at the same time?
No downsides at all 4 years later. Radiator upgrade only brings marginal gains unless you're going big power like over 375, and install is a pita.
@@gray25xt cool, thanks for the info. I live in Baltimore, super hot summers. Just wanted to make sure the stock radiator was fine/not starved for air by the IC upgrade.
Any thoughts on doing a higher capacity radiator? I've seen the cooling system including the IC is the weakest link.
The FMIC upgrade is helpful but radiator is only for those who are tracking the car and pushing big power numbers. I've never had a cooling issue at my power level and it's regularly over 100 degrees here in the summer.

@@originaloffical Temps in summer with A/C on hover a bit over 200. I've had the car 5 years and never one issue with temps and the stock radiator here in GA where it's humid and over 100 degrees in July/August. My commute is about 10 miles to work one way with 9 stop lights so it's not city or highway, probably a mix, and I get 29mpg if I drive it hard and about 31 if I'm more chill. That translates to 370 miles per tank on the high end or 330 on the low end. I do have a few intake mods that probably bring my mpg up a bit as compared to stock. So yeah about 30mpgs average in my commute which is both in-town and a bit of interstate driving.

Should be mid 13s depending on driver. Some saw high 12s with these mods.

Which wing risers you have?
These are the Boomba risers. There are other cheaper ones out there but they are plastic. I like the Boomba ones, they are aluminum and very well made.
I have all of those four mods and recently got a custom tune from mountune. After getting dyno'd on a dynapack and it showed me 185whp and 266wtq.
You must be on stock turbo, those are great numbers!!!!
Yeah exactly, stock turbo with all bolt ons besides a dp. So what would you say is the available max power? Sounded like you mentioned bigger numbers are possible with the 4 basic mods (not including dp) but maybe you're quoting those numbers depending on the tuner you select?
Ryan Haugh I have the x47 turbo that’s why I am seeing higher numbers. On stock turbo you might see as high as 220 on pump gas with a tune.
@gray25xt , Hello Gary, would like to thank you for all the great content and quality information you provide. I am a long time car enthusiast and have been researching the Fiesta ST as I am thinking of getting one. Wanted to see if you can provide some help and insight. I test drove a 2014 and it was the first time driving one. Overall I like the look, handling and most else about it. Although I did feel it was severely under powered in all aspects of driving. I am looking for a 18-19 and don’t imagine them being any different., although from what I have read, Ford has made some positive mechanical and overall changes for those model years. So, I would like your thoughts on what exactly would be needed to be safely done to the vehicle to increase HP & TQ enough so it wouldn’t feel or be under powered? Also then would any other modifications be needed after? Also if these modifications would in fact void the factory warranty? I have read the Mountune works with Ford and some of their products many not void that factory warranty, not sure if this is fact or not. Thank You for your time and help, I greatly appreciate it.
You're very welcome. The car feel or being underpowered as you say is subjective so I can't really speak to what would change that feeling for you. The car felt quick to me in stock form and power was just right. So it's really about what makes you feel that the car is adequate.
All mods will void your warranty unless you go with Mountune, but they are very expensive and you have to get Ford to install it if you want to keep the warranty which is very pricey.
Bottom line if you want the car faster you'll need a turbo upgrade and if you want the warranty intact you'll need to go Mountune MRX which will cost in parts and labor much more than another setup like mine.
I'd suggest you get an Accessport first and get a custom tune, intercooler, and panel filter. All that will run you right at $1000 and you'll get about +80 ft/lbs more torque which will make the car more enjoyable for you and it will feel faster. It won't really be that much faster (maybe +30 hp) but it will feel much faster because of the torque. Try that for cheap and if you're not happy go with the turbo upgrade.
@gray25xt, appreciate the quick response and feedback. You are correct and it’s very subjective and a personal thing when it comes to vehicles. Guess a good start is those four modifications you mentioned. As that seems to not be to involved and produced decent gains that should be noticeable. @gray25xt, also if you don’t mind I would value your thoughts and opinion on the mechanical changes to the Fiesta ST throughout the model years? Trying to figure out which is the best model year to purchase. This is what I have read on the forums, what do you think as far as how much a difference / improvement these changes make and which model year would be best?
AXLE SHAFT SEALS improved for 2016 to prevent leaks
COOLANT OVERFLOW HOSE now made of all rubber
CYLINDER HEAD changed for '16, with new P/N This fixed a fire risk which could come after the car overheated from a lack of coolant circulating. The overheating could lead to a cracked block and subsequent oil leak that could ignite. This led to a recall on some '14's and '15's. Issue solved from 2016 model by modifying the coolant passageways (new part # for the head) so there's no hotspot causing failure.
INTAKE Plumbing CCV change for 2016- Possibly to help prevent carbon buildup on Intakes
MAF monitoring/Intake (Air Box),and High Flow Induction Hose changed for 2016
REAR MOTOR MOUNTS stiffened for 2016
SUSPENSION Bushings softened for 2015 Softer springs and shocks all round and a stiffer rear torsion beam and front anti-roll bar both by 33 per cent in an effort to improve both ride quality and handling precision for 2016
New shock P/N reported for '17. I've seen reference to a number of changes on the shock P/N's through the years.
THERMOSTAT changed to a 180-degree one from '18
@@davidzicch2820 Sounds like you have done the research. I really know very little about all of that, I've read some of the same things that you've written here about but you have been far more comprehensive. From what I hear the newer ones have some improvements like any mid-cycle refresh, such as backup camera and better smartphone integration, but at the same time sacrifice a bit of the rawness of the earlier ones. Pretty typical for any car. Hope that helps.

I've heard bad things about Pumaspeed and had a horrible experience myself that left me almost $6k out of pocket for several years as they fought me tooth and nail to not give me a refund for a body kit I ordered they never delivered. It wasn't like they mailed it and it never arrived either because they resold the same body kit, then claimed I 'didn't collect' it (I'm across the planet hence why I had to pay a premium for fucking mail which I never got back sitting around 600 pounds UK).
bashpr0mpt yeah I’ve heard some horror stories sorry to hear yours. I think most of us have had good experiences with Pumaspeed but for the few who haven’t it really sucks. Hope you are able to get it sorted out.

Everytime I get to thinking that I wanna go past Stage 2 E30 on my FiST, I go take a drive in my E85 tuned '18 GT A10 and I realize I need a boosted coyote more than a wilder FiST. Great video though, very thorough.

Whats a panel filter ?
A high flow replacement to the air filter.

@@westtexas501 Yes, replaces OEM, fits just like the stock air filter, only it's higher flow. They call it a panel filter because of the shape, in contrast to conical or other shaped filters. Brands include Green, K&N, Whoosh, RAMAIR, and others.
