- Gành Đá Đĩa is a seashore cliff of interlocking basalt rock columns located in Tuy An District, Phú Yên Province, Vietnam. The area is about 50 meters wide and 200 meters long, consisting of an estimated 35,000 columns of basalt rocks. The rock columns were created from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago when the molten basalt flows met cold water and formed these spectacular polygonal pillars. The basalt rocks have various shapes - round, pentagon, hexagon, polygon, that resemble a gigantic beehive or a pile of plates.
The basalt blocks formed about 200 million years ago are stacked on top of each other in unique shapes thanks to volcanic activity in the Van Hoa plateau (Son Hoa district). Over time, with waves rushing in from the sea, the stone pillars here have not separated or broken but have clung to each other, playing with the sea.
There are many interesting stories related to the formation of Ganh Da Dia. Scientists believe that it was due to volcanic lava erupting into the sea and meeting cold water, freezing. Along with the phenomenon of stress migration, the entire mass of lava cracked, creating the unique and fascinating landscape as it is today.
In the world, besides Phu Yen, there are only a few other places with this phenomenon such as Giant's Causeway (Ireland), Los Organos (Spain) and Fingal (Scotland),...
The closer you get, the more amazed you will be when you see tens of thousands of stone pillars with hexagonal, square or circular cross-sections, layer upon layer, closely arranged as if arranged by human hands. There are places where the stones are stacked high and straight, while others are stacked long or tilted, looking like stacks of plates.
Over time and the waves from the sea, the stone pillars here do not separate or break but cling to each other, layer upon layer stretching out to the ocean.
Ganh Da Dia also attracts viewers with its changing colors according to the sunlight. At dawn, the jet black of the stone blocks is covered with the brilliant yellow light of the bright sunlight at the beginning of the day, typical of the Central Coast. And when the afternoon falls, the red sunset dyes the stone slabs pink. Therefore, each moment of Ganh Da Dia brings visitors different feelings.
