    if mastered in the dark. would it be possible to tape up lots of SLR 35mm film and turn it into a big roll of regular movie 35mm? seems like a dumb question but I've seen that when they restore and digitise films they often tape new bits of film to it.

    In the west motion picture camera stocks have Bell and Howell perforations, but in Russia they have Kodak standard ones, as are used on print stocks, and films for still photography. This means that the registration pins in the camera will fit the perforations in the still film correctly, but will not fit Kodak motion picture stock correctly. This may cause unsteady images, or possibly damage to the perforations.
    Motion picture camera stocks have short pitch perforations, while I think still picture films are standard pitch. I can’t remember the numbers now, the difference is small, but cause problems if you run the film through a contact printer. If you’re just scanning the film, or running it through an optical printer. Have you had problems from this? Have you tried using Kodak motion picture stock yet?
    From memory on 16 mm standard pitch is 0.3 inch, and short pitch is 0.2994 inch, and on 35 mm the difference will be even smaller because the pitch is less.

    Loving your analogue film videos and looking forward to your test footage of the three. I'm just experimenting with super 8 currently and plan to develop my first cassette soon in a lomo tank I picked up a while ago. The Russians made some great stuff for the home developer including reloadable cassettes I'd like to get a couple of.
    If you can find a lomo 1A (I think) developing tank that will do 8, 16 and 35mm.

      Shanks FX They're very cool but unfortunately not cheap because as far as I know lomo were one of only 2 companies that made cine film dev tanks. I plan to upload a video soon showing my lomo tank and and how to load and use, will give you a shout when I do. I need to figure out also how to open my exposed super 8 in a a way that will enable me to reload and re-use it.

    a tip, with lenses, LEICA had a M 42 mount on their early 1G etc. series of M cameras, as they are well known for ALWAYS staying true to "old users" they made a M 42 Leica M bayonet mount ( the one they use on the M 240 etc. today)- ALL you need is this adaptor and you can use ANY Leica lens EVER MADE , even the 50 mm f 0.95 if that is bokeh enough for this type of camera!! This means you have an of the shelf solution, and it screws the lens on so it won't come off.

    Hi, thanks for amazing series! Actually you inspired me to bring my dad's old Super8 camera back to life. I absolutely love the first minutes of Galaxy Gulch, is there any progress regarding this movie?

    Hey there!
    I've got a question regarding the intro, the intro music/sound is really distorted in a way, which is a property of old videos and audio. Is there a good way to reproduce that?

    • @ShanksFX1
      @ShanksFX1  7 років тому

      Think I put some old projector hum in the background of this intro. But intro is already from the 70s, so its already pretty authentic. Prob cutting off the dynamic range on both low end and high end, so it has a little bit a an 8-Bit feel.

      I actually mean how the tone if off, like, exactly the opposite of autotune. Like a bad singer.

    When you used the M42 Helios prime lens that's usually used in 35mm still photography , did the camera also accept the k-3 lense (sorry messaging on my phone, couldn't look up exact specifications)

    Wait, Russian cameras had still to be cranket in the 50s? That can't be right.

    How did you convert the still test roll footage into digital? You have telecine equipment?

      Photo store gives you the option to having negative scanned for a few bucks more. I also have a fairly cheap film scanner at home.

    Helios aperture fix: just use Cyanoacrylate, 1 drom. you don't need a washer

    • @ShanksFX1
      @ShanksFX1  7 років тому

      Ahh, that would be much easier to use some sort of glue like that, so you don't have to open up the lens.
