Nice job Whip! I rebuilt the engine on the Craftsman about 2 years ago. Honed cylinder, new piston rings, etc. It’s been a fantastic engine. Last I checked compression was still right around 147PSI. Tons of torque from this little 17HP. It always gets early oil changes because I baby it. I’ve since switched to Fram Ultra XG3614 and ST Full Syn 4-Cycle 10W-30.
I'd like to see the regular Kohler filter and the Kohler Pro (the one that offers 300hrs in between changes) to see the differences between the two. Just an idea if you're looking for content ideas.

I've been wondering what those 3614's look like inside since it cross references from the Mopar MO-409. I wonder what the Supertech version of the MO-090 looks like. I think a WIX or Supertech MP would be a good alternative to the Kohler filter.
I'm confused as to why some of the ST-10k mile filters have metal endcaps and some don't, I saw a previous video with a "blue" ST-10k mile filter that had metal endcaps but the "white" ST-10k filter in this video has non-metal end caps.
Ya and i noticed the st ones have drain back valves usually but not on this one how strange and usually doesnt have all those extra holes either like this one does
Owning a lawn tractor with a Kohler engine, I have always used the OEM filter when changing the oil and it always cost more than $10. Thanks to Whip, I now know that there is nothing special about the filters other than they cost twice what the same filter with a different color and sticker costs.
Yep, while I like all Whip's filter dissections, this one provides an eye opener for folks using OPE filters. The equivalent automotive application at least as good, but often better OEM, and for much less cost.
I opened one of these recently. After about 100 hours it was very clean (as expected) but the anti drain back/bypass valve appeared fairly stiff and warped (kinda) I doubt that it was working very effectively as an anti drain back valve. As Pete has recently opened a new Kohler Yellow filter they are made by a different manufacturer these days.
Interesting! I run this filter on my son's '13 Ford Focus Duratech and typically go with the Supertech MP version which clearly based on your tear down is the better filter. However, this last change I went with the lower end (white) Supertech filter and do note that it actually has a black ADBV on it! So not the same as the one you show so for ~$3 less it's not actually that bad of a filter for a basic 5K oil change.
Seeing as the ST looks identical to the Kohler I'm going with that. I put maybe 30 hours a year on my tractor and change the oil every 2 years. Thanks for saving me some cash!
I think that the MP oil filter has 110 sq-inches of filtering [2.05x54] making it the filter that I would choose. I use Supertech synthetic oil in my ride-on mower and after a full season, the old oil looks exactly like the new oil fresh from the container.
Nope in the video the MP is 1.58x54 making it 85.32 sq inches just as he states, so it definitely has the smallest filtering surface capacity of the three. Now as far as I'm concerned, I want filtering first out of an oil filter, so I'd probably go with the ST before the MP for my Kohler 24hp engine, especially since it's identical to the manufacturer's recommended Kohler filter and a lot cheaper
@@Andrew__Smith The nitrile adbv also acts as a cheap bypass (combo)valve too. Why the extra central set of holes on base plate. Don't sweat the design details. It's totally a cost saving measure instead of using a real poppet dome bypass like the MP has. Much as nitrile adbv reliable for shorter interval, and since bypass combined, same goes for it.
