I’ve seen some videos, read some stuff, and talked with a few people who lived in the USSR claiming a very intricate democratic process the Soviet union enjoyed? On the other hand, I grew up knowing some people that lived in the Soviet Union that claim it was very undemocratic and where the gov chose the candidates opposed to what the other people say of workplaces and local communities? Growing up in the states, frankly, you get the impression that a large majority of people don’t even know who the representatives or senators are, have absolutely no idea what’s going on in their local government, and really only come out to vote for POTUS? Balfour violently crushed Irish land reform, socialism, and republicanism, and signed away half of Palestine. It was kept on life support through supply convoys of 200-ish aid trucks daily. And now, since October, not even 100 trucks have entered. If your goal is to snuff out a terrorist cell, why would you deliberately starve an entire population of 2.5 million? If world war 2 was treated the same way as this, then the allies would have been intentionally bombing german houses and hospitals while ignoring industrial and military targets, though a clear distinction is that nearly all germans during ww2 did genuinely support the nazis. But also to say that i come from a family thats jewish (anti-religious) and communist for generations, and i always just received it as a fact that israel was bad news from the start. Growing up it was easy to dislike israel based on the current events, and it was logical to fight them, but i regret not asking my grandfather why he was so critical (angry) from the beginnnig, because it was hard for me to find historical books that would give me an honest story. I was growing up in the rural US. It felt like the people who were opposed to israel were operating word-of-mouth, and all the published information leaned in favor. So I felt like i was faced with one of life’s great mysteries: one day israel appeared and began to do bad things while the world sang their praises. Its really UA-cam that began filling in the holes- at least for me - first came the videos, the video’s dropped the names to research, and the titles of the books etc. This particular video, and the one that cae before it, are exceptionally good. Its important work. Its not a topic thats too complicated, but it is complicated to unearth the topic because all the people involved did really good work of mystifying the information…. It’s almost like they knew that they were acting in bad faith.

The left in Israel is calling for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and have a stronger stance against settlement in the west bank. I'm glad you made the connection between Balfour in Ireland and Palestine. Our histories cross over at a good few points and so we have a deep deep affinity for one another. Balfour violently crushed Irish land reform, socialism, and republicanism, and signed away half of Palestine. It was said by the governor of Jerusalem in the thirties that their goal was to create a "little loyal Jewish Ulster [northern province of Ireland] in a sea of potentially hostile Arabism" when trying to partition Palestine for their own security advantages. They tried to do the same shit of skewing demographic majorities and spooking the powerful minority into thinking there was an impending genocide coming from the colonised people. Then you fast forward to labour unrest in the North where they unfurl Arabic banners to tell the crowd to disperse because the soldiers had just come from Palestine, or the Black and Tans going to Palestine, or the IRA and PLO training together in the 80s, or both countries striking in support of the ANC. Ireland is a country that NEVER protests but when I tell you the streets are flooded with people protesting for Palestine I am not fucking joking.
Ireland had in fact the largest European, per head of population, mass protests and local actions against water charges and water privatisation in 2014 - 2016
Of course to look at mainstream media or it's archive records you would never know this.
And yes we have massive protests now for the Palestinian people and against the ethnic extirpation there ( not "cleansing", mark it well) and the genocidal actions of the occupation forces of Israel.

If world war 2 was treated the same way as this, then the allies would have been intentionally bombing german houses and hospitals while ignoring industrial and military targets, though a clear distinction is that nearly all germans during ww2 did genuinely support the nazis. If you don't think that this is a war of conquest, then tell me what Israel has been doing the past 80 years of slowly stealing villages around Gaza and in the West Bank

Thank you for this. Im commenting to boost. But also to say that i come from a family thats jewish (anti-religious) and communist for generations, and i always just received it as a fact that israel was bad news from the start. Growing up it was easy to dislike israel based on the current events, and it was logical to fight them, but i regret not asking my grandfather why he was so critical (angry) from the beginnnig, because it was hard for me to find historical books that would give me an honest story. I was growing up in the rural US. It felt like the people who were opposed to israel were operating word-of-mouth, and all the published information leaned in favor. So I felt like i was faced with one of life’s great mysteries: one day israel appeared and began to do bad things while the world sang their praises.
Its really UA-cam that began filling in the holes- at least for me - first came the videos, the video’s dropped the names to research, and the titles of the books etc.
This particular video, and the one that cae before it, are exceptionally good. Its important work. Its not a topic thats too complicated, but it is complicated to unearth the topic because all the people involved did really good work of mystifying the information…. It’s almost like they knew that they were acting in bad faith.

I as an Israeli jew found this video very informative and interesting but a problem I have with it is the sharp transition to modern day politics.
The left in Israel is calling for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and have a stronger stance against settlement in the west bank. (if you are wondering in the left there is no question about settling Gaza, we're against it)
so I don't really understand the sentence "continuing its left settler colonial legacy"
