Hi Richard I'm a kitchen installer here in the UK. Just wanted to thank You and encourage You that I admire your work greatly and have picked up some amazing tips and tricks from You. Keep up the fantastic work. Bless You Bro.
This is one of the first videos saw of yours, Richard. I was just going to put up some crown moulding in my apartment, but I fell into the world of trim carpentry and now I'm working on my second wainscotting project after having done my bedroom. complete with three stage crown, 2400mm (48 inch) wainscot and 225mm Victorian skirting. I also dressed up a plain apartment window with a craftsman window trim with window sill and plantation shutters (the shutters were a bit much for me - I had to get them made). I had zero idea about any of this before I started watching your videos. Not only are you a fine craftsman, but you explain things in a way that is easy to understand. Thank you for teaching me!👍🙂
I have watched you since day one , you have done well for yourself expensive exotic materials , top of the line professional equipment, the most difficult and complex high accuracy single finish and trim carpentry project that last months and months . But you know what , I really miss the “ Cardboard finishing Carpenter” regular guy the trolls used to make fun of . That guy that I could relate to . 😢
Regarding the Base and Crown Molding dilema faced by those of us who aren't working full time in finish carpentry - You have the BEST videos. Thank You very much for the work you put into these teaching videos.
Richard, that's the difference between a laborer and a fine craftsman, a standard return would look very nice but your return has that WOW factor. I'd name it the ELEGANT return.
I agree, I will never reach that standard. Im a new starter but what a great guy he is in explaining the method and it gets my jobs done to a happy mediocre standard haha
love your videos. helped me do my wainscotting in my hall. as you can tell from that statement I'm from England. one thing I did struggle with was obtuse angles for down the stairs. you said in your video divide the digital angle by 2 but I kept getting uneven angles. then someone said you take away 90 degrees then divide by 2, this has done the trick. That said I do love your videos and your family are cute. keep up the good work as I am a single mum and doing it myself is the cheapest option. Abeit not to the standard you are use to but it has helped me so much in lock down to keep sane. so thank you from the Smith family in Liverpool
hi Mick from Ireland Dublin.luv ur stuff.40 years in the same game.picked up alot of tips.just shows Every Day Is A Learning Day.Gud Luck wit your Buissness .keep tje Vids going 💪
You sir are a true craftsman. Its truly hard to find people who truly have a passion for what they do. The average homeowner will never appreciate what you do, keep up the good work. I'll be cutting this return tmrw.
Thank you for the tips on crown molding and base boards P.S. I really wish I seen your videos before I did my house remodel . but the good thing you show me how to fix my mistake I made lol thank you
Richard, I would like to thank you for making this video. I tried it today, and MAN it looks like a Million bucks. Thank you again sir and God Bless you and your family.
Great trade secrets here! You deserve to get paid for this valuable lesson. I hope these videos bring in substantial cash flow as you produce content that helps the masses. Thank you for your effort; I will be sure to use your affiliate links when making purchases. ALSO, I just watched you latest video on repairing a framers baseboard instal. I have a great deal of respect for those who choose not to drag others through the mud in order to make themselves feel better. You were not condescending in the least like many in the trades often are. All around, keep up the good work, you will be blessed for it! I just liked and subscribed.
Hey I just started watching your videos and I wanted to let you know that you are awesome and thank you for sharing. I am an HVAC & R master technician. I buy houses on a side fix and flip them. Your explanation formulas and technique has made me an excellent trim finisher and I wanted to say thank you...
Bro, I just did this a couple hours ago. Pulled it off and I am terrible at crown. But this came out looking pretty good. Thank you for showing us how.
Dude, thank you! My wife wants crown moldings in the our family room and I wasn’t sure how to end it where the ceiling meets the stairway. Now I know. Love the videos.
You explain the process so well! Few minutes later I'm trying to process what you said, That I've watched this video a dozen times! (backward upside down left side....huh?) Thanks!
Richard, Your videos are outstanding. I continue to learn every time I watch. Also, your glue is the best I've ever used. Don't know how I got along without it. Keep up the good work, and thanks for sharing all your tips and techniques.
Do appreciate you sharing your supreme skills !!! Not Everyone would take the time to do so !!! New subscriber and looking forward to upcoming vids... Thanks again and keep up the Great work
Thank you so much! I have a couple of returns I’ve been agonizing over for days and your video is so clear and easy to understand that I am no longer afraid! Just one simple question…. How far away from the end of the wall do you cut the main piece so that the “fancy return” ends in the right place?
Great video. I love watching your videos, I always learn something new, and your production quality is great!. The only thing I wish you would have done, is shown an image of one installed. I can picture it in my head, but still would have been cool to see a final product picture.
Richard, It takes a lot to be good... and just a little more to be great... those two extra cuts and your crown return is 10 times better... NICE! Curious if you've tried the aerosol CA activator instead of the pump-spray type you use here? It seems to me like the aerosol gives a quicker set and I like its finer mist, but you do a LOT more trim using it than I do so I know you've got solid reasons for the choices you make. Best, Matt
Very nice detail. Would love to see some "wrap up" videos for the jobs you're doing. I'm just talking about 2-3 minutes showing the end product (if the customer would allow it). Might seem boring to you, but I love seeing the "before" and "after" on trim work. Also I am REALLY LOOKING FORWARD to the custom house you may be a part of. Keep up the great work.
We'll be moving into a new home soon and I plan to do all the crown molding, chair rail and picture frame wainscot. (builder wants $700 to just do crown in a 9 x 12 dining room). I like your treatment on the crown and will try it to see how it works in my case. Question: Sometimes when I make the outside corners with chair rail, the sharp corners create a hazard. I usually sand them to soften the edge, but I am wondering if you ever used this 22.5 degree method to create softer corners? Great tips I will use in my new home.
You have mastered your craft spot on. I would waste a 10' piece trying to do that. I see the 2 metal clips on the base of your saw to hold the piece at the proper angle, never seen those before.
Thank you so much for this video. Need to make some returns for entering a staircase all your videos help so much been a huge fan for along time learn so much from watching
Very nice video. Just finished watching 4 or 5 of them. I always learn a little, or lot of new techniques. Have you done a video on trimming out a window (here in the lower Midwest they call them palladium windows) which is just a regular window but the top of the window is a half round arch. Any tips on trimming out a window like that. I really enjoy the laid back style. Maybe sometime you can make a 3-4 part video showing say each of the stages of a coiffured ceiling, such as layout, how to Mount the substructure, etc... Thanks again for the great videos. You guys do great work on your projects. Ron
I've always called this a double return. I never do the regular return. Just a little extra work for a much better look. I'd like to see you do a jig video. I know a lot of finish carpenters like me always got little home made jigs in their tool pouches. I'd like to see what you got, like I have an 8th and quarter inch reveal marker for casing, a rounded corner jig so all my rounds are the same size, and much more.
Hey! A guard on your saw....well done. I'm running my own crown next month and I'm going to use this. How short do you leave your long piece before you start your return? Or is it trial and error? Thanks!
Hi Richard, thank you for the videos. I appreciate the level of professionalism and care you take to demonstrate your skills. They've made quite a difference in my skill level and my house is grateful. I have a question about the miter saw, if I may. Do you find any downsides to using a 12" miter saw over a faster 10" or smaller saw? Is the one you are using in this video the DWS780? Thank you.
You should check out the zero clearance tape from fast cap. I use it on both my miter saws and absolutely love it! It's only $5 for 5 strips so once you do a bevel or a compound cut it's not expensive to replace.
I'm a beginner at crown molding. I watched this video to see how to do the return stop. Long story short, I cheated and used caulk to join my pieces, will that work too?
Richard, love your instruction vids and the classy style of your work. I have a question. How would you do crown where it has to end. My scenario is the wall for my staircase going upstairs is shared with my living room wall but theres no where to really continue a crown return. It just needs to end at the front 4-6” face. How do i do that and make it look nice
Great video. I am going to try and adapt that for use with a 3-piece crown I am currently doing. Looks great! Have you ever done that on inside corners as well?
Hey Richard, how you doing bro.....first at all thanks for share your knowledge, i learn a lot with your videos.....so, what do yo think about the Cope technique for crown molding?
Richard does this change measurements at all? Example; what if your fancy return is going to an outside corner and the measurement is 100" from return to corner, for an arbitrary number?
Thanks for the lesson. We couldnt get our eye full because the camera was on the right. While you could see the result clearly but the camera got a view from an angle on the other side.
Amazing! Thanks! I never thought of doing one like this, I will experiment and give it a try. I have used CA glues on model aircraft building for years, looks like a natural here as well.
Not entirely related to the video but I figured I'd ask... I just moved into a place that was built in the late 1800s and the building has shifted quite a bit over the years. Id love to put in (or have put in) some crown molding but the door frames are wildly unlevel as is the ceiling. Is there any work arounds or do I have to basically rebuild the whole wall first?
Hello . I'm watching a older video of you doing crown at your house . Why do you hold your crown with the wall edge up against your fence and the ceiling down on the saw
Great work as usual. Curious....what type of glue are you using? I heard you say "CA glue" but not a specific type or brand. Can you provide a link? Or just the name so we can try it out? Keep up the good work.
Tons of nice homes in Texas, this guy will never run out of work.
Thats a nice detail.

Kat Smith I’m thinking of starting my own crown moulding business as well. How hard was it for you to get started?

Great video! Thanks for the help. FYI: For my 5.25" moulding the turn took 2.5" off the long piece.
Great help. That is exactly the cut I've been having a problem with to run Crown molding under the vaulted ceiling of my kids dormer window
I don't plan on cutting fancy molding but I really like all these videos he puts out. I feel like I'm always learning just by watching... Great stuff!
You make it look so easy. Thanks for the great videos.

I'm a beginner at crown molding. I watched this video to see how to do the return stop. Long story short, I cheated and used caulk to join my pieces, will that work too?
Very nice cuts. That would look great on a cabinet top.
Great video, Richard the CA glue is awesome stuff.
Rick Washek thanks rick.
Xan u give me the name of the glue and where you buy please

Wood you believe it;) I learned something new today that I'm going to try. Thank you for making this video.
Smart tips and very very helpful thanks
Awesome job. True craftsman
Thanks for the lesson.
We couldnt get our eye full because the camera was on the right. While you could see the result clearly but the camera got a view from an angle on the other side.
That would make such a great window top moulding with a small ledge to display things over windows. Thank you
That is really awesome looking. Love your videos man!!!!
Richard do you ever recommend moulding types to customers. For example if they want a modern crown or modern base what do you recommend to them?
Amazing! Thanks! I never thought of doing one like this, I will experiment and give it a try. I have used CA glues on model aircraft building for years, looks like a natural here as well.
Andrew Barkley we use this style to go around corners with base moulding as well. It's all about the details.
It seems every time i watch one of your videos I’m like wow. Thanks for putting work your on here for us to see.
Very cool. Had to watch it about 4 or 5 times, but very cool.

Whoever showed you , blessed you. Not to take Away from your ability.
Very nice look! I'm gonna try that one.
Oh yes... Thanks for the signed shirt from you and the Idaho painter. I got it!
