Thank you so much you've given me the confidence to get on on and deal with the ticks that are on my garden hedgehogs. I removed 30 ticks from each of my 3 dogs after a visit to Exmoor last year, but I thought it would frighten the hogs if I handled them. I'm super squeamish and don't like killing anything but OMG these ticks are just vile. Bless You.

hey i'm sorry to bother you! i work as a hedgehog rescue center in the netherlands. i think it's really great what you do but i just what to say to be careful when handling wild hedgehogs. the animals may be infected with worm infections, pests, fungus or other non-visible diseases. They need specific medical care, which is only available in specialized hedgehog shelters. Hedgehogs are protected animals, it is therefore forbidden to care for the animals themselves.
A hedgehog is in need if :
If he is injured (a hedgehog that stinks, is certainly injured)
    - If there are flies or maggots on it
    - If he is caught in something
    - If he is not rolled up and has his eyes closed
    - If he does not roll up when you turn him on his side
    - If he has cough of dirty eyes
    - When he wiggles back and forth
    - If he walks around in circles
    - If he threatens to drown in a pool pond
    - If all the spines are flat, even if you touch them
    - If his winter test is disturbed and can not stay there anymore
a hedgehog that walks around during the day doesn't have to be sick but most of the times they are.
i'm sorry for my shitty english and the long reaction

Hi I watched your video and would like to say thank you. It really helped me out with a tick my dog had on her brow. After getting it off with the tools you have I then noticed really tiny ones near the same place so I brought some tick tablets. I think we have hedgehogs in our garden. Not sure if my dog had tried to pick one up and caught a tick that way. I absolutely love what you're doing for the hedgehogs ❤ Great work 🙂

He is one year old, and I bought him when he was 50 days. I love him. You are an angel. Excuse me, my English is not so good. “ Your English is actually pretty good, considering there was not much to change.

Hi, I live in 'Oz', wish we had little cuties like her to look after occasionally instead if we go hunting in our gardens we're likely to step on a taipan or red belly black snake or a funnel web spider or even a frilled neck lizard, there are cute marsupials like sugar gliders & the like but they mainly come out at night and are very timid and not easily caught which is a good thing, wild animals should be left to their own devices and know how, the law of nature, although you offer these gorgeous creatures some respite from those ghastly poisonous ticks while also giving them healthy food to eat, great job & very well done...

  • @PatyBN
    @PatyBN 5 років тому +7

Touch the small ones with a cutip drenched in acetone, they usually let go. It's sad to have the hedgehog suffer while waiting for the ticks to grow big.

Fantastic informative video, many thanks for posting it. I have been feeding and looking out for hedgehogs for over ten years now, but the local "rescue" centres are, quite frankly, less than helpful 🤬. One of the local ones has even died without passing on his "knowledge" to anyone willing to give it a lash. At this time of year none are interested to help as they are full and will not give any further advice apart from try XYZ who are also "full" 🙄. I know the basics; bring them in, keep them warm, give the correct food and water but the rest of the required care is not forthcoming 😟. I know that they are wild animals and not pets but I care and want to see them healthy and safe in the wild. I have detained one for a couple of weeks and released it after two weeks in early summer after I found it poorly out and about during the day. I have also managed to overwinter one that I found that was way too small to survive at around about this time of year. I currently have another one in the detention centre since Friday as it was only 348g when I picked it up. I did spray it with "fly strike" straight away which at the very least seemed to piss the flees off (I suspect that they were dying while leaving the ship 😉 🤣) but it also has at least one tick that hasn't left the boat. I have ordered some tick removal tools (we have got some somewhere but it's cheaper and easier to order more 😉 🤣) but I would like to ask what you would recommend for other parasites and how you would administer them (mainly worms)? I have found some drugs but they are mostly by prescription only and previously I have found most vets less than helpful as well ☹ "have you tried this rescue place" Duh yes and they had just as shite a reply. Hope you can provide a little help and advice, stay safe and well, GIRL (it's a made up acronym, check out the "about" tab for details), cheers, Schnuz.

Thank you all the tips managed to get out three ticks off the hedgehog in my garden. However there’s two on it’s head I couldn’t get to. It wouldn’t uncurl. I will try again tomorrow night. They are wonderful creatures ❤️

To catch thieves in the act to provide Police with evidence you could try and use something like a “ trail cam “ a Camera designed for filming wildlife that has a motion sensor so it only starts recording to a sdcard when something moves within its field of view. Unlike CCTV that you would need to leave recording 24 hours a day and then somehow find the time to look back through hours of footage to find the point where something happened after it happened. I know about “Ring” branded doorbells but they would be fixed in one spot on your door and that may not cover the area you need to protect eg you may not park your car right in front of your car door. Or if you have thieves coming over your rear garden fence etc to look in sheds for example a camera on your front door isn’t going to help.
I Bought a number of a brand called “ Bushnell” after seeing them used on a very good BBC TV show where they were trying to film rare animals in a jungle somewhere. The model I bought was called a “ Bushnell 119440 “ they vary in price so shop around Amazon is not the best price quite often these days so shop around www.amazon.co.uk/Bushnell-119440-Nature-Camera-Colour/dp/B00AU6E2TO they were averaging £260 each in June 2014 on Amazon when some shops were advertising them for up to £340 ! , as I still use mine I can show you how to set this model up. They can record in infrared even if its pitch black outside ( video will look black and white when recorded at night) or in Colour that’s full HD 1080p quality in daylight. I set mine to record for 60seconds at a time when its triggered.( you can set them to record for shorter chunks of time if you wish) By now late 2019 the model number has likely changed to some newer model but they will be very similar. They run off 12 AA batterys. There is a forum about trail cameras i used www.chasingame.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=22 where people discuss the latest models of this product category so by all means join that to find out more.
You get a nylon material strap to attach the camera trap to trees etc but depending on where you intend to set it up you might want to buy a metal case to put it in that’s lockable so thieves cant take it. camlockbox.com/ is where I bought the metal case designed to fit the Bushnell 119440 exactly ( you will need to buy a case that fits the exact camera trap model you purchase so that it doesn’t block any sensor etc) buy Master lock python cable locks to secure the camera and case to a tree or post etc store.camlockbox.com/master-lock-camo-python-cable-8418kadcamo/
Here is a video of mine that shows the equipment I use “ Hedgehogs & Bushnell camera trap 24oct14 Cambridge UK 938p ua-cam.com/video/9Hl6SeZ6pEs/v-deo.html if you go to my UA-cam account ua-cam.com/users/AwesomeFullHDvideosvideos then click on playlists then click created playlists then scroll down until you find the playlist called “ Bushnell Camera traps DIY etc 29oct14” which is this link ua-cam.com/video/NPgTjRjDH68/v-deo.html watch those videos to see the equipment I use and a way to hide them very well so thieves or wildlife cant see them . I also bought another thing to put out more infrared light at night to boost the quality of recording I was getting at night you will see it mentioned in my videos. They are called Uway xtendir and I bought them online from Canada or USA( they use 4x D Cell batterys) they made a big difference to the quality of records filmed when its dark and are amazing if filming wildlife that within 5 or 6 feet of the camera.
Another playlist to look at is “ Camera traps for wildlife “ which is this ua-cam.com/video/mh54e175VOU/v-deo.html you will see the incredible quality Bushnell’s can film in
Also look in Hedgehogs 15oct14 playlist here and you will see videos I recorded using the camera traps ua-cam.com/play/PLiVKwaUJvwmUzIF0A3J985Fl1UL4ppzKt.html
There are other makes and models of camera traps out there but in general the cheaper they are the lower the quality so if your trying to protect your car/home/garden/shed etc from thieves I would buy the better brands eg Bushnell & if there is a spate of thefts in your area set up multiple cameras if you can afford to. Remember to read up on the law of using CCTV on your property eg www.gov.uk/government/publications/domestic-cctv-using-cctv-systems-on-your-property/domestic-cctv-using-cctv-systems-on-your-property
    Hope this helps
    Dave
Ps as I said im happy to answer questions if you post them on my UA-cam videos ( post a comment on the relevant video ) I will see them most days when I look at comments I get on all my videos and I will reply back usually within 24-48 hours , thanks
If you think theyre going to steal your Car fit a tracking device to the car, fairly cheap sim card based trackers are on Ebay etc .

Nice work! Disgusting little critters ticks are, aren't they! I've had to remove a few from my dog. That tool works a real treat!

My wild hedgehog in the garden has got some super tiny black ticks around his eyes. Much too small for the tool, and impossible to get a hold of with tweezers without getting his hair too. I can't figure out how to get rid of them. I wonder if oral medicine flea/tick meant for cats is ok for hedgehogs. At this point my hoglet is only 285 grams (I found him at 113 grams) though.

Im just wondering with the amount of hedgehogs you get in your garden do you find that you have very few slugs as i know that they do feast on the slugs and now many ppl find the amount of slugs has greatly increased which i do think is down to ppl erecting many more fences in their gardens compared to years ago making it difficult for the hogs easily accessing gardens nowadays.

    • @AwesomeFullHDvideos
      @AwesomeFullHDvideos  7 років тому

yes they are getting fenced off, but they can dig under a fence they only need a 3inch gap but urbanisation is hurting them but more likely its the explosion in rat numbers as rats get food people put out for hogs.yes hogs eat slugs ive seen them do it and worms but i notice when it rains slugs climb up walls thus out of reach of hogs
