    Why and How to Use a Dermaroller to fight Hair Loss!
    Hey my Fellow Follicle Frontiersmen! In this video I will explain how dermarolling or microneedling can be used to augment a hair loss regimen that includes finasteride and minoxidil. Of course, derma rolling can be used on it's own and will likely yield limited results dependent on how aggressive your own hair loss is. But it absolutely works best when partnered with finasteride and minoxidil, as is supported by studies on the effect of microneedling on hair regrowth.

    My hair began thinning when I turned 27. I freaked out, so I started to do tons of research and tried pretty much everything. The only set of things that had any noticeable effect was:
    1. Microneedling with a 1.5mm once a week.
    2. Applying rosemary oil to my scalp every night.
    When I was using a 0.5mm dermaroller, it maintained the rate of my hair loss. It stopped it from getting worse, but it didn't stop it neither. I maintained a steady loss of about 20-25 hair strands every time I washed my hair.
    When I moved to a 1.5mm (what was used in a highly referenced study) micro needling "stamp" and applying rosemary oil every night, my shedding after washing my hair went from 20-25 strands, to less than 5 within a month. With my new routine, the corners of my hairline have started to regrow and my hair loss rate has seriously decreased.
    What may work for me, may not work for you. Perhaps 0.5mm is all you need. I hope this helps anyone reading!

      I would like to echo what you said and say go with a 0.5mm and then see what your results are over the course of a few months. It’s an inexpensive option to try and almost everyone can tolerate it.
      I’m glad you had such a great outcome. Have you ever talked about in a UA-cam video before?

    I started using the same derma roller on May 17th. I use a shampoo for hair loss and apply a special plant-based serum for hair loss, nothing else, and no Minoxidil. I figured, if I ever get results, I want them to stick, so the process has to be as natural as possible. I derma roll twice a week (0.5mm). I am very surprised. I can see hair growth in the back/middle section of my head. It's amazing. But I need to be patient and wait for like 3 months to be sure of the quality of the new hair.

    Another good tip for people trying to keep their hair is to get a good shower water filter. They're not that expensive and spare your hair, scalp and skin being pelted by toxicity in the water supply which can be harsh on your scalp and skin. Massaging with a strong steady motion ( not to the point of pain ) with a wooden bristle brush increases blood flow and breaks up calcification in the scalp. Look into a good natural shampoo too that is clean with natural ingredients can only be a good thing towards keeping what hair you have and possible hair regrowth.

    Dermarolling is great and also basically kept me from quitting Finasteride because I have a rare side effect where Fin causes melasma (hyperpigmentation) on the cheeks, kinda like a pregnant woman would get it during pregnancy when the hormones go crazy. I hope Dermarolling can treat it combined with Vitamin C Serum

    • @keratinbrotherhood
      @keratinbrotherhood  5 років тому

      Somberlain, that’s a unique side effect for sure. In one of the research studies I referenced for this video discussed the positive outcome of derma rolling and vitamin c serum. I don’t personally have hyperpigmentation; but I’d love to hear about your progress while using it.

      @@keratinbrotherhood I think it only has a chance to occur for people who have really light skin, that side effect was yet undocumented when I started taking Fin I believe but there are some mentions of it now. It makes sense though, seeing how hormonal changes can cause this in women too. It's known as "mask of pregnancy" because hormonal changes of that degree are normally exclusive to women. I'm gonna report back but it will probably take months to see results, ugh

  • @federalnoise
    @federalnoise 3 роки тому +3

    I been doing this around 6 months. One thing, for aggressive loss in males especially, it is highly likely due to high testosterone. In some countries you can get drug finastride as a blocker but there are side FX, also pumpkin oil does same thing. Biotin is actually a vitamin, not a blocker, for anyone concerned. Minoxidil is useful though for mild hairless and does play a role in prevention further loss. Generally speaking dermarolling is a useful thing in aggressive hairloss. A 0.5mm roller for scalp. 2mm for arms and belly or fat areas in general to tighten skin or stretch marks over time.

    The class I took on hairloss says to use at 2.0 mm the same length used for transplants. You'll need treatments less and see quicker results. Of course it'll vary, but that's what I was taught.

    • @keratinbrotherhood
      @keratinbrotherhood  5 років тому +8

      Cre, thank you for your feedback. 2mm is a bit long for household use and most guy don’t know how to use a smaller gauge (0.5-1.0mm) properly. A longer gauge like a 2.0mm used properly is an effective measure to spur collagen production; but the worry is that people will think “more is better” and cause more harm than good by rolling too often.

      Hi Abishek, welcome to the channel and thank you for your questions.
      You can dermaroll with long hair. The recommendation is to wet your hair first to reduce hair tugging, then part the hair is the areas you plan to dermaroll. Dermaroll the exposed scalp and then part the hair in a different area and repeat. It takes longer than short hair, of course. But the principles are the same.
      It recommended you wash your hair first to remove any harmful substances from your skin. But if you’re only using a 0.5mm, you could dermaroll without washing. I wouldn’t do that myself. But it is possible.

      That’s an interest point of view. Unfortunately you are quite wrong and if you have been following my channel for more than a day, you’d know how hard I work to research what I’m taking about.
      Putting your personal attack aside for the moment, the internet is free information. Where did the forum members get “all of their hard work” from? If we suppose your rationale applies equally to everyone, would that mean to say that everyone is wrong for being a secondary source? Should only researchers be able to discuss their findings?
      Feel free to peruse my google drive folder that contains all of the studies I used and dig up myself at my university.
      And the person you’re commenting on now knows this to be true since she and I attended graduate school together, where we conduct our own research as secondary sources from primary researchers.

    Keep up the good work! Your videos are informative and you come across as a solid dude. I've only recently started to apply Rogaine 5% foam on my scalp, it's been a week. Unfortunately i take a high blood pressure medication daily and i find that in conjunction with Rogaine 2x a day i get extremely dizzy. The past two days i have only applied Rogaine once a day and the symptoms are marginally better. I ordered a 0.5mm Derma Roller today and i'm extremely excited. I am not getting my hopes up but its better than nothing. If... and it's a major IF.. i get some decent results in 6-9 months time with the Derma Roller and once a day Rogaine. Do you think applying Rogaine once every other day would be sufficient to maintain?? I know that if you stop Rogaine altogether one will lose all gains by 1-2 months. However.. if one has gotten a "satisfactory" result from Derma + Rogaine. Do you think applying Rogaine once every other day should be enough to maintain? I've googled the efficacy of Rogaine but sadly there really isn't a lot of literature out there.

    Thank you for this video, super useful and easy to understand :) I have been using dermaroller for three weeks now, I use the 0.5ml one but I use it 2-3 times/week, good to know that I can use it only once. I also use minoxidil 5% but I use it twice/day even on the day I use dermaroller, but I am going to skip it on the day I use dermaroller from now on. I stopped using finasteride as I unfortunately started to experience side effects. I really hope to get good results as I started using derma roller after I kinda was not getting any good results with my regimen (btw I undergo PRP plasma session once/month) for 7 months now, will the minoxidil twice/day, the shedding has stopped and I feel my hair is just a bit thicker but I don't notice any new hair regrowth (I occasionally notice couple of tiny hairs when I take a close-up pic of my hair) but that's it. I also take biotin+zinc+selenium supplement and use Alpecin caffeine shampoo daily. I hope using the dermaroller is going to boost the results to a satisfactory level as I don't feel I am satisfied with I am getting so far. Appreciate if you have any comments to help in my case and thanks again for this video.

I know I'm only 7 weeks in but have gone past the shedding stage and seen lots of vellus hairs come threw and the shedding has stopped. also would like to know is it safe to apply the minoxidil right after derma rolling. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @keratinbrotherhood

      Skills, thank you for your question. Dermarolling should not cause shedding. Minoxidil however, does cause shedding in waves. These waves are unavoidable and some are worse than others. But it sounds like you're in-between sheds, which is a good place to be.
      As for applying minox, please wait 24 hours after dermarolling before applying minox. Applying it immediately following a session increases the risk of side effects.

      Max the study by Singh & Yadav (2016) suggests spreading sessions with 1.5mm our by one month. 0.5mm should be spread by at least 5 days. So I suppose bimonthly is safe for a 1mm.

      Shahzad, for sure you can add derma rolling by itself. It's a great thing to add to any man's daily hair care regimen I believe. You might see some good results after a couple of months.
      I would like to add that all three things: minox, fin, and dermarolling work in different ways and each is augmented by the others. So using any of them in isolation will likely yield lesser results. At least adding minoxidil is recommended.

    What do you recommend? A 0.5mm or 1.5mm derma roller. I hear people mentioning both these sizes a lot for regrowth. What is the recommended size for the most effective results?

    • @keratinbrotherhood
      @keratinbrotherhood  5 років тому

      TheArtofWar, good question. The recommended size for in-home use is 0.5mm to 1.5mm, like you mentioned. The dermarolling interval is the most important element, not the size. 0.5mm is okay to use at once every 5 days. I use it once every 7 days because I use Minoxidil on my scalp and I trade an application of min for dermarolling. 1mm and 1.5mm require longer periods of time between sessions; too frequent and there is increased risk of scarring.
      I’ve gotten great results from 0.5mm, so I see little reason to go with a higher gauge.
      Try it out for yourself and see why you can get at 0.5 or 1mm (twice a month is the interval) before using a 1.5mm. Bigger isn’t always better with diminishing returns.

      razzak md.noh the half-life of topical minoxidil is about 22 hours; so if you only applied once a day, it’s quite possible to maintain the growth. The only way to know for sure is to see how your body responds. If you start noticing significant shedding after switching to once a day, reconsider applying only once a day.

    Im experimenting with derma rolling with .25 every other day(so 2 day recovery time), I do 5 left/right diagonal, horizontal, vertical; I finished the fourth session to be honest only the first time I've noticed a lot of red but after that it hasn't even been like a 2.5 out of 10 in redness compared to the first time(mind you the first time was barely red it didn't even bleed).
    I use tea tree oil and some biotin/collagen oils; my hair loss some would say it blessed its been 2 years since I've been balding, I've been shaving aggressively to see if anymore of my follicles are weak and not that I can see. My crown is full the my back of the head is full except my widow's Peake is receeding - I haven't noticed anymore balding it's just like your crown it's 60% dense than normal and haven't noticed any loss in 2 years mind u I shave bald agressively.
    If I get transplant I estimate 100-200 hairs more on the hundred side I'm not a pro so idk. I would get a surgery but why should I spend 3000 dollars on 100-200 hairs I can't find a cheap place.
    That's just to give you perspective on my hair loss, so how do you think the way I dermaroll would effect my hair?

      For more context the balding was probably due to monoxidil I used on my face at 18 to grow a beard(stupid I was the test dummy and I say no one should do it) and it accelerated the growth of my beard( it's decent) but it also accelerated the cycle of my hair so I'm 20 with a 30 year olds hairline pretty much

      ROP, thank you for leaving such a detailed comment and question. I always appreciate it when people take the time to write out their questions.
      Without photos, it sounds to me like you are dealing with diffuse thinning. In that case, dermarolling could help.
      I cannot recall the name of the study I read, but there was a study that said to spur collagen production in your scalp (and consequently lead to hair growth), at least a 0.5mm needle is required to induce enough skin trauma. A 0.25mm is generally used for daily use to help skin care products to penetrate the skin. This would also explain why you haven’t noticed much redness.
      Have you considered upping the needle length?

      @@keratinbrotherhood I thought the fda didn't approve of needles the size above .30 for non medical use

    hi, can i ask something stupid that I havent understand yet.
    I am not going to have or had a hair transplant ever. Can i use only derma roller to see some results? without anything else, products, minoxydil or creams.
    Is it possible? My hair just starting thining to the front of my head. Do you think is this going to help at all only derma roller ? Thanks

      Fk sorry for the late reply! Yes you can absolutely see results with only a dermaroller. The mechanism by which it works is the body’s own healing process. It will happen with or without creams/minoxidil/or whatever else. Of corpse, using other stuff concurrently will boost the effectiveness, but you most definitely can see result with dermarolling alone.
      Thanks for your question!

    Hi DJ,
    What is your thoughts about using topical finasteride and regaine is that too much stuff on the scalp? Also what are your feelings about Hims.com

    • @keratinbrotherhood
      @keratinbrotherhood  5 років тому +1

      Hi Naruto, I don’t know enough about topical finasteride to make a judgement about it. I’ve only heard about it and I have no firsthand experience. As for being too much on your scalp, it depends on your tolerance. If you don’t get any irritation or other negative sides, then go for it. If you’re still unsure, I’d suggest asking a dermatologist for more information.
      I’ve never used Him’s because I live in South Korea; but they are legit. Their prices are a little higher for fin than baldness.doctor and their minoxidil prices are higher than you could find yourself on amazon. But from a convenience perspective, they are good. I’d stick to just fin and min though. The other stuff is not worth the money imo.

      With regards to using the derma roller, how much force would you say to use? I know your video says it doesn’t have to cause bleeding. I just started using it this week and was not really in any real discomfort. I was pushing down firmly.
      Thank you for all the great tips. Your channel is awesome

    Can I apply oil on my head after using the dermaroller or before it? And do I wet my hair before using it or just keep my scalp dry? I apologize I just discovered this today and still kinda unsure and confused a bit about it.

    DJ, I have a 0.25mm derma roller, I have been using it every other day, or every 24hrs. Would I see any progress if I continue with this routine? Should I go for a 0.5mm? And do it every Friday like you suggested? Thank you!!

    Thank you for your video. You know what I was doing? I was rolling and putting minoxidil 5% right after. Or I was applying then rolling. Second I rolled everyday and applied garlic right after sometimes. I WAS LOSING IT, it was giving me headaches . But then I saw a video that proved me i was nutts. Dangerous but worked amazingly but short after my hair started to fall again, now I take into consideration these times of videos. Thanks

    Also, I know us guys hate hearing this but you'd look great with your head shaved. Got sharp jaw lines and can grow facial hair, something I don't have and can't do 😂.
