I loved the video footage too I have to get one. And the production style you use is cool too. Love the way you shoot through the parts of the boat to give some depth in the fire ground and the way you narrate the episode from in front of the camera instead of on a microphone. I absolutely LOVE Mazatlan. Some of the best deep sea fishing in the world. You can gather up rock lobsters by hand off the rocks. Cliff diving is more laid back than in Acapulco and fun to watch. The little taxi carts are called combis. I am not sure if I spelled that right. Mazatlan is definitely worth spending time in!

Just found you guys, great channel! We keep our Cal 34 in Mazatlan and have not been there since June so seeing this really is pushing me to get back down. Like you, when we first got to Mazatlan we really liked it, the people and it's history. It's a great launching point for us. Thanks for sharing!
Ahh .... that feels so much better! Thanks for getting the video up. I have to say my favorite part was the pool, that was so amazing. You had a great excuse for acting like kids at summer camp.
Once off Panama we were motoring towards the San Blas Islands when the hot cable to the starter shorted out on a motor mount. A small fire burned out the air filter and the engine sucked in the particulates. It still ran but the skipper decided to proceeded on to Jamaica under sail. Two days out the quadrant on the rudder post broke but we had a spare, only the holes for the cables were too small. Fortunately I had thought to bring a cordless drill just in case. The boat was so well balanced that she sailed perfectly even with a broken quadrant, therefore it was relatively easy to fix under way. The boat was a 46' version of a Petersen 44.
I love that you guys have a hard dink and row. I cruised in the nineties on a HC38 with a 10' hard dinghy and good oars. When I go out again it will be with a longer dinghy on board that rows even better. I had a friend on a Passport 42 with a two piece nesting dinghy that assembled was 14' but nested on deck took up ~8'. Coupled with a small motor for those lazy days I think it is the safest "car" to have in your "garage".

Nice one guys. We liked hearing your different perspectives on night passages as well as motor vs. sailing. It's a huge priority for me to get more comfortable using the sails more often and in more situations in case we 'need to' someday. I like the comment about the false sense of security. Nice to see so many compliments already on your production quality, eh?!
Can tell you from personal experience that Jon is absolutely correct. We were finishing the Columbus Day Regatta in Miami and the channel is very narrow and crowded with spectator, party and other racing yachts. Our engine decided to protest and wouldn't turn over at all. We started to panic but what can you do, you deal with it. so we sailed thru all that while the captain tended to the engine. Never felt so competent as we did after that maneuvering under sail. Since then we often drop anchor, pick up anchor and flat out sail under conditions we would have used the engines, just to keep our skills and confidence intact. But I digress.
Awesome story Tonya! Wow, that's so cool. We did have to sail into our marina here in Emeryville a while back due to a coolant hose problem. But I will say the wind was very cooperative that evening. We definitely need to get a lot more practice!
Just catching up on all of your episodes, to make her more cofortable with "just leaving the sails up" you guys should compete is some regatas on small bodies of water or small courses in close quarters with othe boats, under sail only. Scary at first but gives you a sense of real closeness to danger. I learned on lakes with all kinds of boat traffic, sails didnt come down til coming into the marina on my first solo sail.

Very happy you are posting videos again. Q: When was the Kiwi feathering prop added? Thoughts on feathering vs standard prop for low budget, long range cruising? Details at some point? I have been looking at HC-33s for a couple of years and have been back n forth comparing them to the 38s, 43s, and 41s before buying one for retirement.
+Dave Walker thanks for the compliments! We started using the kiwi prop in 2014. For us, we sail as much as possible and it does make a difference when the winds are light. We lost about a knot in motoring speed vs our fixed but with our old gear ratio we could use only the 17" . With our new engine and it higher gear ratio we could use the 18" now which I think would be better match and probably see better performance. We have since moved to an autoprop which has the complete opposite effect, we gained performance, especially at lower rpm. The autoprop is much more expensive and is much larger at 18.75". For being on a budget, I would recommend keeping it simple. We switched back to our fixed blade in Costa Rica from the kiwi due to the large amounts of wood in the water and because there was so little wind, and I can say for sure, where we could ghost along at 1-2knts in under 5 knots of wind before, we would be at a stand still with the fixed prop.

Long time no see ! I saw you on sv sundowner in the San Blas islands on their vlog ,but that was about 9 months ago just before they stopped vloging and put their boat up for sale . I don't know why or what happened . You all shared Thanksgiving dinner together . That is when you posted a video of your return to Mexico for your second season ! You all must be having so much fun that you don't have time to edit and post ! You must have an entire year in the can ready to post right ? I don't do insta gram or Facebook .....tried it and didn't like it ! I don't like going to websites either . I just click the UA-cam button and all the latest videos I subscribe to line up the thumb nail click bait description and I watch for hours at a time all my favorites !👍 thanks for sharing 😎
First what settings are your night shots? They are the best I've seen. Props on the quality of your stuff. I feel like I can appreciate the detail of your voyages. Other UA-cam/vloggers are all just copies of each other now but your stuff is what it's all about. Great work.
Hi guys. Love your videos, safe to say I'm a little hooked. I'm curious about the yacht. It seems to be a heavy boat for a smaller boat. Is this going to be safe to travel around the globe , why didn't you go for a more modern boat that will be a bit lighter. I'm new to sailing so excuse the my naivety. Don't get me wrong I love the yacht but what's the safety aspects of having the HC33 instead of a newer boat? My next question is if you lift the hook and raise the sails how long will it take to get to 5 knots without starting the motor?
