  • As Brexit negotiations finally reach their end game, he will reflect on the history of our relationship with Europe from his unique perspective, having been at the heart of European affairs for much of his distinguished career.
Stephen, a Selwyn alumnus and an honorary fellow of the college, was a member of the British diplomatic service for 35 years. He was the UK’s permanent representative to the EU, and a key advisor to prime ministers John Major and Tony Blair.
He has written widely on Britain and the EU. His most recent book, Reluctant European: Britain and the European Union from 1945 to Brexit was praised in the Observer for its “authority, expertise and a gift for lucid explanations of complex issues and convoluted negotiations.”

Such phenomenal insight. I was quite struck by the comments towards the end regarding the need for a constitutional discussion; that seems quite prescient given that Labour recently had a vote on adopting electoral reform as party policy in the wake of wider campaigning for PR and alsothe Welsh First minister just publicly calling for abolition of First Past the Post at Westminster.
I would love to hear Sir Stephen's thoughts on where the UK's heading with CPTPP post-Brexit.
