Can we just take a minute silence for those two backing dancers literally dancing their hearts out like it’s the last time they are ever going to dance again
Fun fact: the dancer in the pink dress is Miranda Cooper, founder of Xenomania (along with Brian Higgins) responsible for all of Girl's Aloud singles as well as hits for Sugababes, Kylie, Pet Shop Boys and The Saturdays.
They were absolutely on point! As were the backing vocalists - excellent harmonies! I don't recall what song won in 1996 but this should definitely have been the winner or certainly in the top 3!
The keyboard choice is also very weird... Yamaha VL1 - Virtual acoustic. You can't even play more than two notes at a time on that. Must have been picked for its appearance.
How in the bloody hell did this song and performance did not win the contest?8th place!!!Wtf!!!That's one of the best songs and performance ever on the ESC!At least as far as I can remember!
I agree, best song, but not Gina's best performance of it. She is flat in places. I think the Eurovision judges do mark down unfairly for that, especially given the vigorous nature of the choreography. Even Tina Turner in her prime might have been a little breathless at the end of this one.
One of the biggest hits from eurovision since the 90's. In fact it was the last song to chart on the USA airplay charts till Arcade made the chart just this year
The dancers were mesmerising - great performance from Gina. Backing vocalists on point and computer guy doing a good job pretending to press buttons! - Hope all are doing well
Juries and eurovision was very conservative back in those days. Tbh Ireland was amazing but this deserved top3 placing, next year Iceland went far more "outside of the esc box" 🤘
The problem is her vocals. She's flat and off tune here. The SONG is great, but this was the last jury-only year. They didn't give a shit about dancing.
Yes youre right - according to 'ESC Stuff' "The jury decisions in the 1996 Contest were greeted with dismay amongst the live audience, and many began to leave the arena once the count had become a foregone conclusion. As a result of the differences between public and jury opinion, partial televoting was introduced for the following year's contest." Whereas despite its lowly #8 ESC placing, across the global charts "Ohh Ahh" trounced "The Voice" which only made #3 at home in Ireland and only became a hit elsewhere in Belgium #9, the Netherlands #21, Sweden #31 and the UK #40. Gina scored #1 in both the UK & Israel and sold 800,000 in the UK making it the 6th bestselling single of '96. It made the Top 10 in most European countries including Denmark, Hungary, Norway, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland and Sweden. Down under in her native Australia, it got to #5 and #28 in New Zealand where its the 17th biggest ESC hit ever. But most amazing of all was the record's massive success in the USA where only a mere 12 original ESC songs have ever been hits! "Ooh Ahh" ranks the 4th most successful chartwise there peaking at #12, and spending 30 weeks in the Hot 100. And on top of that it even got nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Making it "without a doubt one of the most popular non-winning Eurovision entries of all time." So YES more than enough proof to say - we woz robbed (again!) [most the above info culled from aussievision.net & Wiki]
Eurovision(without televoting) was not ready for this...Gina came 7th that year. This song and Sam Ryders "spaceman' are the best Uk eurovision songs of the last 30 years !
@jonnyrandom211 The one in yellow is called Chloé Treend and together with the one in pink, Miranda Cooper, they formed a musical duo called T-Shirt covering the Hot Chocolat song "You sexy thing".
I love the CRT monitors. Hilarious. They aren't even plugged in, so you know that's a design choice they probably thought it looked super futuristic. 😂
I believe it was the rules at the time. 'all instruments had to appear on stage'. The Apple computers were effectively the main instrument in the song so had to appear in the performance.

I don't think Gina, who I like very much, did this great song justice on the night. It's fast paced and no doubt very challenging to perform under the circumstances, but it was a disapponting performance. The song that should've won was Sweden's 'Den Vilda', and I say that as an Englishman. One More Time are a very underrated band.
How on earth can you say that? She really did a fantastic job. Really vibrant, happy, bouncy and extremely catchy. It most certainly should have won. And I'm not English. I'm Irish. Of course Gina looked - and always looked - a million dollars.

To be fair the UK went on to win in 1997, and came second in 1998. I think 1996 was just a case of Jury votes badly predicting the popular vote.
