SYNOPSIS:
Two brothers and one fallen angel - against all the might of Satan and his army! As the Apocalypse grows closer, threatening to turn Earth into a battlefield soaked with human blood, Sam, Dean and Castiel struggle against daunting odds. New foes arise, including the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Old friends depart, consumed by the fearsome wrath of Hell. I definitely think Cas looked to Dean, and learned from him over time.
But I also think you're spot on in that Cas is in deep, deep despair. He rebelled against Heaven and his angelic siblings, tried to find God, allied himself strongly to Dean ... Now all the angels turned their backs on the world, there is absolutely no going back. God proved he wouldn't intervene to save humanity. And Dean, Dean changed from the person who helped inspire Cas to rebel. Cas rebelled when they made Dean torture Alistair, when he could not keep justifying what they were made to do as "God's will".
I think Dean "going dark" was the final straw for Cas, what really broke him and made him drown himself in whatever sensations and brief connections he could find.

The bullet holes in Bobby's wheelchair made me sad. I like 2014 Cass. Too funny! But Cass original is the best! Dean can be hard & cold but Dean 2014 is even colder & harder after being without Sam for 5 years. I thought it was interesting that we saw Chuck at the camp. Didn't seem like much of a survivalist to me. One of my favorite episodes all the whole series. Great commentary!
