Black-bellied Whistling Ducks: Studying the largest, northern-most population EVER documented

- Black-bellied whistling ducks, relegated to habitats of the U.S. Gulf Coast, Mexico, and other tropical locations only 15 years ago, are now one of the most exciting stories among the waterfowl management community as they continue to expand their range and increase in abundance across the central and eastern U.S. This unique situation is providing scientists and students an exciting opportunity to learn about one example of how wild animals can successfully adapt to an increasingly human-influenced landscape. Dr. Jerad Henson and undergraduate students at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee, are studying the breeding ecology and physiology of the largest, northern-most population of black-bellied whistling ducks thus far documented. DU recently went afield with Dr. Henson and his students to observe and learn first-hand about their research.

While Turkey hunting today 4/30/24, a flock of 8 landed in a shallow water hole in the middle of a field near Saltillo MS. Watched them thru binoculars for 10 minutes before they took flight. Absolutely no doubt that’s what they were. Cool to see
SE Michigan last year.. in the north bay marsh I believe there was one seen. Pretty cool watching this play out.
We have them in Wisconsin right now
Yes. Now that I watch this video I saw one on the Oconto River walleye fishing
Just found these guys with merlin. Great to know who the new neighbors are.👍
FB page Nebraska through the lens had some footage of a group of whistling ducks in the southern area probably in the middle of the state.
Many people were surprised about this encounter. I hope that this move will be useful for this species and will not harm any other duck population
Someone I watch on here saw some in east northern Iowa which is real far up there
Congratulations guys!!! Great job!!!
Beautiful!
They're expanding everywhere! Go to Lake Millwood in southwest Arkansas.
I kid you not I had one In my pond in MN today. Didn't know what it was till saw this video.
I live in south Florida and saw some!
So about 5 or 6 month ago, I had a couple pair of whistling ducks show up in my backyard, under my feeders. So I started throwing out some cracked corn for them before you know it I had 68 and then they all disappeared.about a month and a half ago, a pair showed up with there ducklings. It was exciting and then we had a big rain storm, and I didn’t see them for a couple days. When they did come back, they only had four. It’s been fun watching them grow, up they come to my feeder every morning and late evening with there four little ducklings. and I am enjoying it so very very much.
Superb👍
I just had 40 land in my back yard today. Never seen or heard of them before. I’m near Florence South Carolina. None had bands on.
I live in the Houston area and these things are everywhere in my neighborhood
Seen a group of 5 on a pond in December in NW Arkansas last year. Couldn’t believe my eyes! Never thought I’d see them 500 miles from the coast.
I always thought they had a cute and funny name. 😁❤️
We have had hundreds here in my community on the northeast coast of North Carolina the last four summers. None of them successfully hatched or raised. I’ve been studying them and have only seen one successful hatch of four young and they didn’t last but one and a half weeks before they were all eaten by predators.
I have some friends seeing them in Swansboro as well.
Saw them in Hanover Virginia.
Just had some in with our Geese and Ducks. We are in Harper, Kansas! Wow they are neat! Wonder why they are moving north?
I had 3 whistling ducks on our lake in central Missouri, about 5 years ago.
I have this exact nesting box. I put it on a pole in my yard near the river. Even though I have mated pairs of whistling ducks with young, they've never used it. I'm assuming I need to locate it out into the water? I have three more to put up. Any tips would be appreciated!
We had a group of four on Long Island, NY this past summer. Dont know if they actually bred here or not but they stayed in the area for awhile
Hundreds in my pond...I never even heard of them ..
Had a flock in Maryland this Spring.
We have a breeding population in Southern IL as well.
I came to this video to learn about them, as I saw a wierd looking duck near me in southern Virginia. I looked up its characteristics and it was a black bellied whistling duck. But it said it was native to south america, florida, and texas. I wasnt sure if it was invasive or not, and couldnt find any evidence of a population their.
Black bellied whistling ducks duck house
They have three broods a year, do the math.
