    Thank you, kind sir! This is very helpful as I attempt to swap out the gears from my damaged lower unit to a new-to-me (used) unit. Your delivery is very calm and peaceful, with echos of Bob Ross (I mean that as a compliment). :)

      Also, you can use a standard puller with some 1/2" concrete anchor bolts. I am doing one now. You need at least a 12 inch concrete anchor to do it. No need to buy the Mercury tools which is stupid expensive. I think I have a video on this but I can't remember. Because I CRS disease.

    I have a 1978 M-800 80 Hp Mercury 2 stroke outboard. I've been told the retaining nut removal tool # 91-61069 will not fit my model. Do you know which tool# would fit? Thanks

    • @DIYwithMichaelBorders
      @DIYwithMichaelBorders  Рік тому

      Good morning, we are drinking our morning coffee answering any and all questions for the DIY community. Let’s get this figured out. We will need the exact serial # of the outboard. This can be found on the outboard...usually on a placard or sticker. We can then verify it to the tool to ensure it’s the correct retainer nut wrench.

      @@DIYwithMichaelBorders Serial # 5006552. The manual I have for the motor calls for tool# C-91-73688 but I cannot not find that online for a reasonable price and not in stock most places. Alternatively tool # 91-61069 says 4-3/8" nut removal but I don't know if that is the correct tool. Thank you for reply

      I ordered the part/tool for the retainer nut to remove it and it was not the right one and did not fit. I ended up drilling out the retainer nut. I now have a cracked lower unit as somehow during the process I hammered to hard or something. The tool part # listed in the manual isn't available anywhere that I looked or that I could find. c-91-53126. I will look for a used lower unit and hope to find one that matches.
