  • Abbie Hoffman was an American activist and revolutionary political organizer in the civil rights and anti-war movements who co-founded the Youth International Party (“Yippies”). He was arrested and tried for his role in protests that were confronted violently by police during the 1968 Democratic National Convention and began to write Steal This Book in jail while awaiting what became known as the Trial of the Chicago Seven. Hoffman continued his activism through the 1980's and remains an icon of countercultural movements today.

I just happened to be on Chandler St in Worcester, MA on the day of Hoffman’s funeral service, at the temple down the street from his childhood home. Pete Seeger lead a procession down the street playing his banjo and singing songs.

That’s neat that you witnessed that moment in time. Hoffman spoke at my university a couple of years before his death. It was the Reagan years & the anti war protesters who became a part of US pop culture hadn’t yet found ways to make a living based upon their former lives. Hoffman was so big though that he was in demand.
The conservative backlash of the 1980s apparently bothered him. Can you imagine what he’d think of the left today? It’s like Reagan kids are protesting but don’t understand the issues & haven’t heard of a war they don’t like. I miss the world where the left was pro working class & anti war & the right was predictable in representing management issues. Lol 😂 Thanks for sharing your story about Hoffman’s funeral.

Oh, you are taking me back with this episode! I remember when the money cascade at the Stock Exchange happened. Candice Bergen was also there. I could never get behind giving LSD to anyone without the person's knowledge, even if that person was Tricia Nixon. When Abbie either went to prison or simply abandoned them, Anita Hoffman and their son, America were left destitute. I have often wondered what happened to them and if America is still living. I know Anita died young of breast cancer. One of Abbie Hoffman's wives was Johanna Lawrenson, daughter of Jack and Helen Lawrenson. Her father was a founder of the Longshoreman's Union and her mother was a writer and managing editor of Vanity Fair in the 1930's. Helen wrote a wonderful memoir, "Stranger at the Party." The story of Abbie Hoffman is ultimately a sad one. I heard Abbie Hoffman speak at UCLA in 1968.

Abbie spoke at my college about 1985. Most enthralling speaker that I ever saw. Never sold out. An activist to his last day. I'd love to see Robert Barnes do a hush hush on him.

  • @julianciahaconsulting8663
    @julianciahaconsulting8663 Рік тому +6

Saw Abbie Hoffmann in the mid 1980s during the Yippie vs Yuppie Debate tour at the University of Calgary , Canada. This being at the height of the neo-con 80s where wealth was worshipped , sixties scoffed at, Brooke Shields the professional virgin was the role model for university girls, and the War on Drugs raged. Times all that by ten in Calgary. When the debate began the argyle sweater rugby pants wearing audience automatically aligned with Rubin just on aesthetics alone . But Hoffmann by his wit and humour little by little warmed up the crowd even getting the odd laugh from the MBA crowd. By the end of the debate Hoffmann had dug himself out of that deep hole he was in at the start of the debate and had at least half the audience supporting him. In Calgary in the mid 1980s getting half of that straight campus crowd behind you was a very impressive achievement trust me.

Abbie Hoffman has just shot so far up my list of the coolest/most bad ass persons ever list!! Being a person who has been involved in and interested in punk rock and all of the aspects, besides the music(the DIY ethic, leftist politics, etc.)surrounding punk rock and it's history, I am now fully convinced that Abbie Hoffman, even though he was part of the hippie/yippie movement, was PUNK AS F**K. He was punker than 99% of people who would later fly under the "punk rock" banner. Abbie relentlessly called out the police, the government, the man, etc., along with their lies, deception, hypocrisy, etc. And he did it in an outrageous and comedic manner, which was what punk rock was originally all about. The punk rock that came out in the '77-'80ish era was full of outrageousness and sarcastic humor. And it had a no rules, be yourself, do whatever you're into just as long as you're upsetting the norm and calling out the status quo, feel and vibe. Unfortunately, punk rock soon evolved into bands and so called punk rockers who developed a kind of "I'm taking myself WAAAY too seriously" schtick, a holier than thou attitude that was filled with kinds of judgemental bs and rules. The hardcore and punk rock that came along later in the 80s, filled with all of it's rules and costumes and overly serious pretentiousness became a joke upon itself. It was not what punk rock is was really about....at all. In fact, most of it was in total opposition of what punk was really about. Not to mention, without bands like the MC5 and the Stooges there would be no punk rock. Great podcast, though. You guys are killin' it!!

Thanks a lot for this story of an American original freedom fighter. Unconventional certainly applies to Abbie Hoffman, but also genius, character, determination, guts, truther, probably held a few conspiracy theories as real...hats off to the man that was. We could use a few more similar activists/ stir-the-pot of culture types.. May he rest in peace.

Kerouac from Lowell MA, not Worcester.
Ken Kesey worked & tripped at Menlo Park CA Veterans Hospital near my high school. He wrote " One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" about
    the experience.
The Merry Pranksters started in Menlo Park. The Grateful Dead & the first Deadheads started in & around my high school. Add LSD.
Google Garage 2 blocks from high school. First internet connection
across from high school. Siri, the mouse & computer banking.
The Phone Phreaking craze was down the road in San Jose & Cupertino.
I saw a lot of diff musicals put on by the S.F. Mime Troupe. They stopped
doing Mime, soon after they started. Bill Graham of Fillmore fame was the manager. The S.F. Diggers part of same scene.
Danny Glover was a student activist at S.F. State.
I think the Acid Tests by the Pranksters & Dead were the forerunners of lots that came later. The Whole Earth Truck Store & Catalog also in Menlo Park & part of the Pranksters.
The Bay Area Civil Right demonstrations & the Free Speech Movement
in Berkeley sort of mixed into the AntiWar movement.
Bobby Seale & Charles Garry, Bay Area duo.
    Looking forward to Paul Krassner.

    @Eric Hunley
My wife's boss found Abbie dead. He knew him during his last days. She came home from work and told me that Abbie had ODed. This man (Bob Robinson) who knew Abbie would tell us that Abbie would sit in his yard drinking and tell them all about his (Abbie's) life and then Bob would tell us. These were the the days of Grunge and looking forward to the new millennia. I was a young man back then and knew of Hoffman and his exploits. He was a hero to people like me. Not so much the Right Wing as he hated them.
I'm surprised you took a look at Abbie's life. I'm impressed. Well done Mr. Hunley. I must say this was your best show ever. And that is coming from your worst critic ever. I tried to share on Twitter but they shot me down. I hate Twitter. But I shared on Facebook.
Ok, back to your insane hatred of the truth.

A bit later on in life here, close to Fineview NY ( the hangout). But I caught your drift regarding the co host. You can see the disgust expression on his face the first 1/4 of the show as if to say “ this man was a hippie liberal commie future anti trump punk”
Thankfully mark, being as great as he is snd as funny, kept it going non stop. It appears around halfway through Eric lighted up a bit then enjoyed marks recollections like we all were. The pentagon story is hysterical, I do vaguely remember that. Most of his bravest antics occurred when I was young but I DO remembered my folks talking about their summer friends telling them they were acquaintances of Barry Freed ( Abbie) my parents were sworn to secrecy as he was still on the run secretly up here on the st Lawrence.
He was instrumental in the development of what’s called “ save the river” an environmental group which has grown substantially and has made a huge difference lobbying the two overseeing agencies to maintain proper flow levels, stricter pollution protection laws etc as the river flows by Montreal on its way out to the Atlantic.
The Barbara Walters interview while he was still hiding out was 20 minutes away from my place.
What an amazing, influential, FUNNY, brave soul !

Totally fascinating stories here. I 'just' missed being a part of all of this. Living at Minnewaska in New Paltz (illegally, in one of the hundreds of unused rooms, as an employee there in Nov. '75.) We had no heat so, left and hitchhiked to Florida that month to escape the cold. Have read both 'Steal this Book' and 'Steal this Drug Test'. (May have one or both in a box somewhere). I thought I read somewhere many moons ago, that his son had claimed it was a massive overdose of Lithium (enough to kill an elephant) and his son allegedly said "my Dad didn't kill himself. If he'd have killed himself, he would have rapped himself in the American flag and jumped off the ITT building." That was many years, and joints, ago; so I could be mixing up stories at this point. Mark, this is a fantastic retelling of so much important history. Can't wait to find the time to go thru you guys other videos.

The "free phone" also causes the name of the "phone phreaks" journal - "2600" This was the tone frequency which the old plain old telephone system (POTS) would enter into ENGINEER mode, and could be used to do all sorts of interesting things to the phone. This included free long distance, and output of various useful information about the system.

TheWHO actually knew the MC5 well. so Townshend probably had a rough idea what was happening 'cause he probably knew Sinclair. they'd had band competitions in Detroit. also, Townshend has subsequently said he agreed w/ what Hoffman's message turned out to be. (WHO fan here, as well as theMC5). but because in the middle of a rock 'opera' nobody is gonna be the first person to grab a mic during a Woodstock set. and Abbie was. later, it became clear to PT. and according to Country Joe, who you also probably know, Mark, PT sort of tapped Abbie's head w/ the headstock, sort of shoving him. and PT says the short guitar strings probably punctured his skin. Townshend at BETHEL '98 does a whole bit on it. in closing, he was badgered by the promoters to sign for Woodstock, back in May '69, got there in a station wagon stuck in mud amongst rumors the promoters were out of money. TheWHO was out of money, also. the LSD, the mud, the waiting, the rain, and his wife & daughter made Woodstock difficult for Pete. BTW, the reason it's not on film is that they were changing reels after 'pinball Wizard', when a stranger grabs his mic and starts a speech.

Shortly before he committed suicide, can you imagine how Abbie felt? The rock music that we (ludicrously) thought was going to change the world had become just another corporate product. Young people were caught up in the nationalism and greed of the disastrous Reagan era which, according to the BBC, presided over the largest transfer of wealth in American history- from the middle ad working classes to the rich. His fellow travelers in the Movement had mostly become buttoned down corporate shills, one (Renee Davis) became a shill for a 14 year old guru! The parts of the Counter Culture that could be converted to dollars were absorbed into the culture at large.
We miss you Abbie. And it wasn't all in vain. Racism is no longer acceptable, acceptance of gays, skepticism of the governments, legalized weed and acceptance of other drugs, all these grew out of or were helped along by the movement. Yippie!

in 'the USA vs. John Lennon', his song for Sinclair really was big time for reefer laws gone crazy, and got John Sinclair freed. I was in Jr. High when the "Hoffman" trial was going on, before I even knew who wrote 'Pinball Wizard,' so your point is well taken, Mark. TheWHO were insane, but I became a big fan.

That levitation of the Pentagon involved Kenneth Anger, or so he says. Or at least he put a curse on the building at the time. He also says that while he was there, Bobby Beausoleil stole all the tapes from Lucifer Rising that were at the Russian Embassy in the vicinity of the Haight and took off for the Spiral Staircase down south, where Bobby met Charlie.

The first phone phreaks were blind kids that had perfect pitch and they would whistle the tones into the phone. The captain crunch boatswain whistle was the right Hertz to get a open line. John Draper aka Captain Crunch the software engineer met the blind kids because he had a pirate radio station and asked for people to call in and tell them about the quality of the signal. He at first would play the correct tones on a Hammond organ then started building the Blue boxes. Wozniak knew him from the Homebrew computer club and told him how to make one. Draper also wrote a lot of software for Apple including their first word processor. And yes they did work on any phone line. Fun fact Ike Turner was busted in 74 because the genius was using blue boxes at his recording studio Bolic sound. Which is why the Phreaks used them on payphones

There were networks of anonymous snail-mail remailers in the 1960s and 1970s, I read about one in 2600 Magazine that was still operating 20 years ago or so. You put your letter in successive envelopes with the address of the next remailer on the inner envelope. When the remailer got it, they opened and then brought it to a mail box and sent it to the next one.

Here's an idea for an episode, how about the Weather Underground?? My apologies if you have already done one. I mentioned a possible episode on Smedley Butler and someone pointed out you already have one, but if I'm not mistaken that episode was about the Bonus Army and not about Gen Butler specifically. Old Gimlet Eye was surely one of a kind, even I don't agree with everything he stood for. The man told the truth, as he saw it, like very few have ever done.
