Angel Reece also claims to be drawing eyes to the WNBA, as well as Caitlin Clark. If she truly believed that, she wouldn't reference Caitlin Clark's name in every interview to leverage attention from her. Without stat-padding fake stats, Angel is barely above average as a player.

The simple fact that shoots down Angel Reece's false claims to be a significant factor in bringing eyes to the WNBA is to compare crowd attendance and TV viewership for Chicago Sky games vs Indiana Fever compared to against ALL other franchises. The only time the Sky got significant numbers in both and even had to change venues to accommodate the extra fans is when the Sky played the Fever, and even then more than half of the fans were wearing CC 22 Fever jerseys! *_Drop Mic_* 🎤

Caitlin is from a small state which hasn't had a national championship in basketball. So when she broke onto the scene with a completely different style from all other women's players, she elevated Iowa basketball to new levels. She has a fantastic personality, very charismatic and always makes time to speak with fans and sign autographs. The Iowa fans, families and sports pundits were drawn to her like bees to honey. Soon it became must see TV wherever she played and it continues today. JuJu is a fantastic player too, but she plays a more traditional style. She also doesn't attract families or young girls to the game and she will never put butts in seats like Caitlin. Caitlin is a transcendent player and WNBA leadership are idiots for trying to force new fans to watch their tired 'old' stars instead of embracing the Caitlin Clark effect. She will make them all rich if they they just would embrace her.

@@gciking Exactly. JuJu is a fantastic player but CC’s appeal is multifaceted, it’s her creative playmaking, long 3’s, like Bird, the ability to raise a historically average College bb program to new heights, the fact that she’s relatable, she seems like the girl next door, she doesn’t have dominant physical attributes or height which like Steph Curry and Stockton make her more relatable. Fair or unfair, people don’t gravitate towards JuJu or Paige or Aj’a or Breanna Stewart in the same way. Muhammad Ali was more famous and marketable than Joe Frazier. _@The Fumble_ Caitlin Clark has black fans, white fans, Asian fans, young fans, old fans, even international fans. It isn't just the white folk. Caitlin Clark has universal appeal, and it isn't about colour, it's about skill, personality, charisma and class. She is articulate, and she makes people laugh without putting others down. Caitlin always takes the high road and avoids rolling around in the mud like many of the petty WNBA players. She fights behind the scenes to get players paid more and to improve their conditions and their profile in the sports world. For all this, she continually receives hate and people keep mentioning race and colour as if that is the only variable in the equation. Why?

I hope you realize that there is very large part of CC fans that are black. There’s also several reasons she’s considered a “generational talent”. CC brings a level of excitement to the game, that very few have done before her. If the ball is in her hands when she crosses half court, are you gonna get a logo 3, are you get a drive to the basket or are you gonna get a dime to a rim runner, you never know. She may not even get past the opponents free throw line before she makes a full court pass. The other thing you didn’t take into consideration is, in the LA area there are a lot of different options for spending your entertainment dollar. How many of the professional games are sold out? Despite Iowa graduating 4 of their starters, every home game was sold out before the season started. If you remember during the 2023 tournament CC had a 40 point triple double against Louisville in the elite 8, than she had a 41 point game to help beat undefeated South Carolina. So she was drawing crowds before Angel did her thing with the you can’t see me and pointing at her finger. CC’s ability to lead basically a no name team that wasn’t loaded with 5 star recruits to national championship games not once but twice, is part of what makes her so popular.

Won golden gloves, won gold at the Olympics, beat an undefeated Ali in a Title fight and successfully held his title thru various title defenses against top notch opponents but for whatever reason, Ali’s gift of gab, his charisma and style of winning boxing just completely overshadowed Frazier.
People gravitated towards Ali, fairly or unfairly. It is what it is but that just how life be sometimes. People gravitate towards CC. Not JuJu

It’s interesting that nobody talks about how white basketball fans embraced Michael Jordan even though he is Black. Why did they embrace him (and buy his sneakers)? Because he was a great player, must see tv, and accomplished great things. Caitlin is like Michael - a great player, must see tv (obviously confirmed by the record tv viewership both in college and the WNBA), and accomplished great things (she took her team, which nobody thought would get to the Final Four, to beating an undefeated team and to two consecutive national championship games). They are both their generations’ most exciting player. Juju is an excellent player. But she has yet to accomplish anything great. Maybe she will, time will tell. The fact that USC fans don’t come out to watch her and her highly ranked team is sad (remember Iowa sold out their arena not only last year, but this year even without Caitlin).

Give JJ the time to mature. She's a baby still...probably the best prospect ever, but still a baby. Caitlin's ship has already sailed. The only things she has left to do is to win a championship (in thinking realistically 2026) and MVP (which she should've had last year). She's already broken 68 WNBA records. She's going to have to start breaking her own soon. 😂

There are lots of really good players--and being a great player doesn't make you a phenomenon like CC. Neither Juju (black) or Paige (white)---shades of Pulp Fiction here...will ever achieve what Clark has already done--not even remotely close. Y'all (Sumaria) are just tripping with these shallow narratives. Reese had little to due with Clark's rise or her fame--Reese's antics (i.e., lack of sportsmanship) were self-serving and simply expanded her profile off Caitlin's coattails. (For example, later in the WNBA, Chennedy Carter and Victoria Vivians both became household names overnight after sandbagging Clark. You didn't know who the fuck they were before that). Clark's notoriety wasn't derived from a "storyline"--it was because of her unique skills; the way she attacks the game; the way she controls the field of play; and the fucking ice-water in her veins. She's a phenom because of the WAYshe plays and her popularity has been expanding exponentially since she was 15 years old.
Excellent point about "curated internet"...but, Michael Jordan wasn't the most famous person in the world back in the day because of the 13% black US population.

Since Caitlin played 4 less games her Freshman season I added a total of 8 games into her Sophomore season.

    JuJu scored 1006 PTS on 335 FG of 832 FGA --- 264 FT’s of 312 FTA and 131 Assists
    Caitlin scored 978 PTS on 324 FG of 679 FGA -- 193 FT’s of 224 FTA and 270 Assists

LA has LOTS of professional teams and many different sports that run concurrently with USC basketball. Lots of competition.
A second issue is weather. Iowa weather sucks, and during the long winters inside sports (like women's basketball) offers a wonderful diversion. LA has wonderful weather, and many potential fans would rather go to the beach, mountains, or watch a Dodger WS that attend indoor women's basketball.

Also, her teams were winners. She built a large fan base in her home state. People appreciated that she was a modest, home-town girl who did not transfer out and abandon her fans. Had she done so, she would have had a championship ring and about as many fans as Angel Reese. People appreciate her loyalty. She's not just a hired gun. Plus, her play is spectacular. CC took Iowa teams where she was the only player and beat teams loaded with talent. CC handed South Carolina its only defeat in the last two years. She built a huge Midwest fan base, and now she is popular (almost) like Taylor Swift.

Please stop with “Angel is the antagonist to Caitlin which increased viewership.” Before I saw the 2023 LSU v Iowa game, I was already a huge CC fan. It was the 2024 Iowa season, along with the records CC broke, along with CC’s exciting style of play that brought millions of new eyes to women’s basketball.
Also, stop with the skin color argument. Tiger, Serena and Michael Jordan had HUGE followings, most of whom were white people. The huge crowds following Tiger himself and attending Serena’s (and Venus’) events were largely white. Yes, there were more blacks attending golfing and tennis events, but those sports were still overwhelmingly attended by white folks.
Caitlin Clark is so popular because of her skill set. She truly is a generational talent. Her style of basketball is something we’ve NEVER seen in the WNBA, and her passing skills are rarely seen even in the NBA. Steph Curry is one of the few who consistently makes “logo threes” like CC does.
The WNBA viewership, as well as that of USC and most college programs (Iowa is one of the few exceptions due to the CC Effect) is because the traditional women’s game is generally not an exciting sport. I follow the Lady Longhorns some years, and this year their post play is very strong, plus they have two outstanding guards. But the Longhorns’ game doesn’t have the wow-factor that CC brings. They are averaging 2.5 three-pointers per game. 2.5! That’s a bad game for CC. Now, the Longhorns average 19.5 assists per game (their opponents average 9.3 assists per game), but you rarely see a full court pass to a running teammate, or a behind the back pass like CC routinely does almost every game. How many “broken ankles” do we see in college basketball? Very few. When CC is handling the ball, her dribbling skill-set is so high-level, that even the best defenders can’t keep up.
Juju is only a sophomore and already has had an excellent career. However, USC games still follow the more boring style of play. No logo threes, no phenomenal passing, except on a rare occasion, and Juju’s excellent ball handling is due to the fact that she is a superior athlete to her competitors. She does not switch directions three or four times, dribbling between her legs and behind her back like CC does to get a clear drive to the basket, nor does Juju have the 3-pt shots and assist-making skills that CC does.
Consider this: USC averaged 1,037 in attendance in 2022-23. So. Carolina averaged 12,942 that same year. USC’s opponents averaged 2,524 in attendance (I’m guessing this is at USC’s away games). So. Carolina’s opponents averaged 7,819 in attendance that same year. We can blame the media and marketing departments all we want but a team’s success is what generates viewership. Caitlin has shown that in women’s basketball, if you want to generate viewership in a game that is kind of boring, compared to the men’s game (which has also gotten a little stale and a little too political), you need a superstar who brings the wow-factor (e.g. Dr. J, MJ, Magic, Bird, LaBron - Tiger, Nadal, Federer, Beckham, etc.).

I think Caitlin has a personality that has a sigificant effect on people and a stile of play. I don’t think color is a factor. Look at track and field- Carl Lewis, Bob Beamon (my personal favorite) and the current day black women runners and men that are extremely popular. Plenty white gymnasts, golfers and tennis players but people want Simone Biles and Tiger Woods and Serena Williams. Most of their fans are white as I am. Also there are many white players in the WNBA on all the teams and no one is filling arenas now or in the last 25 years. I’m 78 years old with 64 years in NYC. In business for decades I had up to 45 employees. Not only was it of no concern to me what color an employee was, more notably in 52 years in business i never heard any employee act or talk any differently to any other employee. I’m now in Florida and a black employee who I hadn’t heard from in about 10 years called after the 2 hurricanes to see if i was ok.

Its simple JuJu does not have the skill set as CC does. Yes, she beat Cc rookie college season point record but she also played 4 more games than Clark. JuJu is not even the top 5 players this season.

More relevant than the 4 extra games she played is the 200 extra shots Juju took to break that record. All only to outscore her by 121 points.

It has nothing to do with race or color. Paige is as white as it gets and she will NOT have the same impact as CC.
I could have purple skin and still watch CC. It's her personality and playing style that pulls eyes to watch her.

It seems like female announcers want to use race to explain CC'S stardom.. why can't it just be because she's the most exciting player by far....just wondering

Clark attracted normies who don’t really rock with basketball. Hence why the long threes appeal to them. Most of her fans aren’t real basketball fans. Whether it is because of race really doesn’t matter to me. I watched golf because of Tiger Woods. I would be lying if I said him not looking like the typical golfer wasn’t a factor.

I have not seen a more classless display than what Angel did in that championship game. In any sport that I have ever watched. And I only saw it after I discovered Caitlin in last year's tournament. They replayed it ad nauseum. That is Angel. I have zero respect for her character and me, me, me attitude.
You need to look at attendance at Caitlin's games home and away. There is no one close to her. In college or the W.

They need to stop with the Angel Reese Angle, It had some impact in the beginning, But a lot of the most recent fans are not even aware of any of that story line, Caitlin Just made the LPGA Relevant when she showed up, nothing to do with Angel Reese, she just has that '"IT" factor and her game is just exciting to watch, And the fact she stays out of the BS doesn't hurt. There's just positive vibes when you see her.

I didn't know anything about the Caitlyn & Angel rivalry when I started following Caitlyn this WNBA season. And I don't like being told I came out of the woodwork. I came for Caitlyns low go 3s & stayed for the unreal Assist passes. Didn't follow WNBA or NBA (since MJ era) before Caitlyn.

If the world were fair, people would be more invested in JuJu but the world picks who they choose and they chose CC. Joe Frazier deserved to have more popularity and support than he did but Ali cast a shadow that fairly or unfairly made Joe second fiddle even when Joe was 1-0 against Ali and was the world champion. Ali eventually evened it up but even before he did, Ali’s popularity was 10x greater than Frazier. That how life be sometimes. MacGregor is more popular than the entire UFC Roster no matter how many times he loses
