Jerry Lewis sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" at his last MDA Telethon in 2010

  • Jerry Lewis' last singing of "You'll Never Walk Alone." Originally from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical Carousel in 1945.
    From Wikipedia:
"In the UK, the song's most successful cover was released in 1963 by the Liverpudlian Merseybeat group Gerry and the Pacemakers, peaking at number one on the UK singles chart for four consecutive weeks. Sung by Liverpool fans in 1963, the song quickly became the anthem of Liverpool F.C. and is invariably sung by its supporters moments before the start of each home game with the Gerry and the Pacemakers version played over the PA system."
"The song Jerry Lewis perennially sang to conclude the event, 'You'll Never Walk Alone,' was originally written for the 1945 Broadway musical play, Carousel, by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Lewis has given conflicting accounts on the air as to the origin of his use of the song. According to his account at the end of the 2007 telethon, the song was suggested to him in 1964 by a disabled child, walking with a cane; it was suggested to Jerry as a song that would specifically represent physically disabled children.
In the 2010 broadcast, however, Lewis mentioned that he knew the song by heart, and was singing it that year for the "59th time", which would mean he had been singing it annually since he began hosting MDA telethons in 1952. Also, a recording of Lewis singing the song for a poster child was released as a cardboard record in 1959; that year, Rodgers and Hammerstein gave the MDA permission to use the song as the official theme for the organisation. When Lewis was removed as telethon host in 2011, the song was retired.
Between 2011 and the final telethon in 2014, there was a different song used each year to close the show."

Official Mission of The Everett and Austin Project:
The goal of the Everett and Austin Project, Inc. is to improve the health-related quality of life for children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and other rare diseases, and increase educational opportunities for individuals and families in developing countries. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disease that causes progressive muscle weakness, leading to disability, impaired function, and decreased ability to participate in daily activities.
Children in developing countries are often underserved, neglected, and/or abandoned by their parents. Some families live in remote areas with little to no access to medical and healthcare resources. Additionally, impoverished individuals and families struggle to meet their daily basic needs due to lack of much needed resources.
The Everett and Austin Project seeks to educate, empower, and equip individuals with products, services, and skills to improve overall quality of life and sustainable living in developing countries.

This horrible human being did NOTHING but make money for himself and all the "research" money went to line pockets. After all the years, after all the HUNDREDS of millions of dollars ............ this disease is still with us, and this cock sucker's sons got zero and his adopted daughter, with ZERO blood relation, got a ton from his estate. Lewis was a complicated man. For reasons we may never know he left his biological family nothing, some of them in need of his help, he’s been accused of sexual harassment. These faults cannot be ignored, but his philanthropy was on such a scale, and I’m being serious uplifted an entire nation. Seriously his telethons made me think we as a people across the country and the world could be better, strive for better, and not have to be alone.

Anybody who sees this video and still says that Jerry did these telethons out of ego to make himself feel important, you have absolutely no soul whatsoever. Yes, he was a flawed man and wasn't always kind to everybody, and wasn't good to his own offspring at times, but there is no doubt that he cared about these children suffering from this horrible disease, and a few rude moments will never undo all the good he did through 59 years of these telethons. So many people take up charitable causes when it affects them or someone close to them, but Jerry just simply cared about this disease and made it his life's mission to help raise money for research. He should be honored for that, not scorned by the cancel crowd whose hearts are so dark and souls are so void that they refuse to see an ounce of good in anyone they deem unworthy. The only way we are going to make this world a better place instead of a worse place is to recognize good whenever it is there, even when that good comes from people we otherwise dislike. We must keep our hearts and minds open to the possibility of positive change and, most importantly, redemption and forgiveness.

First last, let me commend you ,on your comments regarding jerr lewis.people are too concerned about his personal life, and the decisions he made.jerry must have had valid reasons to do what he did.people should be elaborating more,in regard to devoting his life to the telethon.what i observed watching the preparation for the telethon, was how many people loved and respected jerry lewis.no individual would volunteer their time,if they didnt have the highest regard for that person.the fact was, that jerry was loved by millions of people in the world.those millions of people, arent concerned about gossip.

I'm a very noctural, dark, autumnal introvert personality who lives for autumn, for me the time of ultimate spiritual rebirth, 3/4 of the year, I'm completely aggrieved, tormented by all the sunlight. Accordingly, every year, I'd look forward to the end of summer and beginning of autumn as marking the rounding of the turn, the sense that I'd made it through and a new beginning was upon me. What was the exact moment of this uplift for me: every year, it was Jerry singing this song.

Every labor day I looked forward with my dad and siblings to watch the telethon
Our local TV market ABC hosted this event
It was a community coming together to help others
Picnics, and volunteers at phone banks
If there was a hidden agenda it wasn't on the forefront
Times have changed but honestly not for the better
At 61 years old I miss these days
When I watch this video I cry knowing that so many people would be better if they experienced what we did
The talent that supported this event was incredible
    Leave the negative out
    Let's remember the humanitarian effort

I watched every single one of the nationally televised telethons starting in the 1960's. I know that does not make me unique, but this comedy genius had my heart...especially when he died 5 years ago this week in a hospital just 1 mile from my home where my life had been saved 14 years earlier. I told him that I was at the first Telethon and although we did not discuss it further, I could tell by the expression on his face that he was very moved.
