Why 2004 Maccabi Was The BEST EuroLeague Team Ever

- Tel Aviv Maccabi had its franchise peak between 2003 and 2005. It was like watching old clips or the European version of Showtime Lakers - they were fun, fast, and unbeatable.
In this video, BasketNews’ Augustas Suliauskas analyzes why this version of Maccabi was the best EuroLeague team ever assembled: how the core of Jasikevicius, Parker, Vujcic, and Baston was so efficient and why Pini Gershon was the perfect coach for this team.

Maccabi 2003-2005 was the most fun team ever to watch for sure. Then there was Panathinaikos of Obradovic; I believe that these two teams were the best ever.

it was amazing to be a Maccabi fan in those days. the individuals were so talented, the chemistry was so good, their game was so exciting. we called the 03-04 year "the ambulance season", since we won so many close games, people were passing out in the stadium and needed one. coach Pini Gershon and Jasikevicius were always fighting, since Jasikevicius didnt like taking orders. one night Jasikevicius's parents that visited Israel for the first came to see him play for the only time in Israel. Pini had a rule that in every game the first move will be a ball to the big guys under the basket for them to shot a solid shot. in that game Jasikevicius decided instead to take a 3. he missed. Pini benched him for the rest of the game, Jasikevicius played something like 20 seconds in the whole game that his parents came especially to watch. in the interview after the game Jasikevicius didnt make a fuss. he knew. on the other hand, one game Jasikevicius couldnt make a shot to save his own life, I think he was 0/8. we had one chance to win the game in the final seconds, and in the T/O Pini set a move for an isolation shot for Jasikevicius. the play worked, Jasikevicius banked it. in the post game interview Jasikevicius expressed shock that Pini gave him the final shot. despite their constant bickering they respected each other. Jasikevicius fit in Israel very well, even was married to an Israeli woman for a while. his tamper made him one of us, we accepted him with love. the rest were very good guys with a great temper, and winning always helps. it was a very intelligent team and you can see it in their game. if the first year was crazy, in their second year together it became easier. our second championship came smoothly, it's like we had no doubt we were the best. every Maccabi fan can reminisce with joy about those days.
I miss those Thursdays so much!!!!
BEST TEAM EVER
I remember those days - every night was a show of 90+ points and many many 20+ points win = definitely the BEST.

When u do videos about Maccabi 2004
It's shows u understand couple things in basketball
This is the team that got me into euro league basketball. I recorded the 2004 final 4 off NBA tv and rewatched those games over and over. 2004 was such a good basketball year for me.
This team of Maccabi brings me chills.
They were legit nba team.
That final was unforgettable and the partying afterwards.
They were the best show in EU!
I think David Blat deserved a video.
I was in the army of Israel that days, and everyone were a fun of Maccabi (expect the fun of Hapoel Tel-Aviv/Jerusalem), they were so good that me and my friend started to go against Maccabi to keep the game alive.
This team was so good that it send 3 of it's players to nba in times it rarely happened. Sharas yaskivichus, Anthony parker ( he did some unbelievable games) , and maceo baston .
Both Parker and Baston played in the NBA before they joined Maccabi, while Jasikevičius came as the Euroleague & Eurobasket champion.
Good video, you forgot that Pini’s first assistant coach was David Blat.
He had a lot of impact as well, and lead Maccabi as well for another european cup, managing to be head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.. 💫
It's sad that he is remembered as the coach who LeBron fired. He is a great coach and an excellent person.

OK... GREAT WORK AND BIG LIKE FOR THE UPLOADER
i hear a lot of stuff i can get behind and not just because it was a compliment
it was really true
the EU Showtime Lakers was spot on
it was a joy to watch each and every game
it was a fast paced team
all that stuff was on point
even the breakdown of plays was bringing out great memories
so thnk you for that
but i want to correct a couple of things
first the coaching
Pini Gershon was like motzart
the guy was so inventive it's redicilos
and he had one asistant coach maybe you heared about David Blatt
some might say he was the guy who was making the team run in training
when was the idea man was Pini and the one running the show with great subs everygame
we as fans trusted him completly even when we saw Obradovich on the other line
we were their... he was a GREAT COACH and so funny.
one other thing is the Maceo Baston -Draymond Green
no disrespect but Baston was way better and important to the team
Baston was a PF who can run the floor, jump sky high was a great shot blocker and rebounder
and was so cool to watch
the guy could dunk from the foul line
our "Draymond" was Sharp
and he was the glue guy
jump on every 50:50 ball and an energy guy
3 point specialist who can heat like a microwave
now let's talk about Burshtain
the guy was a 2.00M point guard
with all his talent
think about that when your facing guys like Sharas Parker Baston and Vuicic
so... if you want to talk about a mach-up nightmare
their is a picture fot you
and the bench
you did a great job their
but you left the Streach Four David Blue who can shot the lights out too
but the thing about this team
beside the AMAZING evefything probobly
GREAT CHOACHING BASKETBALL IQ FAST PACE PASSING 3 POINTERS DUNKS FANS
everything in just spot on and fell PERFECTLY within the team
we were their
the atmospere was like their's MAGIC in the air
the greatest was
thier waas absoulotly NO EGO
everyone knew their place
just a SMART Basketball team
It was just fun all around... and amazing to watch
no "BIG THREE" bullshit
that was a TEAM who liked each other and was aiming for everything
no one cared how much he scored or stuff like that
it was just
"LETS DANCE" feeling with this team
but all and all
great work uploader
tnks so much
I respect that but I will go with Panathinaikos 2008-2010. Obradovic, Itoudis at the coaching staff and: Diamantidis, Spanoulis, Jasikevicius, Nicholas, Calathes, Pekovic, Batiste, Fotsis and Alvertis. Damn! I mean, this is a dream team. I doubt any other EL team had this diversity, talent and heavy names in their roster, at the same time.

@@giannisglo6145 They were a good team but they were not as dominant as Maccabi in those years
There is no team that could be named better than 2009 Euroleague Champion Panathinaikos. Guards: Diamantidis, Jasikevicius, Spanoulis, Nicholas, Chatzivretas. Forwards: Fotsis, Tsartsaris, Perperoglou, Alvertis, Sakota, Kecman, Shermadini, Centers: Batiste, Pekovic. No other comments.
Olympiacos BC 2012-2013 is also one of the greatest teams ever because they achieved everything with one of the lowest budgets in the competition. That’s the big difference between olympiacos and other powerhouses who won the euroleague.
They won a title against one of the most powerful rosters ever in Europe (CSKA 2012) and did back2back next year with amazing basketball, dominating everyone in the final4 (cska again and Real Madrid).
Also even after losing some important core players they still managed to go to two more finals (2015-2017) still with one of the lowest budgets in the competition!
Lol
@@mour13 lol for what? If it is for the last place at the euroleague standings, I agree.
@@mour13 είπε ο 10 χρόνια εξαφανισμένος σε ευρωπαϊκό επίπεδο,παναθηναϊκός
The fact that you want to receive complements for winning with the worst possible roster is amazing. We don’t talk about biggest surprises here, but best teams. The cska team you beat that year was the best team in Europe by miles. You managed to steal the game. The next year you had a really really good team but not one of the best all time. The one you had in 2009 was better for example.
@@NK-dj7no The fact that you don’t know the difference between best team and best roster is amazing. I was talking about best TEAMS, not best roster. Many clubs throughout the history of the competition had great and expensive rosters but not the right chemistry to succeed and become the best teams. Olympiacos 2013 team proved that the success of 2012 wasn’t a surprise.
You forgot to mention Derrick Sharp! one of the greatest
Kinder Bologna '01 is the best FIBA team ever by far
totally agree
I thing you underestimate olympiakos and panathinaikos!Panathinaikos won 6 titles in 11 years (1996-2011) and in 2012 he should have been in the finals with olympiakos...As for olympiakos,he won the title in 2012 against 1 of the best teams cska had and the best in that year (For the record cska had only 1 loss in game that didnt matter to her)!Oly had inexperienced and young players, but they had persistence and passion that were unmatchable!2013 was the same,as for 2015 and 2017 he should have also been the champion, but the refs had played unfairly against olympiakos!
Ok.. maccabi win 3 in 4 years..
@@דקלנאור Did you watch me telling something bad about maccabi??Or did you get annoyed about my opinion?Either case,Olympiakos won the trophy against a cska with 10+ times the budget of oly and a cska who almost went undefeated in f4 and was the fiercest opponent and yet olympiakos stood up and won!Even panathinaikos could have won in semi finals, but the refs got the better of him!And many other achievements of the hellenic teams!!I just told that he kind of underestimated the hellenic teams!
Yugoplastika is the best euro team ever. It's even voted some years ago by the fans on fiba site i think, so it's official. Question was "which is greatest basketball euro team of 20 century" and Yugoplastika won. I think answer is same if you ask "ever" cause Yugoslav basketball of that time was out of this world, they even manage to beat Nba teams. It was harder to win Yugoslav national league then Euroleague, that's how good clubs were and Yugoplastika was best.
Agree, the best EU team ever.
"We will rock you"...
Come on mate... There is no comparison with Obradovic's Panathinaikos in 2009 season!! That was a trully dream team!
Let's see if I remember all the players ;
Dimitris Diamantidis , Kostas Tsartsaris , Antonis Fotsis , Fragiskos Alvertis , Nikos Chatzivrettas , Dusan Sakota , Vasilis Spanoulis , Stratos Perperoglou , Mike Batiste , Drew Nicholas , Sarunas Jasikevicius , Giorgi Sermandini , Dusan Kecman and Nikola Pekovic .
That man is truly A STACKED ROSTER .
Yes
as a panathinaikos Fan Born and raised i have to disagree. obradovic with diamantidis was just different
Barcelona 2010 and Pao 2009>>>
😂😂😂
Maccabi of 2004,2005 and even 2006 was defeating Pao all the time in double digit gap in Oaka and in Yad eliyhau and guss who played on Pao of those time, I will tell you Batists diamanitis and more but Maccabi made them look like a highschool players
@@gil7002 im saying pao 2009 not 2004-06; Having diamantidis, batist both best or one of the best at their positions at the time, spanulis, saras and greatest coach of all time? that whole era is special. Not only that but they had a lot of home-grown players which maccabi cant say.Pao destroyed everyone and didn't go with the logic "i will score 1 more point than them"
@@vulee100 the 1 point nore is just a joke for the press that got taken out of context.
in reality , pao2009 bearly won the F4 , won olympiacis by 2pts, and won cska by 2pts.
some will say pao wasent the best team even in 2009.
while maccabi 04 and 05 crushed teams in the final four including 44 point win in a FINAL.
if you judge a team by nameing players, the best team is TAU 2005 - calderon, macjiauskas, nocioni, scola, splitter .basiclly a full NBA team - and Maccabi crushed them also in the 2005 F4.
@@ofirhajaj thats true i just feel maccabi played a little too much on talent. I haven't watched them live but eventho i like their team i think they could've done more
Yes they were the best and then Olympiakos 2011-2013 also with back to back titles.
FC Barcelona in 2010. Lost only 2 games in EL that season. Crushed the F4.
Agree 💯%
ok now show us panathinaikos 2009
panathinaikos 2009?
I from israel and i agree
I agree if it is mentioned as a question. WHY?
Olympiacos 2011-2012,2012-2013 back to back champions
You are drunk. The 2008-2009 Panathinaikos is the most complete roster ever assembled in euroleague paired with the goat Obradovic. Diamantidis, Spanoulis, Jasikevicius, Alvertis, Fotsis, Batiste, Pekovic, Chatzivrettas, Drew Nicholas, Tsartsaris. Ridiculous talent and depth
