Legend! Thanks for sharing Simon, you can never watch too many Simon Leach demo vids if you want to improve your throwing skills!

Simon you have helped me so as I struggle with the wheel! I feel like I’m getting lessons one on one!
Thank you so very much !

Thank you for such a helpful video! Everything that went wrong in my first attempt to throw a 4lb bowl this morning was answered/explained by your video (I should have watched your video before my attempt, not after! Never mind, there's always tomorrow!)!

I infrequently throw off the hump but the problem can be that S cracks can occur, mainly due to lack of compression at the bottom the pot due to the fact that there is not a solid wheelhead under the base of the pots.
Try throwing off the wheelhead for larger bowls anyway and I think you should overcome that problem.
One can develop a tecknique for hump throwing whereby you squeeze the shank of the hump just under the base of the pot as you form the inside bottom of the bowl - hard to explain!

another tip is to flip the bowl as soon as it is dry enough to do so so that the bottom dries evenly/faster than the top. If you still are trimming this method works great as well.

Would love a go on one of your wheels, it looks so relaxing compared to my electric wheel.

Thanks so much for sharing the tip on what to do when you feel a weak point. Do you suppose a heat gun for crafting would work as well?

Thank you for the demo, It has been very helpful. Here is a question, what causes a large bowl to crack on the second firing? My teacher said it was something to do with not enough compression or something, I dont understand that concept, can you give us some idea of what that means, and how to keep this from happening?

Also, is this what you meant by a weak point in your pot?

How can you tell you have a weak point in your pot?

Simon, why do you use a mirror???

It offers another point of view, especially of the profile of the pot. As he says in his excellent book, it's akin to using the rearview mirror when backing into a parking space... ; )
