- La Palatine: Elisabeth Charlotte, Princess of the Palatinate, called Liselotte of the Palatinate (born May 27, 1652 in Heidelberg, died December 8, 1722 in Saint-Cloud near Paris), was the Duchess of Orléans and sister-in-law of King Louis XIV of France.
In 1671 she married Duc Philippe D’Orléans, the only brother of the "Sun King”. After the death of Louis XIV in 1715, her son Philippe II D’Orléans became regent of France until 1723.
Although she only had two surviving children, she became not only the ancestral mother of the House of Orléans, but also the ancestral mother of numerous European royal families. Through her daughter, Elisabeth Charlotte D’Orléans, she was the grandmother of, among others, The French Queen Marie Antoinette.
La Palatine is most famous for the correspondence between her and her aunt Sophia, which provide an extremely detailed report of the daily life at the court of Versailles. The approximately 60.000 letters of La Palatine were published as early as the eighteenth century, and still contain a wealth of information for historians today.

In the series Versailles though there was a form of a friendship depicted between Philippe, De Lorraine and Liselotte. In history, this wasn’t the case unfortunately.

I find myself empathizing with royal women sent to foreign courts/countries for political marriages. She seems to have made the best of her situation and l find her quite interesting. 👸

In Germany,there is a book with the collected letters she wrote. Its very entertaining.
I can only imagine how homesick she probably was and how horrific it must have been for her when her family was destroyed by her “ new family” She sounds brilliant,she would have been a great friend to have IF she ever trusted any of her new countrymen or women.It must have been very boring for her in a court where everyone seems to have had a specific role to play and individualism was frowned upon.It would be wonderful to read anything that she wrote about.🖐 🌈 🇨🇦

I read a book about her. She was a very fascinating princess indeed. From what I've read, unlike most people of her time, she was very open minded. She was also very critical of religious fanaticism.

I think so, her husband did not give her enought money ( he spent it on lovers), and she was not alowed to leave France (so she could not go visit her daughter or relatives)

I think she had some sadness in her life at times, like everyone does. I'm sure it wasn't easy having him for a husband. But it looks like he treated her well most of the time. I've had the first and only comment for days now. Hasn't anyone else watched this?

I agree. Keeping in mind that royal marriages were about land, titles, money, and alliances, it really wasn't at all necessary to "love" each other, they simply had to fulfill their respective duty-roles to have a successful and lasting marriage. "Love" was for fun with the side-candy ;-)

There were a couple of rare instances, where politics & love ended up coinciding- Liselotte’s grandmother was Elizabeth Stuart, sister of Charles I- their father, James wanted an alliance with a Protestant power, & settled on Frederick, Elector of the Palatinate- despite plenty of people thinking he wasn’t of high enough rank for her, including her mother - nevertheless, he was invited to England & spent time with her & her elder brother (the sibling she was closest to)- Henry’s approval meant a great deal to her, & when he unexpectedly died- her international marriage status increased, so there was even more opposition to her match- however, James was still in favour of it, & his friendship with the late Henry increased Elizabeth’s acceptance to such a point she wouldn’t hear about anyone else- they had several children before his somewhat premature death.
No, Monsier didn't treat her well. I read (her) collection of letters-diary entrys she made from when she arrived at Versailles til Louis XIV death thru her sons regency. Madame wrote and wrote and wrote to her very close aunt in Hanover (who was the heir presumptive to Englands throne-her son was George I). Its A REALLY GOOD READ. She's very-very funny.

No I haven't, although I've read books in which her letters were discussed... She does seem to have had a great sense of humour throughout it all. I'm not sure I'm good at making a video 'funny' but I certainly will try !

Did any of the letters between the Chevalier de Lorraine and the Duc de Orléans survive?
Not that I am aware of. La Palatine burned all the correspondence between Philippe and his lovers to avoid scandal at his time of death.
It's somehow sad to read her letters. But it's interesting to compare them with the letters by Madame de Sevigné and the correspondance of other German rulers or for example Sophie of Brunswick. Her style in writing a mix of French and German is typical for her period although his simple words for details is remarkable. Thanks for your series. I love the different picture from her lifetime.

These videos are excellent! I gobble up two every morning to start the day! always felt a kind of admiration mixed with loathing for Louis XIV and I think the fact that England and Holland became so firmly parliamentarian during this period of history - and especially in the case of Great Britain - was because both countries had decades to watch just how uncaring an autocratic, narcissistic, absolute monarch could be with regards to his people. As a man, he had good qualities but as a ruler he was a tyrant. It also seems that the worse a king was back then, the more greedy and grasping the mistresses were. It seems like attracts like.

As melancholic as this sounds because she was treated as an outcast. Her suffering pails in comparison to the millions of French citizens who suffered and died while their king fought wars to glorify himself and not the state. We can talk about the reign of Louis XIV for hours. But for certain Louis spending and outlandish grandeur left him blind to his people’s misery. Imagine what Paris would have became of Louis XIV spent the money on the city and not Versailles.
He was a tyrant in his later years and very much different from his early reign
Hi Mike, I agree. He wasn't loved at all in his final days either ... Hardly anyone showed up for his funeral procession, mostly they were glad he was gone. A sad ending to the life of a glorious king.

Liselotte hated not only her daughter-in-law Françoise-Marie but her kids (her own grandchildren) as well just because their mother was born out of wedlock

The more I learn about French history, the more I see how accurate Dumas was with his works.
I am excited for the French production of the Three Musketeers. They started filming this past September. I really hope they do the story justice.
They should dramatize the whole series. There is so much great history in the d'Artagnan Romances. I cried like a baby at spots in the Man in the Iron Mask. What an emotional book! ❤️

She is the paternal granddaughter of Prince Rupert son of Elisabeth Steward sister to Charles I of England
Liselotte became an enemy of Louis Auguste Montespan's boy she actually said once that she was sure that Louis Alexander was a son of the king but Louis Auguste was not fathered by Louis
Both of Philippe’s wives were related; Henriette Anne/ Minette was the daughter of Charles I of England- his sister, Elizabeth married Frederick- who was Elector of the Palatinate; they had a lot of children before his somewhat premature death - Elisabeth’s aunt Sophie was mother of the future George I of Great Britain...

I was just thinking about that. Always interesting to see how royal family trees mix and mingle. She was the great granddaughter of James the first of England, and her great Granddaughter was the Queen of France and her first cousin was George the First of England.
I Read her bio. She had a bad deal. Phillipe d'Orléans used to walk around with a group of gay guys who followed him everywhere called "les mignons." Which means the cute ones.
When they were just newlyweds, she caught him in bed with another man she said " I guess I'll have to learn to live with this". And didn't complain about his lifestyle.
They say that the first time she saw him she was shocked. He was so effeminate. Covered with bows, flounces, lace and pompoms.
But she was a tomboy, the opposite of him. She loved hunting, dirty jokes; all type of male oriented sports; and got along very well with her brother in law King Louis 14th.
People at court used to joke. That she is very much the man, while he is very much the woman...

Yes correct. She did not want her son to be married off to one of the ‘bastard’ children of the king. She was so upset she turned her back on him. A bold move for sure !

I think she played the court game pretty well. I would assume she wouldn't have thought her marriage to be one for live but politics. She seems pretty brave and accepting of her situation. I wouldn't think after being friends with the king he would have been so displeased by her letters he would have banished her. I see her as smart and savvy. She outlasted them to come into prominence. Another great video. Many thanks.

She wrote 60K letters? That's technology - I don't think most of us have written 10 letters in our lifetime with telephones/cells, texting/messaging! I don't believe people know how to write except in script/typewriter. When I went to school we had to take calligraphy classes for 2 yrs, but this was in Europe. Handwriting was considered an art form. She was educated as to the importance of her position and further on, at the Versailles Court. Loved the show on Netflix!
