Translations a little off too. He specifically says "...since this doesn't concern you". The original translation sounds like Gons saying Killua doesn't care enough but really Gons saying that it doesn't concern him specifically as Kite was someone close in relationship to Gon (because of his father) while Killua only new Kite recently.

@@FrostandFlame89 I would say that that's because we tend to think about the Killua we see throughout the show, but the Killua we see in the Hunter exam, who is already drifting apart, still has the attitude of someone who definitely did... And, well, he confirmed at the end of Greed Island.
I empathized heavily with Milena's tears at min 16:44. The words that Gon reserved for Killua were truly filled with disappointment and rejection, emotions that Killua absolutely DID NOT deserve from Gon, And the fact that Killua "took that hit" so silently by his best friend, makes those words more and more heavy.
However, the context obviously makes Gon's sharp reaction understandable and pitiable (in a positive way). Gon was literally first overwhelmed and then broken by a tsunami of emotions that no twelve-year-old could have handled.

This episode is a work of art. It shows the depth of Gon and Pitou's personality. Killua realizes that ants are not just murderous monsters, but that there is a human feeling.

I seen a lot of people reacting to this episode, and almost no one made the connection that Gon’s rage is largely due to his abandonment issues from Ging, a lot of people don’t really understand Gon’s character. Goes to show that you guys understand the character well.👌

I think it's very interesting to see how different male and female reactors deal with moments like this. The guys usually projects their own anger issues and repressions and end up getting hyped when a characters loses his composures, on the other hand the women have a much more nuanced and mature approach to it. This moment is hinted throught the whole show, Gon is a kid and is completely unable to deal with frustration and with his own shortcomings.

Ging never abandoned Gon.....He knew as a hunter, he was not really capable of raising a kid....So he chose whatever was best for Gon.......Ging literally set the whole life of Gon into motion right from the start through various means....If Ging really wanted to abandon Gon, he would have never brought him to the Whale island to his home and family.....He already did way more than many of the anime dads out there
The best anime reactions on youtube easily. You guys have such a good understanding of characters, themes of the show and the story the arc is telling. I just finished watching Studio Gek watch this show and they would just complain 90% of the time because of "slow pacing" or 'So boring there's no fights". Such a breath of fresh air watching reactors that aren't tik tok brain and actually want to see story and character development and not just fights 24/7.

Greyness doesn’t exist in children. Most can rarely comprehend the complexity, chaos and most importantly contradictions in the ‘real’ world and in humans. This is Gon’s first taste of pure grief and he responds like any child would. Add Nen to the mix and all the potential and … well you get this.
Togashi is a true master of storytelling and character. And Gon is one of his best creations. And all he needed to do was write a realistic child.

Her portrayal of Gon throughout the 2011 HxH is an absolute standout in the medium of anime. Any time a clip of this episode is on my Twitter feed I have to stop and watch it.
What an absolute masterclass of voice acting! Happy, joyful, kindness, rage, cold fury, deep sadness, confusion, pure hatred. Her Gon is a triumph. She stands with the greats.

Tying Ging and Gon's abandonment issues to these scenes on your first watch is really great. It's something that a lot of fans disregard when they watch this episode and end up simplifying Gon's actions in the process but Im glad you guys are looking more into Gon's mind beyond just "he's a monster 😱"
One of the best parts about Gons character is despite how obvious his actions seem on the surface what makes up his thought process is usually kept in subtle details and connections
That last part is like the stairs scene with everyone frozen when Dragon Dive hit. Gon does a simple thing , running forward but it's packed with reasoning. Gon has always been instinctually intelligent, I love the character consistency

Yes, Gon's rage comes from the relationship that Kite had with Ging so he connects him to his father somehow, plus he was the reason that Gon wanted to become a hunter and also he feels guilty and he is scared that he will let Ging's down. Remember he didn't wanna lose to Raizor because of this.

From Gon's perspective, he has had to wait for months and months for this moment, and everyone around him enabled him bottling up his emotions instead of talking about it, including Killua who, by the way, specifically told Gon to focus entirely on Pitou and disregard even other people being killed right in front of him, but now that he finally gets to have that confrontation, he is told he must wait even more for the enemy's convenience... Pitou never waited for them back in NGL, so why should he? Why should he trust that Komugi is even an innocent person at this point? Killua trying to stop him now just comes across as hypocritical and insane from the perspective of the mission as this would be the perfect opportunity to kill Pitou instead of risking millions of lives. That's not to say that Killua is wrong for trying to stop Gon, but I dislike the way many people frame him as the paragon of morality here when he is mostly uncomfortable with the idea of Gon not being the "light" anymore, as well as concerned with how Gon might feel about this after the mission is over, I highly doubt he actually cares about Komugi when he was literally planning to sacrifice innocent people in the city to distract the Chimera Ants back when Gon had his Nen sealed. Killua is a child just like Gon and he is acting out of emotions just as much, he feels like he is losing what Gon is to him and because he attaches his worth to their relationship, he is stuck between not being able to confront him about it and watching him descend. He has fully committed to the role of support while Gon burns himself out (think of the Dodgeball game) instead of actually expressing how he really feels.
Gon also has a lot at stake here, it's not just that Kite is a friend, he is his savior and the person most connected to Ging. To make it worse Gon feels responsible for what happened to Kite. If he can't save the man who saved him, he would feel worthless as a person and undeserving of being with Ging, so he must prove his worth, hence why he says "fight me so I can get Kite back" in that order; in his mind fighting and defeating Pitou is the trial he must pass first before receiving the reward of restoring Kite, if Kite is brought back without him having done anything he might as well have failed the "test". I really dislike when people make it about Gon being a "monster" here when he is just a kid with extreme self-esteem and identify issues who is being pulled in opposing directions by everyone around him, and is now forced to confront one of the most uncomfortable situations imaginable. It is, as he says, just unfair.
I don't think the way he said it was appropriate, he was unfairly lashing out at Killua, but there is some truth to the fact that saving Kite is not something Killua has to care about much, he is here because Gon is, and he cares because it affects Gon, but from Gon's perspective he is all alone in the rage and anguish he is experiencing, and that is truly one of the most frustrating feelings one can feel, it's very invalidating, like he is is suddenly being made to be the bad guy in the situation for having feelings (a healthy way of communicating this would have been something like: "I'm frustrated because it feels like I'm the only one who has to deal with this pain right now and you're sending me mixed messages").
The tragedy here is that both Gon and Killua have very valid feelings about this situation but neither of them is equipped enough to have a conversation about it and communicate the issues their relationship has due to their trauma (Killua feeling like he will be abandoned if he isn't useful, Gon feeling like he will be abandoned if he isn't strong), it is not the one-sided conflict that people think it is, although Gon's mistakes are certainly more direct and hurtful.

Really well said - I think people are quick to frame Gon having this 'monster' moment because we have had it told to us so many times that Gon is 'a monster' or 'like a monster' or 'scary/terrifying' - now that he is exuding so much ferocity, it's easy for shonen fans to get lost in the tension of it all.
The 2011 version really has a 'show, don't tell' issue in that it is mostly always spoon feeding its audience the feelings and surface level nuance of what is happening - I found this episode particularly egregious with the "pitou said...the truth" and many more instances. To me, this is where I am unable to even open my mind to this level of media literacy analysis and thought about the show that you are displaying here. Something about the show (but more obnoxiously the narrator) telling us everything that is happening on screen and every emotion being felt in ludicrously prolonged sequences instead of letting the audience have time to think and ponder on their own perceptions just makes me brain completely shut down and just enjoy this arc for the bits I can - the phenomenal VAs and phenomenal storyline. Always makes my heart wonder what an original '99 would look like, or a remake even.
TLDR thankyou for writing out stuff like this, gives me angles that I can't usually get to on this arc as I struggle immensely with the narrator and the storytelling, despite the story being, in my opinion, one of the best shonen arcs in history.

Talking about gon for 400 lines and only mentioning ging once is ridiculous. Gon is depicted as a selfish child, as a bad person, he always has been. There is absolutely no moral justification to his action, even within his compass, that’s basically what the whole scene means. Blaming people for thinking so low of gon after this scene is just beyond stupidity, it is exactly what the author wants us to feel.

Kite is the reason why Gon didn’t die in the forest, and Gon learned through Kite that he has a father, and that said father is is still alive.
Back when Gon & Killua returned to Whale Island,
Gon showed Killua the place where Kite saved him, and he told Killua that Kite is the person who inspired him to become a Hunter.
The anime omitted these important scenes.
I think it goes deeper than this, I think Gon hated the feeling of hopelessness when they first met Pitou. He's mad that he's ready now and not back then. Gon has something dark inside of him imo.
I know it is a very unpopular opinion but imo the 2011 anime omission on Gon-Kite relations doesn't change THAT much the significance of these moments in Chimera Ant's arc. Like people told them to watch 1999 anime first ep and I don't think it was really necessary

I love that the comments in your videos are always mostly just as thoughful as you guys. When we see comments and reactors with hxh always have a lot of people misunterstanding this characters or calling gon a monster. This is really refreshing. Nature is healing 🙏
I'm 100% here for my boy Gon. Despite all the bad things you'll hear and read, I think the first thing about him is that he has a heart of gold, and he values relationships, friendship above all else, because that's what he's lacked his whole life. He had no father and no friends before the Hunter's exam. So after meeting Leorio, Kurapika and Killua, he did all he could to protect them. We saw a lot of Gon, many times giving everything for his dear friends, without hesitation. I find it hard to believe that people forget that this is a key aspect of his personality.
For a good part of the series, his friends, especially Killua, didn't need to be saved or protected by Gon. Then came the Chimera ants, and Gon's inability to save Kite broke him. Kite was a friend, a comrade, and something more. What more exactly, depends on which version of the show you watched.
Here, in this scene, he is at the limit of his trauma. He is on the verge of breaking down. He hates Pitou immensely, but he also hates and blames himself for not being strong enough to save him.
Gon has many problems. He has lacked proper guidance for far too long. He is reckless. He focuses like a laser on what he wants because he's always used his will and his abilities, fully and freely immersed in nature (also because he's Ging's son). But he's not inherently evil, and please, don't be the person who compares him to the likes of the Spiders. He is not a cold-blooded killer, he will not kill people casually because they are in his way. For the Spiders, killing is Tuesday. For Gon, being about to kill is the worst day of his life.
It's also great that Killua is starting to learn his self-worth here. It was about time. Still, I have Gon's back 24/7.

People need to understand, before this Gon lived a happy life, he is loved for all his life by aunt Mito, he has never truly experienced real pain and real loss. It turns out if you throw kids into trauma inducing situations they have to grow up really quickly and that creates lasting scars on the persona. Children who are forced to mature before they should, often find themselves with a complex web of mental issues to work through, which is depicted on this episode really well. Killua on the other hand is the exact opposite he has known nothing but pain, because of his harsh assassin training thus he has the.... I'm trying to find the right word but let's just go with "tools" or the "capacity" to work with dealing with these issues. Also let's not forget that Killua's family kinda f*** him up, early in the series he has a dead view of the world because of all the trauma he's gone through it's only after meeting Gon he kinda found that spark again.
It's great how they analyze the episode. They are the best. This episode has it all. 10/10

16:44 you know this episode is full emotion when you take the time to animate the feels of Killua after Gon said one of the most painful phrases to him. It was shocking, but he must answer to his friend that is totally out of mind, taking a breath and gulp for recover his composure, but finally it was too painful for Killua (shown after when he face to Palm and cry inconsolably).
Really sad episode.

And let's not forget that Gon kept just a tiny little bit of innocence in him (that he trusted Pitou was able to heal Kite) even during extreme anger, without which he would have killed Pitou on the spot.
He couldn't have killed pitou right then and there without being in his adult form...remember if gon were to actually attack pitou there, pitou would probably prioritise her life and use her nen on gon and killua, and in that state gon and killua wouldn't even be able to scratch pitou

Btw, "Since it means nothing to you" is a mistranslation, what Gon really said was "since this is none of your business". Gon was not saying that Killua has no capacity for caring, but that this wasn't his fight in the first place, which is arguably even more hurtful to Killua who wants to be a part of Gon's journey and support him. He was conforming Killua's worst fears that he does not want or need him right now.
As for Kite, he represents many things. He is the man who saved Gon's life and taught him his first lesson about the way the world works. Gon felt ashamed of his weakness in that moment and it stuck with him throughout the series, he feels a debt to Kite and that he needs to show him that he has now grown strong. Kite changed his life and inspired him to get this far, he is a Hunter who earned Ging's respect, which makes him the ideal Hunter, Gon idolizes him and believes he can make no mistakes, and wishes to become like him in order to feel a sense of self-worth. That's why when Kite ends up that way, Gon has to cope by blaming himself and taking responsibility because that's easier to accept than Kite not being perfect, which would mean he could never become perfect and thus never gain Ging's respect (in his mind at least).
About Ging, you are definitely on point with how he is affecting Gon, the story doesn't go out of its way to tell you directly, but it is absolutely there in the subtext.
God, why do they have to go and mistranslate some of the most crucial lines in the show lol. That's a completely different meaning.
Killua pretends to be calm for Gon's sake, but Gon senses the difference in their feelings, and is pushed even further into a corner. A sad misunderstanding between friends.

Regarding Killua knowing about his granpa's ability...a normal person can also see the energy from nen attacks. The nen is invisible only when the nen user applies "In" (not to be confused with "En") to their ability. For example, Hisoka uses In to hide his Bungee Gum, and Kurapika used In to hide his chains when he tied up Uvo. But In can be seen if you use "Gyo" and focus it on your eyes.

It might be plot hole. But it can be explained by illumi special nen needle. U can say anything about illumi but u can't say he feels strong emotion for killua. I think illumi has ability to manipulate memory and control some one on subconscious level hance killua leave nanika in jail.

Gon's attitude can be seen as hypocritical for giving killers like Killua the opportunity to grow, yet he couldn't blame him. He knows the direct victim, Kite, and that changes how he can objectively analyze the situation. Victims of traumatic events can't be expected to empathize with their perpetrators; that's what the police and courts are for, theoretically impartial entities tasked with resolving the matter considering both sides. But here, Gon can't see the bigger picture because the case hits close to home. He didn't know Killua's victims, perhaps why he doesn't make the distinction
I totally agree with u here and I'd like to add that a even better example is how Gon quickly forgave Genthru in Greed Island's arc, even though he was previously VERY mad on him for killing people and messing up his father's game

Stop if the user pre-set a distance to this or reaches the "destination" that the user sets or stops when that dont have the energy to go any longer( just like when Gon was training with Biskye to make a small ball of nen reach the rock)

on 8:20 my only thought was "oh how beautiful and sad it is to witness someone's final moments of laughter". anyway, since your reaction episode 1 I've been waiting for this particular moment, my favorite episode in the show. from now on, you'll start to see a lot of "gon became a monster" takes, and I don't agree with them particularly. I think he's more human than ever, especially because he's showing realistic emotions of a child that has a lot of difficult feelings on his plate to deal with, and he doesn't know how to process every single one of them. truth is, they shouldn't have gone through all that in first place, lacking so many emotional management skills - Gon is suffering, and he doesn't know how to reason his anger and grief together with his merciful nature - and that explains why he's wavering.

Killua knowing about “Dragon Dive”:
Never thought about it, but I can think of 2 answers. SPOILERS AHEAD.
First option. You don’t need to know Nen to be able to see it, someone as talented as Killua could have seen it before without understanding what it was, just like Machi seeing Renko’s Nen. Maybe he saw grandpa training, at work or maybe grandpa used to take him on Sunday trips riding “Dragon Head”. Now, this could create another problem, because it would be normal for him to want to learn about this power, but it’s possible that after Illumi planted his needle on Killua, he was just controlled to ignore anything related to Nen, Killua suggested that it was because of the needle that he forgot about Alluka. A good reason for them to do this, would be that they noticed Killua wasn’t going through the path they wanted, so they decided that it was better for him not to learn about Nen and forget about anything related to it so he wouldn’t become independent. After he took off the needle, he was able to remember everything and connect the dots.
Second option. Before deciding what power to develop with Hatsu, he did a lot of research. Just like with the fight between Hisoka and Kastro or Leorio punching Ging, you can see the Nen abilities in a recorded video. So, maybe, when he got his yo-yos from Milluki, he also asked about the abilities of his family members or found some recordings of their training, fights or a “Top 10 best grandpa hits” video. He has a very inquisitive nature, so he would definitely investigate other people’s abilities to come up with a very powerful one.
Anyway, it could be that it was just a plot hole, but I just came up with these ideas on the spot, maybe there are many other options.
I think they sould REALLY watch Parasyte, it's a short anime, but the focus is about that "human stuff"
I really like that show ... But I've never been more like "Who's side am i really on , are there even sides" in shows that try to do this than I've been on the later half of the Chimera Ant arc of HxH .

Something i really like in this is the throwback to the arm wrestling with Nobu, Gon said something along the lines of "how can you cry for a friend after the people you've killed ?" with such indignation, he flared his aura enough to win the match. KIllua knowing that he must abolutely not tell gon that pitou is actually doing something nice after the horrors she did to Kite is so telling. The poor boy is so black and white in his visions of stuff, the idea of the monster he spent months hating doing something so selfless after taking away his mentor/replacement dad figure is way too much for him.
There is no black and white vision here. Gon was right in saying that to both Nobu and Pitou. Although in Pitou's case, this was her first instance of ever coming across a feeling called empathy.

Gon questioning their hypocrisy of not being able to extend their care to the people they have killed, does not mean he can't comprehend how serial killers can feel that emotion at all. Gon knows it, he is just annoyed at this straight up injustice. Don't know how this translates to black and white vision. It's just a misinterpretation of Gon's morality for judging people based on their present actions and behaviour.

I honestly never realized that part of the reason gon was so angry was because of ging I am so glad I came across this channel it made made me see many things differently things I probably wouldnt have noticed otherwise thank you for such amazing reactions.
Kite didn't just tell Gon why his father left him, he was the one that told him that he has a father in the first place and is still alive, Kite literally changed Gon's life and impacted him in ways that no one had ever done before. Also, Kite was like a father figure to Gon, since Gon never had that in his life. So yeah, Kite is really that important to Gon.
The first mistake of the 2011 versione was not showing Kite in the first episode, the second one was the show making Gon not even remember him. In the manga after they meet, Gon doesn’t forget Kite and mentions him throughout the story more than once. Unlucky

Oh my god, i think i've figured something out after rewatching this for the 1000th time:
When Gon is chastising Killua about "having it easy, because it doesn't mean anything to him". He's admitting that Kite is dead, even though he's subconciously supressing the thought of it the whole season, with both of them actually knowing for sure that he's dead. He's angry at Killua for using Kite's corpse as an excuse to stop his revenge. He knows he can't get Kite back, and knows that Killua knows it aswell.

The answer to the question: How was Killua able to see Nen when he was young? The answer is simple because it has been said in many episodes that a person who is naturally gifted can use Nen and see it without realizing it. For example, Gon was able to use Zetsu before he knew anything about Nen, and also Gon was able to He felt and see Hisoka's aura during the Hunter Exam, and Killua was also able to see and feel Illumi and Zushi's aura. As for the most clear answer, at the beginning of the episodes of the ant arc, when Buckle was fighting with the spider ant Pike, Pike was able to see and hold the nen arrow of Buckle and also Zazan, despite their lack of knowledge of nen at that time, and the rest of the ants were unable to see the nen arrow, and Colt was able to come up with the answer that they had the abilities. Only talented people can see this aura, so Killua was obvious to see Nen when he was young, but he thought it was a normal ability, like his ability that replicates his form when he fights someone
Kurapika also dodged his trainers attack in the forest too...

Tbh I never really cared much for trying to explain this inconsistency away because it honestly doesn't change anything, even if Killua didn't recognize Dragon Dive he would have still been later than Gon in realizing the situation, and eventually would have met Zeno anyway and put things together the same way.

Maybe it is intentional or maybe not but it's somewhat iconic to see one evolve into a monster that's willing to kill and the other evolves to someone more human that shows an act of humanity and learns to preserve life.

While Meruem starts as a monster and becomes more and more human, Gon goes in a dark path, losing more and more of his humanity and releasing that "beast/monster" inside him, that's been teased throughout the show.

The level of emotions that this chapter manages is impressive. Tension at all times. Gon completely overwhelmed and Pitou demonstrating his evolution as happened to the king with Komugi.

Se Killua non avesse fermato Gon, Gon avrebbe attaccato Pitou, uccidendo Komugi. Per Gon, Komugi non esiste. Non esiste nulla se non la sua vendetta. In questo momento Gon è l'essere vivente più carico d'odio al mondo. Mentre Pitou sta facendo di tutto per salvare qualcuno.
Questa è la miglior saga di ogni manga/anime. Così intensa e ricca di punti di vista da non avere senso. CAPOLAVORO. E le cose migliori devono ancora arrivare.
