- Posted by nostalgoteket.se U.K. Newsreel. A look at the River Thames, its past and present, from source to the sea. An examination of what has been done and is being done to modernize port services and to keep traffic moving-from holiday pleasure seekers to bustling commerce.
As a little kid, my dad used to take me down to Erith waterfront in the late fifties to see the ships go past. The council had put a display of funnel markings in a huge cabinet. By the early seventies all the ships had gone and the town demolished to put up a crap concrete one.
Absolutely wonderful series!! Thanks so much for posting them! I'm publicising them all over the place.
Wonderful film-a Look At Life gem. 4.01-4.05 is the Queen Caroline Estate,Queen Caroline St.Hammersmith, built on the bomb site which was one of the haunts of Roy Walsh (James Kenney) and his gang in the classic 'Cosh Boy' (1953)
Wonderful series worth watching. River Thames 1963. Look at Life, I love it.
Great video, thank you for uploading ❤️
Ah, the good old days
The old east end stevedores or dockers were great , they would steal as much as possible , but they were good honest thief's , and they loved their old mums, they loved getting drunk and fighting , but they were always happy , as long as they were giving some poor sod a good kickin , you can't beat the old days , have a banana and all that
rrrpppbbb Don't forget the Krays! Good to their mum, everyone left their doors open
Good old days and beautiful ships
A great series, I was 17 when this one was made.
No fatties in those days when people worked for a living. Brilliant video. Thanks.
ENJOY the film about the Thames the docks men discharging lighters brought me back many years I sailed with Blue Star line ?many thanks .
Lovely to see the boatman skulling his boat across from a few jars in between ships... it wasn’t that long ago our local boatman were doing the same! Now it’s all motor boats and alcohol test every month, bloody shame how the worlds gone!
great video beautiful ships !!
we got a bit of damage in a storm in the great Australian bite about the 1950 s in the Wellington star
When times were still good.
only through rose-tinted glasses
Snap! What a fantastic source of memories ... they used to play these at the cinema as well as the main and "B" film and the cig adverts, oh and I forgot the newsreel. Was this all true or am I just dreaming?
Thank you for posting this. Wonderful!
Dam sight nicer London-then looking at those old RT buses
Dockers self destructing I was there London Liverpool it was shameful
Just seen the Pacific Envoy.Does anyone remember ourFurness Withy/Prince Line Mud Pilot Mr.George Hebden?
Not a container on sight! A few years from this(maybe 5-10) and they will start to be seen. Does London currently have container terminals on the Thames?
Tilbury port is the only major dock now if you class that as London.. The water is too shallow and the Thames barrier built in '84 makes it impractical for container ships or big cruise liners to navigate into central London
Not many tower blocks then
Hello nostalgotekey, did you have a video called Down London river 1959 it has now disappeared, what the heck is youtube up to, I can't believe it.
